Most annoying things ski shop employees say

"are you sure you want your dins at 10"

"are you sure you want me to center mount these"

"these skis are beat to shit, are you sure you want me to mount them"

What annoys me is when you know what ski you want to buy and the salesman tells you that it's not the best ski for you and is trying to sell you something else. Just let me buy what I want

Had a boot fitter get all offended when I said my foot size was 11.5 but I preferred to wear larger boots.

He goes on about how I dont know what I'm talking about and that I need smaller boots to have more power to my bindings.

I try them on, say they are uncomfortable and too small. He says thats a good thing and that hes been a boot fitter for a few years so he knows his shit and I dont.

Fast forward to my toes getting bruised to the point that my toenails fall off every season since due to my feet being crammed into these boots.

I get thay you should trust professionals but I hate it when ski shop people are too enamored with themselves to listen to their customers needs.

One time I took my skis into the shop at the local hill to have stripped screws replaced before I skied for the day. Turns out the holes were actually rotted out. So I gave my skis to the one guy there and he was like alright we can fix it. They take the heelpeice off to discover the 2 back holes were rotted. The guy brings my ski back out and was like uh yeah we’re gonna have to put some heli coils in to fix it. And I say yeah uh I’m gonna ski today and tomorrow and bring it back in and leave them here for the week and pick them up next weekend. The dude proceeded to tell me how I would kill myself if I took a hard fall (I told him I’d ski easy) and that MFer refused to put the heelpeice back on my ski even tho I asked him to several times. So I had to miss out skiing that day and it was a perfect bluebird and some freshies as well. So I dropped lkke 50 bucks on rentals cuz I really wanted to ski that day then I go to ski the next morning and go pick the skis up and they tried to charge me an extra 20 bucks for no reason. I was pissed but oh well.

Moral of the story is don’t trust anyone in a shop that don’t know what their doin, so pretty much only trust the manager or most experienced dude there.

“Well if you like to ski on edge you need to buy these *points to some slalom ski or carver* but I guess if youre on your bases and dont like turning you can get twin tips”

I dont go to shops anymore, I was talking to some shop reps on the lift last season during the demo day where shops get to test out next years skis and I didnt see a single person on park skis one of the reps was trying to already sell me some stockli bullshits and I was like “what about park skis?” And he literally said “Kids just want the wutang skis and if their friends buy them first they dont want them anymore so its not worth it to stock anything but one model of rossis or maybe wu tang skis if I figure out what those are” I was fucking dying, freeskiing is so out of sync with the industry right now its kinda ridiculous

Well i guess they did what they're supposed to do. Cause if they would've put the heel piece back and you crashed you could've gone back and sued them :0? (Eventhough you asked) theres no proof for that i guess.

that sucks man, helicoils don't take that long to do, and if it was something they're worried about fully drying before putting it out they should have hooked you up with a free ski for the day (or at least discounted)...

Not the worst, but the funniest

I was at a ski shop getting my old gotamas tuned up a bit at the beginning of last season when it was shit conditions early season by a friend who works there and offered to do it for a good six pack of beer. Two guys in their 40s come in and start talking about how they came here from NY and are looking forward to skiing "those hard charging big mountain lines they hear all their friends talk about and it's their first time in Utah." My friend looks at the other employee and they share a gaze and he nods. Other employee proceeds to direct them straight to the soul 7s and they both end up renting a pair for the week. Ask my friend why he did that. "Somebody has to give the locals a fair warning that those guys can't ski for shit." Now that I think about it, I have yet to see someone who's better than me on a set of soul 7s, and that's not saying a ton.

sounds like you're just a bad skier who spends all day backseat and jams his toes forward as a result.

do you know how to find the front of your boot ??

my mates and myself got kicked out of a store in japan for waiting bus when it freezing outside and there was legit no where else to go. we were just sitting on the floor minding our business

this was after I dropped over 2k from buying a whole new setup from their store.

Normally I'd agree with you cuz im not above believing my skiing is an issue, but its a problem when I walk in them or even have a mellow day skiing. I would hope I'm not that bad.

But since you such an adept skier would you care to tell me how to fix that issue?

Bingo! But the shop guy is an idiot....

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=newschoolers.com+toe+bang

Seriously though, toe bang isn't usually from a boot size that's too short. When you do a shell fit on boots that are "comfortable" or upsized what are the results?

Going a up a size and getting better liners towards the end of this season made an enormous difference. Its something I wish I would have done sooner.

Part of the reason it took me so long was that I thought I was doing something wrong. But I never had the issue with previous boots or my current ones. Both of which are larger than the set that gave me issues.

more like "im not going to set your din beyond 8, that's unsafe"

Liability.

