Mount point for Black Crows Nocta

I'm just getting around to thinking about mounting up the Noctas-part of my 19/20 hype. I won't be breaking them out until there's a good base built up and hopefully a bit of fresh.

I need to measure and do a mock up still but I'm thinking +2cm from recommended? Recommended line is just over -6cm from center I believe. I did reach out to the great customer service team at Black Crows...they said Flo Bastian and most of the other athletes mount on the line.

I have the 185cm length which is on the bigger side for me. Straight tape pull is 183.

Anyone have experience mounting these forward of the line?

For reference my other skis are 4FRNT Kye 110 which are mounted at ~-3.5cm from center, + 2.5 from recommended.

Any input is appreciated.

Don't really know much about Black Crows or their skis but as a ski designer, we're pretty stubborn on function & balance and push "at recommended" as that is really where all the elements of the ski are designed to work best for the largest number of customers. That is why you see a lot of customer service people push "on the line" - as that is the best spot for the most number of people. Also, the number one questions ski companies get is where should I mount - and it is the bane of all ski designers lives because we've already stated where we think you should mount - and built the entire ski platform around that point.

That said, on most skis (basically anything not featuring any reverse sidecut), +/-2cm from recommended is generally a relatively safe zone to be in if it better fits your preference or body type. Outside of +2....you really risk ended up doing weird things to the binding platform, center of sidecut, rocker balance, etc - and while a ton of you do it (center mounted Jeffreys are literally the reason I drink)...I don't recommend it.

So if you are used to something a bit further forward than the -6cm mount on the Nocta, I wouldn't worry about moving that up to -4cm or so. That said, I wouldn't move further forward, as it can start to negatively alter performance.

Hope that helps.

It definitely helps! It's always great to have input from people who actually design and build skis.

Nocta is 122mm reverse camber, a little bit of taper and on the lighter side, at about 2050g each in a 185. One was 2070 and the other 2040ish if I recall correctly.

I'm a fairly upright/ neutral stance skier without a particularly powerful body type, 5'7" 140lb. Idon't really drive my tips very much, more pivot, slash.

With all that in mind, given both your light weight and preference to ski a bit more balanced, I'd go +2cm.

So one thing to keep in mind - as you start going forward off the binding platform, you can end up with a stiff spot behind your heel as you end up with excess binding platform behind the mount (this is especially true with a binding with a short rear mounting pattern, like the Pivot). So for a skier that stands more vertical in their stance, that stiffness can actually push you into the backseat.

Anyway, given your height/weight and the ski size, I wouldn't stress about going a bit forward.

Hope you like em.

I'm currently skiing the animas and I mounted mine +2cm (-4cm from centre) and they rock. Absolutely killer ski.

You'll have no regrets putting them +2cm.

I've met the head ski designer Julien Regnier before and asked him the same thing. He doesnt recommend going anywhere further than +2. He also told me the athletes that are more freestyle oriented (Flo Bastien, Nikolai Schirmer) mount at +2

Perfect, thanks for the input. I'm finally getting around to printing templates to mount these things up. Planning on +2cm from recommended, I played around with mock ups and think it looks good.

Yup! I had a pair of 185s with rental bindings, and I moved them around a lot to see what was best. I ended up at +2 from recommended which was my favorite place to have the bindings, but they ski really well at -6 too
