Most common ski size

we are building our first mold for a ski press and wondering which size would be most common if we were to sell them. What size skis do you prefer?

Personally anything 185 and over.

But really ski size depends on the person physicality (height/weight), the skiers ability level (better skiers should be on a longer ski) and what type of skiing the individual does (park/rails, crusing groomers, bigmountain/backcountry).

Identify the demographic you wish to market to and then go from there.

Well, it mostly depends on who you want to buy your skis. If you are making a park-rat ski, then making it smaller (170-175 range) would be smart. If you are selling an expensive pow ski, then you are catering to people who have money and prefer longer skis, so 182 cm and up would be your range. Think about your intended audience and you can narrow it down.

If it's a park ski, most people who ski park could ride a 176. Most would prefer either 171 or 181, but a lot of people wouldn't mind a 176. So if you're only going to choose one size I'd say somewhere around 176.

If it's a powder ski, 181 or 186 would probably be the most common, although a lot of people would like a 191, I think you'd get more people that would be able to ride a 181 or 186.

191. If you're building a press, might as well make it big enough to do long skis. You can always just use a smaller mold in a large press, but you cant use a larger mold in a small press.

LOL hopefully if they want to sell any.

Here's an idea:

Make your press big enough for 195's. id never use skis that big personally, but very few ski companies make nice skis in really big sizes. especially park skis. there may be a market for >181cm park skis. I know my friend is 6' 5" and complains that his volkl wall 185's are too small and squirly at high speeds. He may be an anomalie, but is there really any other untapped market for skis out there? I mean arent there already a ton of independent ski companies that all make essentially the same things? Try providing quality 190cm park skis and see how many you sell. As for a common size, 171 and 178 seem like good choices to play it safe. 178 and 185 for pow skis.

Good luck!

yeah mostly twin park skis if we can make the right insert we should be able to end up with a good all mountain ski

if you sold park skis for $200 i bet a lot of kids would buy them. Park skis are basically disposable, and spending $500 on new skis every year is ridiculous. I think you could really compete with the big ski brands if you undercut their prices like that. Of course the quality would have to be somewhat the same too.

They would make negative dollars if they only charged $200....there's a reason skis cost so much (especially for small companies), the materials used to make them cost a lot. The reason big name companies like K2/LINE can charge as little as they do (they're one of the cheapest brands out there right now) is because they can buy so much bulk supply that they can make them cheaper.

if they are rockered or at least have early rise, make them longer. I always used to ski a 175cm cambered ski in the park, then switched to an early rise 177, and they were way too short and sketchy. Last year i got some 180s and they were a bit better, but now im getting some praxis park skis in a 184 with a 25m radius, haha there gunna fuckin rip.

IDK. i bet they could make them at least cheaper than LINE and K2 skis. If they spent less on marketing, graphics, pro riders, etc...

the raw materials cant cost that much. just make some basic cheap wood core plastic capped symmetrical skis with shitty edges (cause they're going to rip out anyway). ... or no edges (:o)

if someone wants to get nice skis, they'll buy armadas or ON3Ps or some fancy shit like that. if not, why not sell them a pair of cheap ass decks they can thrash on for a year and then discard??

well seeing that im short id want smaller but seeing that everyone is around 170. i think those are probably the things to do and id make it so you can ride your own skis

I actually have a connection and can get a lot of the supplies for very little money. Also have done some shopping and questions to others who have built presses on what and what not to do. I will not have to charge to much for labor also because I have friends who will do the work if they can get skis for cheaper.

sounds like you could start a great little ski company! let us know how well that works out. have you given any thought to the name yet?

why not go 200cm? you could specialize in skis for giants.

6' 6" kids like the one above might just buy 190 park skis and 200 pow skis.