If someone mounts your bindings and cranks the din way past what the din chart recommends for your height / weight / skier ability, and you hurt yourself, that shop can get pretty screwed. Don't fight shop employees over what din you want, just set it yourself, they've got a lot more to lose by cranking it way past what it should be at and it's ridiculously easy to do on your own.

Overly exaggerated with the whole killing yourself thing, but liability. Those screws would have ripped out in a heartbeat and you would've been in a worse situation you were before.

liability.

This is true, but you always sign waivers and they don't have to be dicks about it like they often are. Just be like yo, I'm gonna set them to 5 so we we aren't liable but you can crank em as high as you want.

About 1/3 the time I get judged for walking in wearing desk job clothes (button up and tie) since it’s on my way home. If I’m not walking in with my setup, usually takes a min before they stop treating me like an idiot and realize I’m not a random finance bro dickhead looking for soul 7s or dps, but to be fair I look like one.

Also, condescending bootfitters at shops that don’t specialize in it are the worst.

According to your pics you're throwing corks, so I kind of doubt your skiing is the issue.

Was about to meme but this is more important: Bootfitters will not ALWAYS get it right. You can go to a fancy one and he/she can still fuck your feet up. I went through two pairs of new boots (due to my weird specialized foot) and 5 toenails BEFORE finding a pair of really plain Salomon boots and now they are the reason I am able to get so many days in. And the person that picked it out? some kid in highschool that probably took a basic training in bootfitting

At the end of the day, Bootfitters are still salesman, they have an incentive to sell you what's popular and what's going to be expensive. There's not good way to know that you are finding the best possible fit unless you educate yourself and just keep trying on boots.

Just kidding, get full tilts

10/10 edit unfortanetly they were full tilts.

But thank you for saying that cuz it's what I was thinking but couldnt get across.

It's frustrating when a bootfitter is condescending and sets you up with bad fitting boots. I wouldn't be that upset about badfitting boots. It was the attitude of "You can't question me I know more than you" in combination with the boots that really grinded my gears. He probably would rather go talk to the guy buying a pair of Wailers behind me than whether or not my park gear was the way it should be. But I digress.

The current shop that I go to seemed to actually care about whether or not my equipment was the way I wanted it, and not how they thought it should be.

Liability is the biggest issue here. Dont argue with ski shop employees. We are strictly trying to cover our asses because people nowadays sue over any stupid reason. If we hand you a ski and you want your dins higher. You do it yourself. I work in a shop that currently has a lawsuit going on and its fucking stressful on everyone because everyone that touched that ski gets questioned under oath in court if something goes wrong. Just be understanding and respectful and you will get the same in return. Getting sued sucks.

Once my gotamas are basically done for I am slightly tempted to mount them backwards for meme factor and challenging people to race me if they think they know better

My Dad still gets pissed at me on hill when I ski "backwards". He says you're supposed to ski forwards. Don't really know why, switch carving is fun, get over it bro.

this is so true its just annoying when the employees are dicks about it. Just be upfront and don't try and say some stupid shit like "theres no way you ever need your dins over 6" or "you're gonna kill yourself" or some BS. Just be like yo, were liable if we crank the dins so I'm gonna set them at the suggested and you can do whatever you want afterwards.

Not saying that all ski shop guys are like this but probably 95% of my experiences have been along those lines.

Centre mounting is dumb as fuck unless the ski is 100% symmetrical

Yep but some ski shop technicians seem to think it's always dumb as fuck. "You don't ski backwards enough for it to matter" buddy I promise you that I do. Just do it I'm paying you money

*Hands in mounting form*

Me: "So where do I write down that I want them center mounted?"

Ski guy: "Well you should have said that earlier so I can right it on the form."

Me: "Well the form didn't have a spot for that and i'm telling you now."

that's fair, you are the one paying for it, but I would always recommend going -1 or -3 cm's back. it's going to put you in a better spot for the skis turn radius which will actually make it easier to ski switch. really depends on the ski but most of the time they aren't designed to be mouthed dead centre. Every pro I mounted skis for would get their park skis between -1 to -3cm back.

this. you want the midsole of your boot at the narrowest part of the sidecut which should make the ski turn its best, forwards or backwards

this ski is for expert skiers, you can tell by the way it is.

my favourite thing though was last year I was helping my mom pick out some new boots. she had 2 pairs of the same boot with different flex and she asked the shop guy what the difference was, and he goes "uhhhhh...they both have walk mode".

“If I cant center mount these would you rather them be infront or behind center”

who tf is getting their skis mounted + center

Is the brand "kartel"?

First time the cute little Midwest rugrat saw on3p's. Blew their mind to be in the presence of something besides line skis, volkls, and Rossi 7's.
