Mouthguards?

So I got an Under armor one for free, this one to be exact. http://www.underarmour.com/shop/us/en/mens/accessories/protective-gear/pid1223502?iid=125|ArmourBite|v4.0-Endeca-Department-Page---113|dp_hero_01||MWBG|armourbite|P|I|1223502|
My question is how many people use them when you ski and do you think they are necessary? Also I was told by me dentist not to long ago I should definitely wear one if I am doing DH biking due to their help with concussions. So basically what are all your opinions on them?

not necessary, but could help prevent your face/teeth if in a situation where you were to hit your face on your knee, or something.

I wear one.

There's always that chance you'll smack your face and ruin your smile. I'll rock a helmet for safety but i don't go as far as wearing a mouthguard.

they can help your smile but do nothing for concussions. Although people say they do, their is no scientific proof. Even the government says it doesn't prevent concussions. go on a government website and look it up. And don't wear one dh biking. It's fucking summer and your always out of breath and it fogs your gogs.

i think it does prevent concussions because it stop your teeth from slamming together and then the shock of the impact transfers through your jaw and to your brain......but like you said i dont kno if there is any scientific proof of it thats just what i heard...

Nah you're an idiot, having a mouthguard definitely helps prevent concussions because it prevents your teeth from knocking together, saves your mouth from knee-to-face, and prevents you from destroying your mouth if you land on your face. There's a reason most pro mogul skiers, hockey players, and racers have them. And Mike Wilson uses one, so your point is irrelevant.

I keep mine in my pocket when I'm skiing, but I only throw it in if I'm shredding park all day, trying new stuff, or hitting cliffs. Mellow ski days there's no point imo.

Yeah I was only going to wear one if I was hitting large jumps when skiing, definitely not just regular ski days.

I know multiple big mountain skiers that wear mouthguards for various reasons, one being knee to chin impacts when dropping large cliffs. There's a few riders on the Freeride World Tour that actually have mouthguard sponsors.

I don't want an internet fight. but it does prevent knee to face injuries and landing on your face. And also the fucking huge mouthguards do. but you really don't want to wear that skiing. so here the facts I got: http://mtbifacts.com/mouthguardsconcussions.htmland here is both sides of the argument: http://news.medill.northwestern.edu/chicago/news.aspx?id=176875

So it's a matter of choice. In my state VT mouthguards are mandatory for soccer. It's a pain in the ass and we have had the amount of concussions increase every year.Although it could be the level of physical roughness rising.

I've been thinking bout it for a while, but like people said I think I'd just wear it when going hard. Or maybe for urban, it seems like it would be so easy to fuck up your teeth on a sick urban rail.

i dont wear one, but i probably should.

mainly to prevent serious concussions. my friend was one of the best hockey goalies in the province. then a kid on his team, who had a shot equivelent to some nhl players shot at him in warmup when he wasnt looking. it hit him in the jaw and gave him a huge concussion, couldnt leave his house for like 2 weeks. he can still do all the stuff he could, but he's never been the same and he ended up quitting hockey.

the moral of the story is that concussions are caused a lot by slamming your teeth and can happen really easily when you're skiing.

Yeah so from now on I think I'm just going to carry one with me. It's not like it's a big hassle, just throw it in a pocket and if you need it you have it.

After a few nasty chin bumps on the tramp I've thought about getting one, but never gone through with it. Probably will though, i hate when i fucking chomp my cheek or tooth on the springs.

i wish i had one for big mountain shit but i never really had the desire for one in the park
always a good idea to wear one if ur gunna be gettin gnar

WEAR ONE. I was not against mouth guards but i thought they were un necciceary as everyone says. One day I was working on my cork 9's and i kept coming up perpendicular to the landing, did tihs like 4 times. Wear my head hit the knuckle and my skis went straight into the snow. I got a concussion. About 2 weeks later on a powder day, we built a kicker into some powder. we hit it all day, last jump of the day, i did a floated 3, landed and hit my head on my knee and knocked my 4 front teeth out. I will ALWAYS wear a mouth guard skiing from now on

theyre great if your into getting a girl.
i dont know of many chicks who want a guy with chipped and missing teeth everywhere

Good for dropping gnarly big mountain stuff and doing bigger tricks like inverts in park. Everywhere else it just gets annoying. My rule for cliffs and park: If it's bigger than 10ft or upside down then I go for the guard. Plus some special circumstances.

ive been skiing for 13 and have never worn one either, but the point is it will save your teeth.
and you obviously dont take risks big enough to require a mouth guard. cliff drops should require mouth guards the potential for knee to face is so high where i feel ther eis to much to loose which is why i invested in a mouthguard for next season.

I wear one now after I bit my tounge when my pole hit my chin thank god I was already taking vic because it was about a half inch long and almost al the way through

I feel much safer when I wear a mouthguard. I have taken some nasty falls onto my head and face and with a helmet and a mouthguard all I have gotten is a minor bloody nose. I was completely fine from wearing a mouthguard.
