Movie Question

As reading a number of threads it seems a majority of people dislike the big mountain sections in ski movies. How can you not like this?

people dont like the big mountain sections because they cant really ski. these sections put them to shame and make them feel stupid for not skiing for real.

and if they say that they dont want to learn how to ski then these people are complete morons and deserve no respect!

'what the fuck you mean is he fuckin dead? the nigga layin there wid all types of fuckin blood comin out his head'

yea ok youre a moron.. i can ski big mtn well i just dont really like watching it as much as park, i think parks just more exciting big mtn is cool as hell the first time but it just starts loosing its effect. And maybe its also because you are talking to people at a newschool site and not a big mtn skiing site like powdermag.com or something, and i think parks are more accesible to people then huge alaskan peaks so people can relate to parks better

I like skiing

you also aren't thinking about all hte poor suckers stuck in the east that have never even been to a mountain - let alone touched powder. back home in ontario, there are no mountains. we get 2 feet of ANUAL snow fall. you can not ski anywhere that isn't on a resort - cuz there is no snow there. everythign is flat, and all there are to ski are terain parks. believe it or not - a HUGE amount of north america is like this. before I moved out here to whistler, I would just fast forward through the big mountain shots because I really didn't understand them... I thought it looked super cool, and would love to do that - but then I look out the window at all the flats, and remember that I don't ever get the chance to do it. so don't be sooo hard on park rats, cuz not everyone lives in the mountains.

I was talking to my X girlfriend last night about skiing out here - and she wwas like - what is a cornise again? a 'straight line' what is that? yea - I am serious. she is a very good skier too - she has just never skied out west. that is how it is.

'What da fack, man? I don undrstand.' Alex the crazy french kid.

I know, I learned to ski in the Poconos (sp?) and Vermont. Now I ski in Wisconsin. We dont have snow, we dont have vertial. All we have is parks. But thats why I love backcountry stuff so much! Its like a special treat for me. I have gone at west about once every year and take advantage of it. I can see how people can like watching park skiing more but What i dont get is all the people who rip on it! For instance, many people say all the TGR movies are crap because they only have a little park skiing and 90% BC. I'm just saying to people give it a try, its partially where newschool skiing evolved from!

jesus, you guys dont need to get all defensive!!! i never said that you were a moron personaly dspin, i know that not everyone has the oppurtunity to ski big mountain. but if you came to mammoth and i saw you in the park while there was 3 feet of fresh on top then I would call you a moron!

i am from wisconsin, i grew up skiing tyrol basin a 300 foot hill that only had bumps and a park, maybe thats why i did enjoy seeing big mountain more, and maybe thats why I appreciate skiing pow more.

i have friends who shall remain nameless that can only ski park and they get paid for it, they get props for that aspect of it, but if you ask me if I have full respect for them as skiers I will say no.

and to say that the things happening on the mountain are not 'newschool' is just plain ludacris, you need to open you're eyes a little more, Fat skis started to become popular the same time that park skiing started to. and it has progressed at the same rate, just because your eyes are not open to that facet of skiing gives you no reason to dismiss it.

also you say that you dont care to see skiing cause its not as exciting.. well the people who are doing both will be the progressors in the near future, thats the only way that skiing will ever compare to snowboarding.

so how about instead of saying bad stuff about mtn skiing, go out and hone your skills, whether its on a race course, in the bumps, or on the mountain. your skiing and jumping will pay off because of it.

peace, dm

wtf when did i say big mtn wasnt exciting??? i said its not AS exciting as newschool to watch on TV. and im not dissin big mtn at all i love it i rather ski big mtn then hit a park too i was just giving you some reasons why its not as popular to watch on tv.and like ductapeboy said i live in ohio i only get to ski big mtn like 10 days a year so im not as interested in it as newschool when i can go to our shitty 300 ft hill and still hit a jump

I like skiing

hey dave - you're not entirely true... there is backcountry skiing in ontario - just only skiable on the very, very good winters... and even than it's still sketchy - i tried doing some lines at blue this year after we got a bit of snow, but by the end of the day my skis were unusable 'cause of all the rocks I hit... it was fun though.

Shit, i've been able to ski steep ass terrain my whole life, which means i am better at that than the park shit. i'd say the most impressive stuff is huge tricks off cliffs like seth morrison does, plus park hits look a lot alike in videos, it's nice to have some epic scenery to look at. don't get my wrong, i love the park sections, but the big mountain sections have to be there to vary it up, although i get kinda bitter seeing 3 foot deep alaska powder that i'll never be able to afford to heli-ski

Didn't want to start a war, just was curious why others dont like it as much! I can see a few valid points.

The big mtn stuff gets boring, I only really watch seths segments over and over. Its not like we dont like to ski big mtn.

Big Mt skiing can be cool, but for me, im kinda amazed by the tricks people are doing in parks. But then again, Scott Gaffney's misty 720 of a cliff was really cool. For me, i guess its a combination of the two, a little of both. But in just movies, all of one can be quite booring and repetitive, hence why i liked High Society.

Then again, im not really that good at either, but from personal experience, both are as fun to do as the other, but tricks look better on video or from a chair.

big mountain segments are very entertaining the first time you see them. they just don't have the same effect as park segments when you are watching them over and over again.
