I'm a university student and in one of my courses (Philosophy or War) we're currently learning about the design of modern weapons and the things people come up with are messed;

Modern hand grenades are designed the damage tissue as much as possible without killing, the tungsten hook like fragments aren't designed to kill, they're designed to lodge in soft tissue which on it's own requires surgical removal. However to "spice" things up they are coated in phosphorus which burns the wound internally, which requires another specialized surgeon to remove them without causing massive tissue damage. The point of which is to drain the enemy economy. Whats the most messed up thing you've learned lately?
 
The world has been in an incredible state of disease every since we left the forest and began the march into history. There have always been disgustingly gruesome acts of brutality and hatred from one man to another. History is a process we must go through to become civilized, but it comes at the price of our incredible mental and physical discomfort as we pass through the stage. As more and more people are being born, resources are becoming more scarce, and people's discomfort amplifies the world throws itself into faster and faster rates of chaos. For example, imagine the horrible acts that we have witnessed over the past 20 years. Shootings, mass murders, greed, wars, all seem to be rearing their ugly heads more often. And its all happening faster and faster. More history has been packed into the last 100 years than has occurred in the past thousand years. In a sense, the historical process is speeding up thus increasing the discomfort we all experiencing. History is an alchemical process and by the speed at which it is occurring as of now, I think we can't really pack much more in before we either make an extraordinary leap in evolution, an amazing jump in technology, or ruin the planet for all future beings. This is it. This is what all the prophets, shamans, and religious clergy saw coming. The apocalypse. I'm not using that word in a bad sense either. But this time we are in right now is a critical period. We've got one shot to learn to love another and make peace with the planet and each other or force destruction upon the planet and its inhabitants. Love one another, be mindful, focus on clear communication, forget the ego, rempower your own experience, stop consuming the stupid cultural being pumped out magazines and tv, and creat for a better future for your children.

That is probably not related at all to what you were going for but the idea of cruel acts got me thinking about how history has pretty much been a non-stop crime of person and against person. I truly believe that every intelligent species that has existed has to go through a similar process to learn how to become worthy, decent, and respectful of themselves and the worlds in which they live.

 
That one bag of chips =/= one jar of salsa. WHAT THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH ALL THAT LEFTOVER SALSA! STOP FUCKING JIPPING ME TOSTITOS!
 
yeah it's pretty fucked up..it's not even a 2:1 ratio either. You have a few people over to watch a football game so you get two bags of chips and one thing of salsa then you have a shit ton of left over chips...what the hell am I supposed to do with dry ass tostitos? you expect me to eat that garbage without any topping? Then you inevitably go out and buy another jar of salsa to finish the bag only to end up with 3/4 of the salsa left over..it's a pretty messed up situation we have to deal with nowadays
 
probably the single most messed up thing i know about the world is that a lot of us spend our entire lives voluntarily doing things we don't want to do. most people live (and arguable, waste) their entire lives not truly experiencing and chasing a passion of theirs even though they could.

also another thing that i find messed up is the percentage of marriages that end in divorce today compared to the same percentage from 50 years ago.
 
its fucked that the bottle of salsa doesn't match a a bag of chips. but if you're buying 2 bags there are other options... queso dip or guacamole, or insanely spicy salsa
 
That is true..

I find myself often laying down a layer of tostitos in a plate, sprinkling them with cheese, Nuke em for 30 seconds, the toss some salsa on top. Doing it this way seems to give it a better Bag of chips to salsa jar ratio. However, you have to be careful about not getting greedy and dousing the chips with salsa. Then you're right back in the predicament.
 
Yeah, that's cause people are stupid though. They let other people tell them how to live their lives entirely. I don't know if you'd call it stupidity or social conditioning, but from day one in this country: go to kindergarten, go to middle school, go to highschool, get good grades, go to college, go to graduate school, go get a job, get this kind of car, watch this tv show, do this because everyone else is doing it. And we forget to listen to ourselves and what WE want to do. That's what I mean by define your own experience. I think the life well lived is a life that empowers your own experience. Don't listen to what the culture tells you to do. Do what you want to do. Culture is stupid. Jersey Shore is proof. People actually watch that shit for entertainment? Go on a hike, get fucking baked, play with your dog, hang out with your parents, play the guitar, rempower your life instead of zombying out to some shit someone invented to keep you dull and entertained.

There are so many shows on TV that blow. my. mind. - because they are actually shows. People actually tune it. They partake in the sadness. I hate reality TV.

(except for the original Road Rules & Real World, of course haha)
 
Yes you definitely increase your options when you grab 2 bags of chips...but isn't your ratio still off? Instead of 1 salsa jar you now have a salsa jar and a queso dip jar which is WAY too much dip for the amount of chips available

Which leaves you with the possibility of purchasing those 1 ounce salsa-to-go containers that are out now..but you can't just buy one because they only sell them in packs of 6 - but does that really solve anything?

