So the great lakes and it seems lake michigan in particular have been rather warm this year. I hear that this impacts snowfall making for a more snowy then usual winter, is this true? Much thanks, and sorry if repost.

Yes supposedly the north-east is going to get way above average snowfall this year, along with the east. I think we have to after a terrible winter and our summer has had little precipitation also.
It all depends on the weather this fall. If the weather trends warm and allows the lakes to maintain a higher than average temperature leading into winter, it typically results in increased snowfall.
Lake effect snowfall is caused when there is a certain temperature gradient between the air and the lakes. Winds and air pressures play a role too. When the factors line up, snow occurs. The greater the water temperature come December, the greater the intensity of lake effect snows.
However, a lot can happen to the water temperatures by December.
