Mountain skiers hating on park skiers.

I grew up doing mountain and back-county but now I only really do park. I noticed that there is a bunch of hate on park skiers because they never ski any real terrain. Why do they care so much though? The whole point of freeskiing is to do what you want.

Lot of park kids act like douche bags in the liftline, etc primarily younger kids. Yet these people are often not good at park skiing and horrendous outside of the park. Just my observation. Obviously there are outliers.

I've been kind of perplexed lately as to why a lot of NS'ers hate on other NS'ers for skiing park or being "park rats".

This site was literally founded so it could be the hub of information for park skiing. Why the hate?

A couple kids in my school poke fun of people like me who ski mostly park. The mountain we go to has a 400ft vertical though and the all they do is go down easy trails, so I don't really understand it. Most of them are cool though, luckily.

Yeah I don't get it either. Ski wherever you want, however you want. Just have fun.

I only make fun of my friends because what else are friends for?

you kids dont even know what a cornice is...! -glenn plake

but seriously any real respectable skier should be able to shred anything, and furthermore respect other style and ability...

"respect gets respect"

davenport called me a flying monkey and left me in the dust and lost on a xc bike ride, ha

There will always be those who look down on others for doing something different. There's the touring folk who look down on the resort skier. Park rats to racers, skiing vs snowboarding, etc.

We'd probably have to look into the connection of this with the instinct of being alpha male. If a 'park rat' gets ladies, but the 'big mountain' guy thinks he is doing the more alpha activity he will be confused, scared, and overcompensate by trying to take the confidence of his competitor away with insults.

Either that, it some people are just jerks.

I actually have came across this. There are these big mountain kids at my school who think they are the shit! They hate on "park rats" for only skiing park. Im good friends with one of them and they seem to be afraid of park jumps so their counter is to say we cant really ski real stuff!

Probably cause they are jealous they can't ski park. Although like many have said above it is because a lot of these kids skiing park are D-bags and don't respect anyone. So don't be a D-bag and respect people so all they can hate you for is because you can ski park and they cannot. Also be able to ski the entire mountain cause one day you'll get old and not be able to ski park like you do now.

if you have no edge control and are 120 lbs and are about 5'5" wearing a XXXXl with some nice gear then yeah hates well deserved.

People definitely need to give way less of a shit and just ride to have fun.

Everyone should know it doesn't matter how you ski, just go out to enjoy the day and have fun.

and fuck around pretty much the whole time.

Personally I fucked up my first post ...

But really I feel like the hate gets recycled and spread all over the mountain. The second someone steps into a park that can't necessarily throw down they get hated on by those who can. Its tough for people who start at an older age to get out there and huck themselves off jumps and slay rails so park rats easily hate on these people for being in there way.

In turn people who prefer to ski big mountain hate when park rats head up to their area of the hill and get in the way. Plus for these people its the only time they can give crap back to the park rats who claim the park as their own and no one elses.

Holy shit, you just explained my life

Personally I have never seen someone hate and make fun of others who can't ski in the park. From my experience the ones that can throw down are the nicest, and the newbz are cocky..

The only time I ever bitch at my friends for being park rats is when it's a pow day and they complain about how they can't ski park because there's too much pow.

You need cooler friends

You should at least be able to carve a ski properly. And post park kids can't do that (at least in Summit County)

You should be able to spell most before you insult my people.

I think it is just different priorities and skill sets. Skiers that only ski park are solely focused on learning tricks and therefore ignore the actual skiing skills that you learn from skiing moguls/racing/backcountry. In the same way mogulers, racers, and big mountain skier have no interest in the technical rail and jumping abilities that Park is focused on. So both groups have their own standards of what makes a good skier and are thus in conflict about what skiing is about. I personally think that being a well-rounded skier is the true measure of a skier. You can be a good park skier and completely suck at actually skiing, but you can also be a big mountain skier and have no ability in the park. I think both of these extremes are not optimal because you leave out some amazing experiences. Park skiing is super fun and progressing trick-wise is a blast, but it doesn't have the sense of adventure and exploration that backcountry skiing does. Plus anyone who says they don't like powder either has never skied deep pow or isn't a good enough skier to ski it. So I agree with what people said above, just do what you like and don't hate on others, but I think better advice is to just do everything. Don't trap yourself in a box of being a park skier or a backcountry skier, you can have so much fun doing everything that it is a shame to limit yourself to one aspect of skiing.

I just think it's funny when people equate having a big bag of tricks with being a good skier, even if the person can barely carve, can't ski bumps, can't ski trees, and doesn't know to ski powder properly.

This thread can't be serious. Park skiers shit on everything at all times. I think that the amount of times that big mountain skiing makes fun of park skiing is very minimal if you look at it realistically.

In Canada, everyone's just really nice to each other. Yeah, we might laugh a little when you screw up or something but don't take it personally. After all, we're all just doing the same sport trying to have fun.

I don't think it's as bad as made out just the arseholes are the only members of the community that stand out for being arseholes and being h8ters

Bummer, I thought this was going to be an awesome thread dedicated to Mountain skiers hating on park skiers. Oh well maybe I'll start one.

Those aren't park kids, those are poser gapers

Mountain skiers hate on snowboarders because theyre notorious for being douchey and disrespectful. Not all, but a good portion are. Park skiing is pretty much the closest thing to snowboarding ao theres the hate

I always find that the skiiers who can do it all end being the best, gnarliest, most immpressive on a whole. Short list for examples

Parker White

Dahrkness

Krazy Karl

John Ware

Delorme

This is why i really dont understand the hate against different disciplines . Just be a boss and get good at it all

Not all kids who ski park are bad at the rest of the hill. In fact, I'd bet most competent park skiers rip outside the park. But when you ski on an ice hill there's not much to do outside the park. It's probably just people who can't ski park being jealous that kids can, and then rip just as hard as they do outside the park.

Same happens in surfing. Old dudes are mad that I can show up on my 5'4", do an air and then do a cutback when they complain I can't do them cause I never learned "fundamentals" or something dumb like that.

Of course there's kids who can't ski properly and they're trying to hit rails while failing at speed control and stuff. But they'd be bad no matter where they're riding, park or the rest of the hill.
