i really want to get into downhill and mountain biking but i know absolutely nothing about it. I've looked at some bikes but they are all a shit ton of money... how much is a decent bike going to cost me? what should i look for? just general purchasing info would be nice. no hate please

Start out on a over built hard tail and ride the shit out of it till your really good. Then, if your still into biking in a few seasons and feel like its holding you back get a full suspension

this. starting on a hardtail builds much better riding skills and technique. not as forgiving as a full suspension

if your looking for a decent bike at a decent price i would say around 2,500 but at even that price you will have to replace something at the end of the year. go to your local downhill bike hill and ask if they sell the rentals at the end of the year you can sometimes get a 5,000$ bike for a fraction of the cost and those bikes are always maintained and if anything is broken they will replace the broken parts.

im just posting to reaffirm that you should start with a durable hardtail frame. something with more dj geometry, just dont get a cromo frame and expect it to be as burly as a dh bike. hardtail will be less forgiving, but will help you immeasurably with the basic skills like choosing a line, airing, bunny hopping etc... you could prob get into a good hardtail for less than a grand if you cruise the pinkbike buy/sell, and just replace/ get new components as you wear em down. after one or two seasons of hardtail shred it will probably be worth it to upgrade to a full sus dh bike.

if you are going to do downhill, freeride and xc spesh enduro is sick! thats what im planning on getting its 2400 ish, for the 2012 model, but next years is 3000+

As previously mentioned get a good hard tail!

If you start with a top line full suspension you will not value what it does for you and MOST importantly you will not have developed as great bike skills.

Getting into biking can be daunting because of the prices, so I would say buy a relatively cheap one for starters and see what you think. --- If you take care of the bike it will last a long time.

But yeah, once you've got basics down downhilling is awesome.

thisonce, you have good handling skills it will make riding downhill much easier, and a lot more fun, and is not a huge investment.

You can get a decent new hard tail bike for $700-$1000

i bought a hardtail cause it was all i could afford and loved it for a month or so. then I knew I wanted something more and got a used xc full suspension for a good price and loved it. then I bought a better used xc+ish full suspension for a better price 2 years later and 2 years after that I still love it.

still wish I had my hardtail though! full suspension makes much less of rocks, but even with it you still want to do the lines that you'd be forced to ride if you had a hardtail cause they're usually the fasted and easiest.

and even with a nice shock, railing over rocks is never great for your bike--hello untrue rim+.

Another point: unless you plan on riding chairlifts/shuttling all the time, you're gonna want something that can pedal uphill. downhill bikes truly are useless unless you plan on walking/driving, imo. plus, it's very rare that you'll need anything more than 160mm travel unless you plan on taking on aaron gwin for the worldcup.

And for that matter, unless you're huge, 160mm is more than enough travel unless you're dropping 10 foot drops, which 90% of bikers aren't doing, or you can't hit the right line through the rocks, in which case you should revert to a hardtail in the first place!

Don't bite off more than you can chew, unless money is no option, then fuck it and get whatever you want.

I need help here. No point in creating a new thread, but how good of a deal is a 2001 Norco VPS Shore for $420? I have wanted to get into downhill biking for a while, but never got around to it, partly because of the cost. This seems like a pretty good deal to me, though this bike is from 2001.

Don't buy brand new bikes, they depreciate like cars. You can buy brand new bikes, but first try out a ton and learn what you like. If you have any areas/stores that demo DH bikes call them and ask if they will be selling them at the end of the season. Since they are demo bikes from a shop chances are they will be maintained a little better than the average joe.

I'm going to say this once more for emphasis, don't buy brand new until you have a good grasp of knowledge on bikes, you will be wasting your money.
