Mount St. Helens

Wow, I was just reading a news report on cnn.com about the increased tectonic activity under the crator. There is the possibility of a small to moderate eruption in the near future.

right now if it blows it all goes to oregon. i think itd be cool to see it erupted

seattle is fucked, sometime in the near future. mt. rainier is overdue by about 100,000 years. i'm sure they'll deal with the situation and not much will happen, but that's a big assed volcano.

hood is a volcano too.

***********************************

Its winter, the birds have all flown south, all but one. One little bird that waited too long. As it flew to catch it's buddies it got icicles on its wings and fell to the ground. The bird then saw a nice looking branch at the top of a nearby tree and it said to a nearby cow, 'I want to reach that top branch but I don’t have then energy to fly up, can you help?' The cow said, 'Here, eat some of my poop it'll fuel you to climb up the tree.' The little bird said, 'Thanks!' and had some of the cow poop. The bird flew up to the first branch of the tree and rested, then the next day flew to the next branch, until finally the bird reached the top branch. Then the farmer came out with a shotgun...

The moral of the story is, bullshit may get you to the top, but it wont keep you there.

yeah. I've been there like 5 times. It's pretty cool, but I'd rather ski rainier. And the eruption they said is going to be like magma and not ash like last time, but that would be cool if mt rainier did what st helens did. all the ash

did that make any sense?

First of all, the entire cascade mountain range is volcanic in nature, because of the convergent plate margin just off the coast. Secondly,t here is little to no possibility of a Mt. St. Helens eruption, because the tectonic activity is not volcanic. It's been raining a lot near there, and ground water has accumulated. This water has seeped down, come into contact with magma or heated regions, become superheated, risen up, and cracked some of the rock above it. Thus tectonic activity. No eruption risk. Case closed.

you guys are all silly!

mt. st. helens is summited all the time and many people opt to ski down.

haven't had an eruption in a long time? hmm...twenty four years...ok, lets think how long the earth has been around and then put thirty years into that perspective...

toxic ash? last time st. helens blew it dumped ash all over washington and then some, i don't remember anything toxic about it...inhalation is a whole different story.

i was watchin a show on discovery about volcanoes and it said rainer is the most dangerous volcano in the world becuase its so close to a major city and if it erupts its suppose to be 10 times as strong as st helens was.

AT first I heard Helen's had almost no chance of erupting but current news reports say it's likely, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see if Mother Nature will put on a show.

yeah when hood goes ill cry. But rainier is wahts scary. Its over due by like 100,000 years i heard. I don't know where they got that data but the news said it. When it goes itll be bad. THe south sister made the news for awhilwe but now nothing is really happening about it. I hope that goes in my lifetime casue itd be cool. My dads car had like 6 inche soff ash on it when he was in college during the original eruption. He has tight pictures.

PLEASE research or ask before making such assumptions like this one.

the ash is a pain in the ass. However, the lahars are what are scary. Lahars are basically mudflows and if you have seen or read much on Mt Rainer, It has a huge ass glacier on it. If that would melt due to volcanic activity goodbye tacoma and some of seatle. If you dont believe me, take a look at prior lahars that occured. Some maid it all the way into the puget sound. In the past, almost all activity went north and west. you could not pay me enough to buy a home near Tacoma.

haha, first time JDMay is definatley wrong. Seattle times reporting 70% chance of some sort of eruption soon meaning anyhtign from days to months..

Wow, JD is a geologist with the US geological survey as well... I've been keeping track of the quake activity as well as the opinions of the goelogists at washington state, and the USGS. They all seem to agree that the magnitude and the depth of the quakes as well as the longevity of this string of quakes marks a high probablility of an eruption. If you look at the timeline on the volcanic activity in the cascades St. Helens is the most active recently, as well as historically. According to various goeologist that know the makeup of the area and the history of the region they've made an educated assumption that it would be likely that an eruption will take place. Granted that it's the norm for water seepage to spur vulcan activity under the mountain that theory has basically been ruled out due to growth that has been detected in the lava dome. Just take a look here: USGS, Cascades Volcano Observatory For a wealth of knowledge...

