if a volcano blew up...and sent up ash into the atmosphere- then wouldn't it sway the weather pattern somehow?

^ not enough to affect very many ski resorts. and it would have to be a huge explosion like in the 80's which is highly doubtful. calskierx that's hilarious. I also heard that there was ash from st helens found in africa. it got up in the wind stream and traveled. and apparently amelia aerhart is still alive and the titanic didn't sink from an ice burg. random facts

OK LETS GET THIS STRAIGHT PEOPLE this is NOT a big deal even if DOES arupt it WILL NOT be a big eruption and second of all it WILL NOT being a natural hazard instead it will be a natural hazard in which NO ONE Will be killed cuz the area will already hav been evacuated!

mark my words, not a damn thing of importance will happen to st helens in our life time. I think it got this eruption shit outta its system bout 20 years back which is less than a blink of an eye in geological time so don't worry

Probably the craziest volcanic eruption that I've ever heard of was Mount Krakatoa found on the island of Rakata in Indonesia. An eruption in 535 sent enough ash into the atmosphere that it reduced the amount of sunlight that got through, dropping the temperature by several degrees celcius. Also, the Bubonic Plague was suspected to be directly related to the eruption of Krakatoa.

More recently, in 1883, there was an eruption that destroyed two thirds or Rakata, dramatically darkened the sky for days afterward (for anyone that has seen the painting 'the scream,' the red of that sky was said to ressemble the colour of the sky in Norway after Krakatoa), it sent concussive air waves around the world seven times. The blast was so loud, that people heard it in Austrailia(2200 miles away).

The eruption created a new volcanic island, and its growing at a rate of 5 inches per day, pretty quick for an island eh?

^but think about that mt. rainier is what? 100,000 years over due? which I guess isn't very much in geological times. so it could keep holding off for a realy long time. The geological ppl know when to evacuate everyone and they can usually tell if it's gonna go within about a week or less. you should all go watch dante's peak. There is actual footage of st. helens in there. they used it as their volcano erupting.

did that make any sense?

they've been saying mammoth is overdue and an eruption can occur at anytime, but i think its doubtfull with the research ive done so far, im saying within the next 300 years or less.

 
here is some more info. It is currently on a alert level 2. The alert levels go 1, 2, 3. 3 beinging the highest. heres what a level 2 alert is

Volcano Advisory - Alert Level TWO

This alert level is declared by USGS-CVO when monitoring and evaluation indicate that processes are underway that have significant likelihood of culminating in hazardous volcanic activity but when the evidence does not indicate that a life- or property-threatening event is imminent. This alert level is used to emphasize heightened concern about potential hazard. Among the possible outcomes are: (1) precursory activity wanes, leading either to cancellation of the 'volcano advisory' or to a downgrade of alert level to 'notice of volcanic unrest;' (2) conditions evolve so as to indicate that a life-threatening volcanic or hydrologic event is imminent or underway, leading to issuance of a 'volcano alert.' 'Volcano advisory' statements, supplemented as appropriate by 'updated volcano advisory' statements will clarify as fully as possible USGS-CVO understanding of the hazard implications.

surf the usgs sit as they have the best info. Newspapers are not as accurate.

i dont want to sound like a nut case but i thnk something huge is coming, before you judge listen to my facts..onyl a few days ago a 6.00 earthquake hit here in Ca, now on the same fault line(i think< at least the smae plateline ) a volcano is takin a shit.a few weeks ago there was a small quake in LA.there is a lot of shit happenin SF is way over due for another big one as well as LA. I hope i am wrong but it think shit is gonna hit the fan sometime soon.

Calskier, I got a funny feeling ur right, some more evidence to add is the swarms north of mamoth, they had ~4 5.4M earthquakes and about 30 others over 3.0M, seems that plate is more active than usual. But as far as st helens goes thats not part of the san andreas plate system as far as i can remember, I'll have too look it up again

yesterday (october 1) mt st helins had a prity minor eruption it sent ash and steam to about 10,000 feet most of it landed in the surounding areas, all of the usgs intstuments on the mt were taken out by the erupition today they are puting new ones up there and they belive that the mt its repusuerizing for more eruptions

what if it sent a cloud of ash over the counrty and covered the sun, and it snowed, yay. i think that happened about 100 years ago. sum big amount of ash and i heard vt. got snow every month that year
