Most Disappointing Ski Segments/Movies

I was on a thread about less, and people were saying it was disappointing. Just wondering what was the biggest letdown from a segment/movie?

Hate to sound like a bunch of hippies over here but lets more focus on the positivity of people going out, filming and wanting to show our sport to as many people as possible. Yea it might not fit a mold of what certain viewers want to see but it's skiing .. and that's better to watch than .. anything.

But if the thread is simply for discussion .. we'd have to say the last decade or two of WME movies. So much potential to show a more accurate and story told account of skiing to a LARGE amount of people to get stoked to go skiing and they always fall short due to appeasing sponsors and just making skiing look .. well lame. They're skiers just like us and we're sure they have all the best intentions but they just need better direction because whether we like it or not, their tour and audience is huge.

Thoughts?

Sorry if I sounded negative, just wondering. I have nothing against any film company, just sometimes it doesn't live up to the hype

nope it's ok .. good topic yo!

I also heard Less was disappointing, and then saw that Magnus Graner had one of the snappiest urban segments I've ever seen and McChesney crushed.

At the end of the day these skiers and filmers poured hundreds of hours into a very short clip. Although I get disappointed a lot when I watch certain segments, I'm usually able to pick out a few tricks I like and just be happy to be seeing skiing on a level so much higher than my own ever will be.

Thanks for asking, it's a good question! Just a tough one to answer.

Revolver. Grand Bizarre. WE. Oh wait every PBP movie since EDIAS.

why the hate on grand bizzare? I never understand this, its one of my favourite movies...

LJ, Cam, Clayton, Martini, Powis, Sammy C, all slayed.

in my opinion that's why it's worth asking this negative question. lately i watch PBP movies and think, dude, if i put my ass on the line all winter just so the producers could make my part uninteresting by editing it badly or to some shitty song, i'd be pissed

like in revolver, it's chock full of INSANE skiing but the presentation was awful. by the time i watched tim d dub 10 chad's gap (repeat, DUB 10 CHAD'S GAP) my eyes had glazed over

If you forget the shitty powder segments in revolver and weak urban that was a sick movie. IMO best segments from tudor, jossi, simon and leboe. Parkshoot at whis was tight too

After dark. Maybe I expected too much from Eye Trip but it was overall a disappointing movie. But Level 1 redeemed themselves with Sunny.

Wow! I actually loved the pow segments in revolver... Maybe one of my all time favorite movies

Super true on the WME. They're the only real premiere to come to CT and the hartford show is packed every year with people that have never heard of newschoolers or any other ski movie for that matter. I've been to a few of them and everytime im stoked to go cause its skiing on the big screen but it just ends up being a long commercial with some crowd pleasing back flips mixed in. It's still fun but it's never anything new

Well I think I have let myself down with every single edit/segment I have ever put out or been a part of... This whole skiing thing is surprisingly difficult. The good news is that I am also stoked for and excited about every single edit/segment that has ever featured skiing at a high level.

Good luck finding one that doesn't...

maybe cause Ive only seen it once, but other than claytons segment I wasn't too impressed with mutiny

Into the mind was kind of a disappointment just because of how much I loved all I can. Hopefully Sherpas new movie will be just as good ir better than all I can.

Valhalla. What a bunch of hippy-dippy baloney.

ppl didnt like the soundtrack to Revolver, but I think a lot of the songs are good as stand alones vs back to back. May have needed some more time on the editing floor, but tons of good footage.

Grand Bizarre was sick and I liked the fact that the skiers had input on editing and song choice. Their personalities definitely came through.

And Valhalla was sick. Different kind of ski movie, which sets it apart so if you're not expecting it I can see why you wouldnt like it. Also, I think it resonates with an "older" demographic. I didnt like it the first time I watched either, but I watch this one more than TBC now...

Finally, agree that WME has so much potential to showcase to a broad crowd and miss the mark year after year bc they stick to the same old format.

I agree that every PBP movie since EDIAS didn't deliver, except for the Grand Bizarre which was actually really good. I liked the whole circus theme and LJ, Clayton, Cam, Sammy are just the few that come to my mind that killed it.

As for most disappointing movies or segments. Movies: The Recruitment, Afterdark, Burn (not nearly as good as All Damn Day).

