Andy Parry is one of the nicest skiers I have met.

Simon was very rude to me when I met him, but, he was in the middle of competition so I don't know if that affected his focus or whatever to make him rude.

I also met Torin at the dewtour and he was really nice and stoked on skiing. he is Three years older than me and he was sixteen at the time I think... I remember thinking that this kid is not too much older than me and he is competing at dewtour? holy shit I need to step up. He got me really stoked on progression..

So many really really nice people and skiers to name, so many that they far out way incidents with skiers being rude to twelve year old gaper fan-boys...
 
I would like to say the following to all the Simon haters in here:

I think he's changed his attitude a lot in the past year. Realizing he's not on the level in the pipe anymore was a hard realization for him to come to after being on top of the game for a long time. Now though. Now he's just out there having fun. It's so fucking awesome to watch in person. look how he skied in Dew Tour pipe. He wasn't going for the win. He was out there to have fun and show everyone what he can do with style. Nothing crazy. No not dub 12. Just classic Dumont boosting. I think we'll see more of that from him in the future.

And to that point. Simon has been a great mentor to a lot of the young pipe guys and they respect him fully and love still having him around. he was kind to them as they came up and is now inspired by their success after mentoring them for so long. I think we should all follow their lead on this one because they spend a lot more time with him and know him better than any of us.

I agree. I can't imagine that realization came easily. The slow fade while progression continues... damn. I definitely see where he's coming from.

...what? He is more stoked on skiing than almost anybody else in the sport today. If you're suggesting that he's an asshole because he's a bit uncouth, you should recheck your priorities. He seems like a genuine dude that pioneered freeskiing and loves it just as much now as he used to.
 
I don't think anyone posted so far in this thread is at all a legitimate choice, so that says good things about the industry I guess?

I don't know Simon personally, but by all accounts he's mellowed out a lot over the years, and was always a good guy fundamentally anyway, just a bit excitable.
 
The comments on Dumont's facebook post are absurd. People need to put some things in perspective. Skiing at that level for that long, laboring to stay in peak physically condition, recovering from injuries, spending weeks away from home to film and push yourself to your limits has to be absolutely exhausting. I guarantee every pro out there loses motivation from time to time. For some reason, I rewatched all of the JOSS edits from 2010 today. In the Team Canada edit, the camera-man asks the team if they want to film urban and Chug flat out says NO a thousand times. No one on here calls him out or jumps down his throat because he's the funny-guy. Say what you want about Dumont & his competitive attidude when competing was very literally his life, but he has done more this sport than 90% of the professional skiers out there. From his boosting in the pipe as an adolescent alongside Tanner, to putting out banger film segments, to sending massive hits like the quarter-pipe world record or the gapped superpipe a few years ago, there are very few athletes that are as responsible for the sport being where it is at. His attitude may have been abrasive, but god damn, the guy was a revolutionary and none of you fucks can put that in perspective.

A diamond in the rough.

Threads like this expose a classic issue on NS: there's a connectedness, and a reachability to the stars of our sports world that's completely different from baseball or track and field. However, just because we feel connected doesn't mean that passing interaction or social media perceptions can clue us in to who these people actually are. The ratio of talk to knowledge on these subjects here is 20:1.

So when a thread like this comes along, it's a bunch of random anecdotes and base opinions that color the commentary. It's nonsense.

My experience with various skiers ive come across over the years rarely match up with their public internet reputations/personas on here.

I can definitely say though, I've seen Olenick pull some weak shit on the hill in person. Way back when he still had a career, I saw him and his bro walk over around 40 peoples skis or boards. Was like they thought theyre royalty or something, cutting the entire emerald lineup on whistler from the very back to front, during the holidays. There was no comp or event going on that day, incase any ones thinking they had to make their run or something.

oddly enough, everyones favorite pro to demonize for having a big head, simon, came across totally down to earth on the hill.

