Montana State VS University of Montana

the skiing around missoula is pitiful, snowbowl is close but its a joke of a ski area, lost trail is tight but its like 2+ hrs away then anywhere else you will want to go is like 2-3 hrs away. bozeman has bridger bowl 20 mins from town and has some of the best terrain in north america and then bigsky/moonlight is about 50mins away and big sky is a huge sick resort with a little of everything and moonlight is a smaller but just as legit mountain as big sky. missoula has a better college scene for sure but bozeman is really fun too. I recommend MSU.

be careful at those schools. i know at least 10 people that have went to UM and 30+ including myself at MS, and a total of about 5 people graduated from both schools combined. Im not saying they're bad schools at all. I loved MS, it just wasn't for me. So much drugs/partying, which is fine it that's your thing. And when i say "so much" i mean crazy excessive.

oh and bridger and big sky are fucking sick. both places will teach you to be a damn good all around skier. bridger is only 15-20 min away from bozeman too

Big midwest/east coast schools party way harder than anyone at msu. Easy solution: party when you dont have shit to do. If you can't manage your time well, you're not going to do well at any college, period.

Pretty sure this could be said at any school. Make school your first priority before all of that hoopla.

i get that, i just am constantly hearing about younger kids I know going there and dropping out half way or switching schools after a year.

not trying hate on MSU, im pretty sure they have one of the best/hardest architecture schools in the country. i heard their film school is pretty good too. campus is sweet, there's pretty fun longboarding all over the place

Definitely Montana State if you're a skier. Missoula has basically no skiing while Montana State is the best skiing school in the country along with U of Utah. MSU and U of U are basically the only 2 colleges to go to if you are a hardcore skier.

No kidding. There's like 10000 of you. Speaking of, who has a couch for me to sleep on in January?

in terms of skiing.. MSU. in terms of an education, look into what each school has to offer and make your decision accordingly. where ever you end up, plan your schedule out wayyy in advance so that you can stack either MWF or TR with classes and ski the other days.

[CLAIM]i skied 70 days last year, kept a 3.9 gpa, and paid less than it would have cost me to go in-state in MN.[/Claim]

what do you mean "a joke of a ski area?"

yea they dont have the best management, groomers, fastest lifts, better snowmaking, park, or any of that stuff but they have some of the best terrain in the state. except for the addition of the tram at Big Sky, Snowbowl has the largest vertical drop in the state. so what do you mean by a "joke of a ski area?"

Snowbowl is your oldschool ski area and it has that rustic feel. Yes, people complain about what i listed above but suck it up and ski some of the best terrain in the state. This year snowbowl is going to put in a small terrain park if that is what you are after, but the mountain has way more to offer. i love skiing park, but there is so much more out there. come ski snowbowl and if your are nice maybe i will show you where to go.

You can defend snowbowl all you want, ive been there a couple times and skied around. I guess maybe with a big dump (which they don't get very often) it could be fun but otherwise that place sucks. I was there in like the middle of february like 5 years ago and they only had one lift open and a rope tow and there were bare patches all over, in the middle of february. I guess its definitely a possibility that in the past 5 years it could have somehow gotten better, but I mean if you want to UM and were expecting a sick place to ski cause it was montana, snowbowl would be very disappointing.

yea i can see that. i did come out to UM from the east and was expecting rediculously awesome places to ski but i did find snowbowl and fell in love. I have also never skied in Utah, colorado, california, or the northwest to put a little perspective on my views. here is something that was posted in a regional thread by a friend a while back that is funny and true to an extent.

there are a ton of threads on this.

every single one will say the exact same things.

1.Claim: snowbowls park sucks. Fact: there is no park at the bowl. so therefore it can't suck. It also lacks groomed runs or grooming at all really. On the plus side there are very few little kids there, college freshmen in bright colors, or gapers. Snowbowl is for people who believe in "more carve less jib" style skiing and if they want to get gnarly aren't afraid to go there. The bar is also the greatest place in the world. period. anyone who disagrees I will fight.

2.Claim: Lost Trail is the greatest place in the world. Fact: LT puts on a decent park, gets pummeled with snow, and is pretty inexpensive. It's also so not steep in most places that it sucks if the snow gets too deep because you can't get speed. There is also a ton of families and small children there, and the percentage of freshman and highschool kids in bright colors is among the highest in the state.

3.Claim: Big Mountain is better. Fact: Big mountain in a lot of ways is better, it's got amazing terrain, deep snow and a solid park, and fast chairlifts. On the negative side the chairs are arranged in such a dumb manner that most of the time you spend skiing is run outs back to the chair instead of shredding top to bottom. That gets annoying as hell, and there is nothing to do in whitefish...

4. Claim: Move to Bozeman. Fact. Bozeman has a bunch of really big hills all located really close to it. It's also got the highest tourist content in Montana which kills coming to montana. Big sky is rad, but rocky and hella expensive, bridger is sick, but only the upper half, and it gets skied out quick. And MSU has way more dudes than girls, which is pretty lame, as well as the town which is geared a lot more around tourism than being a place to live. That might be fun for people under 25, but it gets old fast.

As you can see each place has its pros and cons. pick your style and run with it.

My oldest son is currently in his 2nd yr at MSU, and he isnt even a skier...yet! He loves the school and is majoring in business. Neither he or I had a good feeling, vibe, when we visited UofM. Bozeman is a great little college/ski town as well!

hmm that is interesting, ive never heard someone say they prefer bozo college vibe over zoo town college vibe, but thats cool your bro in business there, is the business school good there ? i am in the business program at u of m and was always interested how bozos business program was...

I bet its only going to get better after that 25 Million Dollar Donation to the College of Business from Jake Jabs

University of Utah is probably the best ski school out there. PC, Alta, Snowbird, Canyons, Brighton and Solitude all within 30 minute or less of a drive.

But, to answer you question MSU is the better ski school in Montana, Bridger Bowl and Big Sky are all pretty close.

FTC you guys check out that game? ha just kidding but skiing around missoula is decent Lost trail is like 2 hrs away and thats where i always go because there is some really fun skiing there unless lookout pass is getting killed which they usually always do. But Bozeman has way better skiing no doubt the mountains around here are much smaller mountains.

Ok first of all the coming from a park rider at LT the people at Snowbowl are fucking dicks if you ski park and want to ski park there. All they care about is skiing and the park Zoo crew is gonna put in this ear will not be managed at all. But yes the Pizza at the bar is good.

And all you said about LT is true except theres a lot of wanna be park sheders for sure. Im not one of them

Where do you get these facts from?

(1) MSU: 53% Male, 47% Female - www.montana.edu/opa

(2) College Rates for Season Passes (preseason purchase):

Moonlight - $490

Big Sky - $590

Bridger - $670

Plus you can get a six-pack of 16oz coors light for $6 at the base of Big Sky. I would like to see another mountain that you can get beer cheaper at the base.

That just sounds like any college, in any town, usa. There is always the drug scene where people are doing copius amounts of blow and adderall every day, Ounces of weed every couple of days, and then acid trips and ecstasy on the weekends. Its at every college.

MSU is the place to go for skiing. If you live on campus they have a bus that picks you up right outside your dorm room and takes you up to the mountain for free. it picks up twice a day morning and afternoon. UM is no place for a skier. The hills are too far away and have no snow half the time.

More like a 7-10minute walk in ski gear for the bus that now costs $40 for 23 rides or 5bucks a ride. And it only picks up now at 8am.
