Motorcycle junior year of high school

I am turning 17 in a couple months and in my junior year, my parents have only been dismissing this idea. I love speed and adrenaline and know a sport bike is perfect for me. Does anyone have any recommendations to what I could tell my parents to get them in favor of me buying my own motorcycle in high school?

Your insurance is gonna be insane at 17 on a sportbike. It's gonna be a hard sell to your parents unless you're paying your own way, and even then.

I have 15 grand saved up from working all year,

Just be careful man, 2 of my friends have crippled themselves for life crashing their sport bikes in the past year

I wouldn’t mind dying on a motorcycle I am not too worried about that part

Have you ridden a motorcycle before? Unless you grew up riding dirt bikes and you’re comfortable ripping around on a 450, you do NOT need a sport bike. And I imagine that if you did your parents would be much more comfortable with the idea of letting you get one.

So I’m going to assume you have minimal or no experience with motorcycles. You need to take a motorcycle safety class first of foremost. That will give you a better understanding of the power you are dealing with in a controlled setting and give your parents peace of mind letting you ride one. As for the bike you should probably stay under 500cc, I’d recommend a ninja 400. Save the fast stuff for later when you know what your doing. Most girls won’t know the difference anyway.

if you get a sport bike as your first bike, the best case scenario is that you will lay it down and get some road rash. You’ll then be so scared to ride it that you’ll sell it… the worst case is you fucking die. Fast bikes demand respect.

So ninja 400 as first bike is alright?

Yes that’s a good starting point. Plenty of power to have fun and learn the basics. Also don’t cheap out on your helmet. Buy a newer used bike if you can because you WILL drop it.

Have you ridden before? Go take an msf class and get a motorcycle endorsement on your license first. You'll learn a lot and there's places that have donor bikes. Maybe that'll show your parents that you have a vested interest in not turning into street pizza.

Or just wait till you're 18 and do what you want and cop a ninja 650 or sv650 for a first bike, you'll outgrow a 400 right away.

He’s 17 and talking about “how he wouldn’t mind dying on a motorcycle” lol. I think a 400 is probably a better choice.

I think you should just stop with your Landy love buddy.

nah they‘re actually some of the coolest cars i’ve been in, checking some out in person has only made me like them more tbh. I’d still agree most are over engineered pos. But their landy‘s ?

A 650 isn't necessarily blistering fast, less power than a 600 super sport. Both will absolutely kill you but a 650 can at least get out of it's own way on the highway.

Bikes are dumb af but they're also super fun so I can't blame the kid.

Just remember, its not a matter of IF you get hit riding it... Its just a matter of WHEN.

You know what chicks think is really hot? Dudes who can't move from the neck down.

Only Landy worth more than hot garbage is a Land Cruiser

Hope you're ready to get smoked by a soccer mom in a Tahoe. Dirt bikes and shit are dope, and I'll get a streetbike if I ever end up in the sticks, but there's no way in hell I'd ever ride in an urban area. People are too damn retarded.

Yeah neither one is particularly fast. The 400 isn’t the slouch that you think it is though. The design philosophies were different between it and the 650. The 650 is intended to be more of a sport touring bike for intermediate riders. The 400 is intended to be someone’s first “sport bike”. It only weighs 360lbs, has a lower seat height, has more aggressive ergonomics that are still approachable for a beginner, and makes most of its power at higher rpms. Definitely not your grandads dr400 that will only do 80 going down hill. Idk there’s pros and cons to both. If the kid doesn’t weigh that much I don’t think it’s fair to say he would immediately outgrow it though.

I am 5’6 at 135 pounds, I would either get the ninja 400 or ninja 650

Im all for it OP! Some good advice has already been stated. Take a course if you are not familiar, take a course if you are familiar with motorcycles. The 400 is a good choice, the 600 is a good choice. It all depends on what you want and what you can handle. Maybe go test ride one and show the parents you can manage it and they will be more comfortable on getting onboard. Good luck OP.

OP I seriously reccomend the ruckus. good on gas. fucking fun, and its only 49cc so you can mod it to rip like hell without expensive motorcycle classes and license

your parents will love it

I bought an R6 when I was 16, told my mom I was getting a motorbike, she thought I was buying another dirtbike. She cried when I got home with it but eventually got over it. That being said after having various crotch rockets for the better part of 10 years I don't really think they should be available for the general public especially 1000's. But it sounds like you are considering something very responsible. Go for it and explain your responsible decision.

Also, insurance was insanely cheap, like $40 a month. I used to take the insurance off my truck in the summers and only ride my bike to save cash.

yeah dad was fine, but he never gave a shit about much anyways. I think they have software limiter settings now on faster bikes.

At least get a small bike first, A 600+ is way too much bike for a 17 year old. When I was in high school I bought an rc390 and rented a storage unit down the road to hide it from my parents. In the mornings Id walk down and ride it to school or wherever. Looking back I'm glad I got the experience before getting a bigger bike, they can get you in all kinds of serious trouble. Last lecture: Please get some solid gear. Armored hoodies/jackets & jeans, boots, gloves and a decent (Shoei) helmet.

rc390 and duke 390 are good beginner routes, but honestly even an sv650 would be good or possibly an mt-07 if you have decent throttle control because those bad boys are wheelie machines if you rip em

Imma stick with the 650 tho, cause its really not as powerful as 600cc super sports like the r6 and others. I have been doing a bit of research everyone is writing about how it is one of the best beginner bikes. It has abs 2

Yeah either ninja 650 or mt-07, it will probably be more comfortable

You should also look at the r7 if you’re dead set on getting a bike in that class. It has the same engine as the mt 07.

I really think it’s going to be a bad call for you to start out on a bigger bike man. I know going really fast in a straight line sounds fun but there is so much more to it than that. There are going to be times when you need to get turned around or maneuver through tight spots at low speed, there will be times when you get knocked off balance and whiskey throttle into a wheelie or you do a tank slapper (you should google what that is. It is terrifying). There’s just so much more to it than you’re thinking about. I’m not trying to talk down to you but you’re not a big guy. There’s a reason kids will start dirt biking on 50s while an adult will start dirt biking on a 250 at minimum. “Beginner” is a relative term.

Imma take a training course, then keep it to track for a couple months on either the mt 07, z650, ninja 650 or r7. I am really gonna take my time and practice a lot at the track before I go on the actual road.

Would starting with a hyper naked be a smarter idea? It might be more comfortable which is a bit needed.

If you want to go fast as fuck and and ride track then get a sport bike. If you want something that will be more fun to bop around town and do wheelies on then get a naked bike. A naked bike will have a more upright seating position and straighter handlebars so it will be more comfortable.

good call on taking it to the track for a few months first? Post a picture when you get your bike.
