Mountain Biking

Snow is starting to melt and I'm looking to get into mountain biking as a new sport. I havent bought a bike in years and I was wondering if anyone has any advice or model specs they would like to share. I'm looking to spend between $300-$500 on a bike, let me know what you can come up with. Thanks.

300-500 really doesn't buy you much at all. I know when I was first getting into it I had a big sticker shock. What kind of riding are you looking to do. XC trail riding, urban hucking, DownHill? A decent fork (front shock) alone runs at least 300. The closer you can get to the 800-1000 range the better you will be. Bang for you buck trek, giant, specialized and gary fisher (made by trek now) all have good low end bikes. You should demo a bunch of bikes and just see what you like best. AS far as specs go... I love marzocchi and fox forks, stay away from RST and Suntour forks they make better door stoppers then forks. Shimano LX spec line on your derailers, shifter pods, cranks and brakes will be a good entry level start( XT and XTR even better) Dont get all pumped on disc brakes unless they are quality. The only good Mechanical Disc brakes in my opinion or Avids and they are awsome. Hydros disc brakes are a pain for the new guy so stay away. Start calling around to different shops and ask if they have any last years stuff on sale. Make sure you have some money for a nice helmet and gloves. You may also want some baggy bike shorts (they have nut and ass padding) and a jersey to keep you cool in the summer. I love Giro Helmets. I have an Giro E2 and its my favorite so far. I always try to support the Local Bike shop since they are the core of the industry so check with them and give them the option to price match the online and mega store prices. Even if they only come close i'll buy from them and it has paid off in my benefit in the end anyways with free tool use, cheap hook ups on other stuff and sponsorships.

Here are some good sites to check out:

www.mtbr.com - great reviews on everything bike

www.pricepoint.com - cheap bike stuff

www.morcmtb.org - It is a MN bike forum i'm on. Check to see if there is one for your state.

www.pinkbike.com - just good bike porn

www.speedgoat.com - Have insane deals from time to time

There are a lot of mt bikers in here, most of which are huckers. I'm a singletrack trail rider and urban trials rider.

For a starter that wants to have fun, go with these bikes...

-Marin Hawk Hill

Black Diamond

-Fisher Opie

Jumpers

-Gt Chucker 2.0

-Mongoose Fireball

-Marin Novato

Well that's about all you can get for $500 and under. Like skiing, mountain biking is an expensive sport.

trek fuel 100 is the best! i haven't gotten that bike yet, but eventualy i will since my bike is old and need a new one now!..but since ur a beg, fuel 100 will be too much to handle for you..so go around and demo some bikes and find out which one u like..and ^ ur right, 300 to 400 dollars bike are shitty and heavy, not worth it...so just go around..mtbr.com is a great site

for a good cheap all around bike, go with the specialized hard rock models, theyre pretty decent for the price

^Check out the new fuel EX line. they are so tits. I'm planning on buying the Fuel EX 8. I have a fuel 90 frame and i really like it, but it would be nice to have a little more rear travel and still have a good XC performer.

300-400$ wont get u a good new bike man. ive been biking for years (better at that than i am at skiing) and if your getting into the whole dritjump hartail scene which mostly everyone is then u gotta spend at least 800$ for a rig that wont bust on you. go to www.pinbike.com and check out some of the used bikes that ppl are trying to sell. there are some wicked deals man.

if you wana get a full suspension, then thats more expensive. for someone who has been riding as long as i have though, i wouldnt get a full suspension unless your going to be doing mostly downhill. a straight up urban rig can take all the hits anyway. when looking for a bike definatly look for beefyness in the frame. if it looks tough then it probably is tough. norco, orange, brodie, kona, specialized, balfa and oryx make some pretty sweet stock bikes that u can customize later. so ya any other questions or stuff about parts and stuff just email me. have fun riding.

biking is so ridiculously expensive.good incentive to really commit and get your $$$ out of it when you do go for broke tho.

fuck dude thats a tight budget. look at www.pinkbike.com under hard tails in the buy sell section. they might have something for that little

You guys are weeeeeaaaak. Get a session 77, I got one, and they are sick. Im Cameron McCaul, so you cant have one, but i can.

If i ride with you this summer are you gonna kick my ass ?

Just dip your dong in paint and smack your helmet with it.

Skim ebay, check the hardtails with Dirt Jumper 3 front fork...usually u cant go wrong with kona, but that could be pushing the price limit, but ebay is key.

ive been looking for a bike for a long while now

seriously kiddo, sell yourself on the street or something and make another few hundred cause you're gonna need shin pads and a good helmut too- which will set you back another $150cdn at least.

I got an $1800 setup for $1500- worth every cent.