^And you believe everything you read in the papers, do you? I don't usually know much about this, but I happened to have a conversation with a couple of EOSC (Earth and Ocean Sciences) and Geology profs at my university about it before EOSC class (Stupid science requirements) and what I posted up there is exactly what they told me. So I'd take the Seattle times with a grain of salt.

^ i agree. but it would be so huge if it did. The resort up there is so nice, I would be sad. paradise inn is really nice and there's a lot of fun hiking. it's such a beautiful mountain

did that make any sense?

Im majoring in geology too, its debatable weather or not the eruption will happen, i doubt it will and if it does then it won't be that bad. Whats wierd is that the swarms of earthquakes outside of Mammoth incresed dramatically the last time st helens blew. Strange coincidence huh? Mammoth is overdue as well and in the 80's they evacutated and nothing happened. but that whole caldera around mammoth was one of the worlds biggest eruptions ever. It sent ash layers all the way into kansas and discharged ~637,000 km^3 of debris, ash, rock, magama, etc.. and 100,000 years isn't that overdue if you look at it in geologic time. thats less than a day in geo time

i saww the before and after of st helens, that was crazy dude, it seriously blew its load

I've actually climbed up mt. st. helens. It's a good hike, and even in July, there was enough snow to ski down about 4,000 feet, and maybe more. I didn't ski down it, becuase I was only 10 years old, and I hadn't even started skiing yet. You could defineatly ski down it. It might be hard to get a hiking permit to go up there though.

I doubt rain has much to do with the earthquakes. Do you think that in 20+ there hasn't been more/as much rain in that area that would 'make' the earthquakes. I haven't heard anything about previous actvity after the eruption, except building of the lava dome.

The lava dome is probobly building up, it;s onlt 600 feet tall, and tese volcanoes are composite, or stratovolanoes, where they build tehm selves up with lava and/or ash and then blow themselves up, then build up again.

They also said mt. baker was going to erupt in the 70's, but nothing happened. You really can't predict much about these volcanoes.

I don't know if you'd remember, but did you go to a place called Windy Ridge? Anyways it is so windy up there that it feels like you are going to blow away. It's overlooking spirit lake. It is a awesome place to hike. Both of those mountains are incredibly beautiful. But you have to find the good parts of st helens, otherwise it's all just dead trees.

did that make any sense?

^ werd is was gonna say dat too. Im just guessin st helens is going back to rebuilding its self... just small-med erutions gettin bigger and bigger utill it looks perfect again in a bizillon yrs but thats the cascade range build up then boom its just a constant process... MT. Mazama (crater lake) was pretty big i guess.

yeah, the south side of mt./ st. helens in really nice. Yall should go to the lava cast forest there...really cool stuff. Mt. Mazama was about the height of Hood, maybe 1,000 feet higher. Crater lake is huge though, and prob. the most beatiful lake I have ever seen in my life.

dude, i am worried about yellowstone, its like 90 miles from where I live. And ever worse, it's right next to big sky. But yeah, that whole park is just one giant crator. And it is way overdue for a massive explosion. Scientists have drilled down and gotten samples here in bozeman from the last time yellowstone blew, and they found what would have been over 8 feet of ash and debris.

Hung

Are you guys serious? If it blows ash like it did in the 80's our ski season is done for. Imagine the volcanic acidity just eating at your bases, plus the mountains would close cuse they wouldnt be able to maintain all the lifts. ya that would be real cool

pray for snow

ok mr skiforhead whose icon is 4frnt. if it blows, then its not going to be a large one like before. That general area might get ash, but guess what, i think that the snow will adequatly cover the fucking ash. What do you think, that one blast will close all ski hills in North America?

Well, it goes like this. It was the middle of the day, it was very hot out, and I had to piss. So i did.