Segments: Wesson in Less (well he's getting older and his Partly Cloudy segment was just insane), Leigh Powis in The Recruitment (I was hyped to see him back but he didn't really brought anything new).

Like There's No Tomorrow and Flow State (both WME) were craptangular. Fairly ordinary skiers skiing ordinary lines ordinarily, which was somehow exciting because it was in some crazy location that took 2 weeks of chafed balls to hike into. Interspersed with random clips that came from PBP's cutting room floor.

If I hadn't been kinda wasted with a cinema full of generally drunk and rowdy skiers it would have been very disappointing.

i really enjoyed after dark..

less was disappointing for me but only because the standard of level 1 movies is so high

whats with all the less hate? the movie was rad. from duncan's opener to LSM's insane skate part to magnus and khai and wiley that movie was sick. and it felt more like a classic level 1 movie than anything they've put out recently.

You should watch it again.

I want to, because after re-watching claytons part I was mind blown, but unfortunately I lost my dvd copy of it when I moved houses :(

i thought Into the Mind was terrible. But then again i bought it with the impression that it would a "ski film" with a bunch of big lines and cliff drops. However the film is all about showing off how well Sherpas can get EPIC shots. and the chapter with the birds flying annoyed me to HELL. I JUST WANT TO WATCH PEOPLE SKI

See this is one I would debate. I thought Revolver and WE were pretty good.. But overall, I think that EDIAS will always be the best PBP movie that has and will ever be made.

... were you expecting powder snowboarding ?

if you were expecting good urban skiing I have no idea how you could be "let down"

Not Less. I though that was sick. I was kinda let down by Days of My Youth but only because my expectations were so high.

Delmores less segment. Really 5 shots?

I thought Less was sick but was gutted delorme didn't get more shots in too. Also the fact that it was backed by plane noises-didn't enjoy that. after the trailer of that insane butter I was expecting big things to a wicked song.

Only complaint from it though, not sure why it's getting so much flak

I probably sound retarded but how come in less they only showed tim, adam, and khai at schweitzer? I thought the whole crew went up to shoot

I feel like into the mind is one of the more underrated movies. I loved it. I might be a bit biased though because Bella Coola is close to my home town.

I've been a huge ski movie fan ever since 2001 and i tend to buy at least 1 or 2 every year...

From what I hear, it sounds like Stept was solid and Less was sub-par. To be honest, I feel like Level 1 has lost their mojo ever since Refresh...I think most people on NS can agree that no Level 1 movie has felt the same as Refresh... They seem to be trailing off, getting sloppy in terms of creative segments, and losing athletes. A good example would be the SkiFi segment last year. Sure, it's cool to feature them in the film, but dedicating a 10 minute segment to that whole scene was a desperate attempt.

I lost interest in PBP over the last couple of years as well, but I have a feeling that Twenty is super sick...I'd love to hear more reviews. I haven't thoroughly enjoyed a PBP movie since EDIAS. Grand Bizarre was pretty decent, but not up to PBP's true potential. That's why I'm hoping for a lot in Twenty.

Haven't heard much about the TGR flick, so I won't comment, but I have always been a huge TGR fan ever since Tangerine Dream. A couple have sucked over the last few years, but if a TGR movie is good, it's fucking good, and I am buying that shit on blu ray because it is something to witness for sure.

MSP...What to say about MSP? I have mixed feelings because I know a couple of the athletes, but I get super annoyed with the MSP humor that gets old quickly. At the same time, I fucking love their movies and they are the most entertaining to watch year after year. Fantastic cinematography, solid cast of athletes, and a good soundtrack. The Sean Pettit silliness and dicking around can be reeled back a bit, because sometimes it detracts from the film itself.

WE & Tracing skylines were both awful. They had their good segments but overall was bad. Notibly bad segments were for sure Sammy Carlsons in WE, it was a 3 minute segment for 3 shots, bloody stupid. Nothing from poor boyz as of late has been better than EDIAS. I mean look at the trailer for Twenty it looks like they have just given up.

For level 1 after dark was not that good over all, some stunning segments but over all bad.

Agreed. The skiing was good and had sick songs, but the whole ice melting, dark Tim burton intro and effects really turned me off

+1 on that. The most dissapointing part has to be the street segment. There was honestly nothing in it, and being from Calgary they could have done so much more. It felt like a awkward chase scene in an action movie then a street segment.
