Mormons in utah (SLC area)

The reason I had to get out of the northwest is because it rains too much, and I like doing things outside. Don't try to tell me that it isn't that bad because I grew up in the PNW for over 10 years. Yes there are many great things about Seattle and Portland, but the fact that I couldn't enjoy the things I cared most about due to the rain outweighed them all.
To me, the fact that SLC lacks some of the great things of Seattle like the culture and people is far outweighed by the landscape, climate, and abundance of facilities for my favorite interests. But again, this is what I found due to my preferences, it certainly isn't the right answer for someone else.

Go UTAH. From a chiroprachtic standpoint, i dont think that the mormons would limit what you do. My friends dad is a chiroprachter and people always think just because there is mormons here it is bad service as a chiroprachter. People think they are a lot more close minded and wouldn't really try chiroprachting i guess. I absolutely don't think you would have any problems here. From a living standpoint It is waaay more chill in utah than people think definately come shred some pow poww

SLC as a whole is great! The mormon situation could only be an issue in the sort of situation you described. An all mormon neighborhood would NOT be a good Idea. Research whatever neighborhood you plan to move to and the schools the kids would be enrolled in.

I grew up in a very dense mormon population it was 100% different for me when I was younger, once high school came around it wasn't near as bad.

Everything in your post is most surely possible but unlikely.

ok...dont compare seattte to portland cause. portland is way better then seattle could ever be.its true.. every one knows it.. and seattle is all bitchy about it.... and seattle is more depressing of a city they have more cloudy days than portland..
get a rain coat you pussy. summers in oregon cannot be beat anywere.

It really isn't that bad. Just stay to the east of I-215 and you should be set. Anywhere west of it is a shithole with churches on every block. I'm not kidding. I first lived there when my family moved here 3 years ago. It fucking sucked. Everyone was a fucking weirdo and people wouldn't even bother talking to you if you weren't part of the church. It was fucked up. We currently live now on the eastern side of the valley on the mountain benches right near the mouth of parleys canyon. Its awesome. Not a lot of mormons. Its mostly a jewish and greek dominant area.

i think it just depends on your tolerance and what part of SLC you decide to live in.

Yes. Eastern side near the mountains and mountain benches = skiers and snowboarders mostly. Utah is a kickass state to live in as far as skiing goes.

As long as you don't mind being in view of an LDS church at all times, then fuck it, go for it. Better than west coast concrete and overblown/overexposed CO.
Just don't ask anyone there how to get to Chad's gap from the bottom of Alta...

honestly the only thing UT lacks is Ocean, other than that it is the perfect state. Ok some things could be better but pretty damn close

I lived in Utah and Portland and Utah is much better for families. The kid I skied with skied for Oakley and he was a Mormon, he was bad ass but really religious.... Good balance. Of course with all religions there are a few bad apples that ruin it for everyone. I'm working in Idaho in sun valley resort and found Idaho to be the worst out of all

My main problem with SLC is that the city and surrounding suburbs are so god damn ugly and generic. i guess that could describe the culture as well. But the mountains are a ok.

look into Boise, ID. not a bad place, still high plains topography, still mountains all around you, plus it's decently close to the tetons. its a big city, not too big and I was pleasantly suprised when i passed through

Draper is the worst. Sure its "nice" if you like having the exact same house as every other person in your subdivision. Really, anything south of 2100 and and west of State blows.

I beg your pardon?

Nirvana is from Seattle.

But seriously. Portland and Seattle, best cities ever. NY gets more inches of rainfall per year than Seattle.

oh, and then there is Bumpershoot...

Why are you people still arguing about the "best" place to live! It is completely preference!!! You are retarded! It is like arguing about the best color!

I'm Mormon, and I know quite a few other kids on NS that are too.

I know a lot of you have been saying this in this thread, but really Mormons are more normal than you think. It's a religion. I don't know anyone who would discriminate against a business, or in your case a chiropractor because they aren't mormon.

I don't think you would necessarily care if your neighbors were mormon, you get your standard spectrum of neighbors, your crazy neighbors, your nice neighbors. But our church teaches a lot about helping people out, so if anything it would probably be a good thing.

I'm not gonna lie though you do run into Mormon crazies sometimes, where they would probably be judgmental or whatever... But they bother me just as much as you.

Dont worry about the mormons. I lived in Salt Lake all last year and am moving back in a month until spring if that tells you anything. I have heard similar stories about extreme mormons who discriminate against people who are not apart of their religion and dont let their kids play with non mormons, ect. But that story I heard was not from Salt Lake, but from someone who grew up in some small town in the middle of no-where Utah, and they told me they were the only non-mormon family in the town. Salt Lake city is actually very liberal and non-judgmental in a lot of ways, which is surprising to people who assume everyone there is mormon. There are plenty of non mormons in Salt Lake.
As for the alcohol laws, same shit as CO i guess, 3.2% by weight instead of volume in grocery stores and gas stations. So you have to go to state liquor stores, which close earlier than liquor stores else where, but once again not a big deal you just have to plan ahead or have a bottle stashed away.

mormon history is super interesting.....and disturbing.

and i know you can say that about most churches, but the difference is that the mormonism is a fairly recent invention, which makes the atrocities the LDS church committed worse in my opinion.

I am fortunate to have literally travelled the globe - from India to New Mexico, from Alaska to Singapore.... and i can tell you this...

Utah was the most difficult place i've ever been to get drunk! I even got shouted at when i tried to take MY beer from the bar, to the restaurant seating area - someone had to bring it to me... da fuck?!

Park City is not really Utah - it's an oasis of sanity when it comes to drinking... but it's definately an exception, not the norm.

It all just seems very unecessary - I think Denver would put more work your way too.

That said - i'll be back in Ut this winter im sure because the mountains are awesome and it's all very accessible - which is a key point to make i think.

on a day to day basis its really not that bad, and it is nice to live in such a safe city. but the way that religion has influenced the society can get really annoying. the schools still teach abstinence only sex ed, and so theres a really high teen pregnancy rate. also a big chunk of the homeless youth are kids who come out to their parents and get kicked out. and if you ever planned on voting for the left in a national election your votes not gonna matter. as far as alcohol goes, kegs are illegal, and the beer u pick up at a gas station is weaker than beer in other states.

the mormons you meet are almost always really nice people tho. but when you live in salt lake it feels like your either mormon or your NOT mormon, and you know whose who. idk its nice but this isn't where i would want to stay forever.

also the public schools in general just aren't that good. i wouldn't want to raise a kid here, but other than that life in slc is pretty chill.

sorry for the triple post but sandy is pretty lds. the nicer parts of sugar house and the wasatch area are more secular.

Unless you guys pray to the basketball gods what the fuck is a full size basketball court doin in the center of your wards/churchs, if you ask me thats just weird