Oh sure, he's stoked, about very particular aspects of skiing. He highly dislikes and has zero "stoke" for a large majority of our sport. Not to mention how obnoxious and a dick he is toward people that don't see things his way. Have you seen any of the other pro's that are named in this thread verbally fighting with fans and spewing profanity-filled, idiotic rants? How about the time he went off on video and trashed park skiing, Peter Olenick, Simon, etc?

Not sure what your definition of "douchiest asshole" is, but it seems pretty universal to me, and Tanner Hall fits that mold perfectly. For fucks sake, the dude made an Instagram post the other day about how Officer Darren Wilson is "going to get what's coming to him real soon"....And on top of that, there's some stories about him out at bars and premieres, being a real dick.

I could honestly care less. I just thought I'd chime in because everyone's pointing fingers at people you don't even know much about in the first place and effecting reputations with bullshit just cause you heard something or "met him once and he was mean, waaahhh." And yes, I have met Tanner a few times, have friends that know him, and have seen all of his online rants and arguments, so I'm somewhat familiar with the situations he brings out.

I swear that 90% of NS has tunnel vision when it comes to people like Henrik and Tanner. "Nothing wrong with them, just stoke and style brooo!" Welp, yeah, there actually is a few things wrong.

I think Henrick can come off as a bit uninformed (see his posts on how great it is being straight and not gay), but the dude just is happy to ski. He seems to give 0 fucks about anything other than having a good time skiing, and he spreads that happiness he gets from it. Doesn't seem like an asshole.

From the out side, I'm going to go with Johnny Mosely. He still gets paid by squaw to do something, even if he isn't a real "pro". Dude stole the limelight from the people who deserved it and tried to cash in as best and as fast as he could.

If someone just ate shit, or really wants to get a trick they have been trying for 45 min chances are they might want a minute to gather themselves. Doesn't mean they are fucked up/asshole pros it means they are serious about skiing sometimes and need to focus on what they are doing.

If your a fan and think a pro is an asshole because he isn't talking to you then you might want to walk over and introduce your self. Staring at someone and not saying anything is awkward for everyone, and I really dont like being pretentious by assuming every kids in the park knows who I am.

More then a few times I have gone out of my way to give kids free stuff, say "hi", or just try and make a fans day. But also a few times I have walked up to someone with a handful of swag and they turned it down, or tried to start a friendly conversation and get ignored. That makes me feel like an idiot. Or giving a kid and his friends free stuff and then get bitched at because I wont give them more. That also sucks.

this is big in real life but especially in skiing when everyone's always gooned up and our gear makes us look 1000% more serious than we've ever felt in our life

in real life and in skiing, if i catch myself making an assumption about someone like that i try to say waddup or break the ice, even if i just ask the time or the speed for a jump. it's almost always responded to with a smile and a friendly answer and those silly assumptions about what someone is like are gone with the wind..

this isn't to make a comment on this thread one way or the other-- some skiers/pros are definitely douchers but my point is don't assume that cause seriously 99% of the skiers ive met have been chill as hell

Jon began to view some of the pros as ungrateful. Afterall, Jon had organized the LARGE event(much larger than 9 knights) and was doing a great, tremendous, awesome thing for the ski community, but wasnt being shown the props he believed were deserved from the pros.

All of this friction made some of the Pros resent Jon, and Jon resent some of the pros.

then, the judging criteria for the videos was changed a few days before the deadline, and many days into the filming. this was viewed as Jon playing favorites and helping out his friends(Team Canada). I mean really, who didnt fucking love TJ and Chug. so when the films where shown and Team Americas video was the best by far according to the originaly agreed upon criteria they were understandably upset.

Team america thought that why shouild Jon make money off their video when he literally just took that money out of their pockets a day earlier. so they released their video.

Dumont & some other pros occasionally get sucked into the black hole of letting skiing become . . "ski this now, like this because it's your job otherwise you won't be paid to ski anymore" scenario automatically causes you to complain and not like it vs. continuing to ski the way you want, when you want, how you want for the FUN of it like most of today's athletes have realized is the way to go even though you may not make as much $. If you're in skiing for the money, you're confused and should instead go work on wallstreet.