There must be some collusion between chip manufacturers and salsa makers because they place you in this endless cycle of purchasing chips/salsa..you can never find a happy medium where you have the exact amount of chips to salsa...I feel like I shouldn't have to reiterate this, but it's a fucked up situation and is something that needs to be addressed by the population as a whole

 
Yes, but let me ask you, what future? At this point, its hard to predict whats coming. I think the conventional life we have all found ourselves embedded within is going to morph into something unrecognizable. How do we even know where the state of the world is going to be in 10 years. Its going to get crazy, major changes are around the bend
 
that surprises you? it's not the first time a war has been fought over opium.. the brits and chinese went though it, too. it's a multi-billion dollar industry, so to think our government doesn't toil around in it is naive.

people watch here comes honey boo boo because its hilariously stupid, not because its actually good. I watch it occasionally because mindless mind-numbing tv is relaxing after studying for 10 hours straight.

I mean, yea the fact that it's even a show is pretty ridiculous. but hey, it's there.

BUT, the most messed up thing I've learned recently is that Santa's reindeer fly because historically in Siberia the hallucinogenic mushroom, "Amanita muscaria" to reindeer and would drink the reindeer's pee to get the effects of the mushroom.

Santa is also displayed on or near amanita muscaria mushrooms in holiday christmas ornaments and decorations because of this:

Santa Clause is bright red and has white a white beard because he's actually based off of the mushroom itself. The North Pole = Siberia. Shrooms = flying reindeer.

Its not that messed up, but eye opening.

Diamonds are surprisingly common here on earth. The single reason they're so rare and expensive is because of a complete monopoly by De Beers, a diamond company who singlehandedly controls the price of diamonds.

So basically the diamond is the ultimate hyped up product

what does questioning a graph that looks like it was drawn by a 5 year old without any sources have to do with being an idiot? I never disputed the point you were making...just that you did a terrible job at getting your point across by posting that

and yes that second graph is much better - it isn't biased it is purely factual, its well put together, it has a source listed and I can tell you got it from the BBC. The fact that you need to ask me if the second graph is better, as if somehow the first and second graph are even close to the same thing, makes me believe you are retarded

I reread what i wrote and i mis-typed. What you said was what i was going for. I always have 1/4 of the bag of chips left by the time I finish the salsa.

the part that makes you an idiot is the "source blah blah" about a ns post like it's a fucking book report. you want a source, go to google and determine for yourself whether or not it's accurate. i really don't care.

the first graph did a great job of illustrating afghanistan's history of political unrest and the related levels of opium production....which was the point of the post. not really sure how you can call it biased?

the second only shows opium production, so it's not quite as effective in showing the correlation between the drug trade and war. youdumb.

 
Thank Ullr! I assumed you were one of those people who merely wet their chip with salsa, like that salsa water on their chip is somehow any good. The way a man dips his chip usually speaks volumes of his character.
 
Just the mass amounts of poverty in the world and governments who couldn't give 2 shits about their people. It's the 21st century and we still have mass amounts of poverty on a global scale. Just everyone here on newschoolers are the 1% if you take into account the world population.
 
The fact that the early settlers of America killed off almost an entire race of people, and yet we constantly assume moral high ground over so many other nations.
 
But doood we totally had ships and were white and had stuff and stuff like that so that means we were entitled to the land anyways right? I mean the people just wouldn't leave when we kicked them out so that's their own fault right?

i really like this whole non-conformist "I dont wanna have a job because everyone wastes their lives behind a desk and then one day they wake up and their life is over and they havent lived their dreams" shit. i really do, i think it's important that people are wary of this.

however, you cant neglect the fact that most people NEED MONEY TO SUPPORT THEIR FAMILY. so unless you wanna be a poor hippy cult fucker, go to college, get a job. There is plenty of time for living dreams but these dreams require financing. a job is a means to an end, yes. but it enables you to do the things you want to do. the trick is a balance. fulfillment, and financial security/regularity in your life can be a good thing. dont swing the balance one way or another. keep in mind im 19 and i have no idea what im talking about when it comes to the real world. thats just what i think.

people really rush into careers though, as they want/need money after graduation and just get sucked into it. i plan on travelling for an indefinite amount of time after graduation, on extremely limited funds i will have after university. ill settle down and get a career once i feel like i have fulfilled my own desire to see / explore the world "live my dreams" and all that shit.
 
the minute i graduate college I will be going to law school or into my career. The way I see it, the faster you get into your career and start making money/saving for retirement the more you'll get paid in the future and the sooner you will retire. Retirement is when I see myself traveling the world and truly appreciating life.
 
idk how messed up it is but it is predicted that around 2050 the world population will halt at 9 billion and then start to decline. basically it is due to the massive migration to urban sites and leaving the farming and rural life behind. its kinda crazy to think that the worlds population will start declining in 40 years, and from that point how low can the population get till the inevitable happens and no humans are left. i always figured that the human population would outlive the earth but could it be possible that we don't???
