Point me in the direction of some places to read about stuff, and maybe get cheap stuff. I'll build one or buy one, but it needs to be cheap. I'll get parts of craigslist or garage sales or whatever. Just gotta figure out how stuff works and whats good and all.

Go to pinkbike, the newschoolers of mountain biking. They know all and I can help you with more specific stuff

Whatever you want to ride, your first real bike should be a hardtail. Hopping on a fully will teach you nothing and you will ride like a complete hack.

yeah i wasn't going to get a full suspension. I guess it's nice, and so are hydraulic brakes, but I don't need it.

I'm not a biking n00b, i've done it before. And i'd assume like the the rest of NS, i'm coordinated and can pick up 'action' sports pretty fast. I just don't have my own real mountain bike, either just used whatever bike i could find or a rental on school trips. they rent really nice bikes too.

I mean, i'd be pretty fine with just using a BMX bike while riding through trails and stuff. There's not 'real' mountains in delaware and in the woods around my house in NJ which are where i'd be doing my riding. I biked a few times at school and it's a lot of fun and whatnot, but i don't need to be the guys I saw on the trail with $2000 bikes and spandex. It's a bike, I just want some front suspension and gears with other parts that aren't total shit.

I went to my local bike shop and picked up a pretty decent used hard tail for 650 and it's been great for local trails. Now that I'm hooked I'm starting to droll over the $5000+ bikes.

Skiing and mountain biking can be two of the most expensive sports of you invest in nice stuff.

It blows

Mechanical disc brakes would be fine though, especially if hes not super serious about it. plus they are low maintenance and cheap. Im with ya on rim brakes though

Yeah you're right.

And to the OP...bicycles need to be maintained. Buying a bike is only half the battle, parts break all the time. It really is a pain in the ass. The cheaper the parts you buy the faster they are going to break.

Plus get ready for the addiction. You start out cheap and always want bigger and better. Biking is a love hate relationship.

pinkbike.com in the buy/sell section is a great place to start looking for a bike.

Haha please don't take a BMX bike trail riding, for the sake of the name of mountain biking, but most importantly for your knees and body. Taking a dirt jumper trail riding is bad enough.

Do not do this for the sake of Mtn biking, If you want to do it for your body fine, personally I think a dirt jump bike is a great first mountain bike, indestructible and fun to do any kind of riding. If you get a long enough seat post you can trail ride just fine, I have ridden 12 mile cyclocross races on my specialized P2 dirt jumper with the stock seat-post.
