MODS: ORGANIZE BST

I was recently getting frustrated with the clutter in BST. Its hard to find certain things, and in the search bar, you may end up mistaking a sale from a year ago for one that is current. That is why I am proposing the idea to organize BST.
Create groups. Like in regionals, how you click regionals and then you select your region. Such as, Skis, Goggles, Helmet, Hoodies, you catch my drift. This would make it much easier.
Open a delete function for the thread creator. When the sale is done, let them delete it, so someone doesn't get stoked on finding something they were looking for, send the seller a pm, only to be let down
Thoughts?

I think there should AT LEAST be hardgoods and softgoods sections, and clearly a WTB and a FS section. It's annoying digging through millions of WTB's. Now, I'm not saying I don't make some of my own because I do, but I really think organization would be good. And yeah, having a delete button just for threads in BST would be a good idea as well.

In addition, I think that when you make a thread, you should have to fill out a template-like page, in which you will input certain words or phrases relating to your sale, and it would generate an appropriate title. This would make things much much easier to find & read.

they had classified a while ago, but people never used them.

i personally think its fun to browse through the sales, its like shopping!

I like the idea of making FS/WTB sections, but i feel like nobody would look in the wtb section and it would die

I should elaborate. Initially, it's going to get divided up into categories. Most likely "Want to buy" and "For sale."

Also, we're working on doing away with feelers, because most of them are claims anyways. Sell it or don't.

This should help to keep people's threads on the front page longer, and it will be easier to navigate.

Updates will go from there.

I think we should just make it a rule that you have to put either

FS:, FT: or WTB:

before your thread title, if your thread doesn't say that then it gets deleted. Also auto delete for non descriptive lot sales.

then we would see like

FS: Huge Sale! (Jackets, Pants, Full Tilt, Oakley Goggles, Ipod)

instead of

Huge sale!

Yes and it would be great to have a template so people have to write a price. Nothing gets me more pissed as "offer" "I'm not sure" or any bullshit excuse.

that would be sick... if u put in an item fill out the form for that item and just paste another form for your secodn item... something liek that... so nothing gets left out

Problem is B/S/T is so hard to regulate.

Having multiple sections isn't exactly a good thing either because multiple threads have multiple items. Plus it would be really specific and unnecessary.

Some clean up and better guide lines should be in place though.

+Pictures

+Prices(Even if it is just a price in mind so it can be flexible)

+Condition

+Info about buyer, etc etc

The thread in B/S/T that has all the info should be more widely viewed

Sometimes people don't really think before they post as a new member and don't realize that what they are doing is wrong. Maybe for B/S/T there must be a "Terms of Service" you must agree to before you can list an item.

Another note. If you are buying in B/S/T or selling there as well use your brain. You can't expect the site to be foolproof, there are scammers there are flippers. the thing is don't do business with them and they become less of a problem.

A good rule of thumb I use when I am selling is to give my buyer the option to add me on facebook, or if it is a bigger item my phone number to talk to me directly. If you have good contact as a seller you make it easier for the buyer to have faith in their purchase. Contact and getting across the quality of the items is a big thing.

If you are a potential buyer and something seems sketch, ask for more info/pictures, if they won't put out, don't buy their shit, simple as that. As a seller it is the smart thing to do is your homework, feedback, threads, karma, post quality, picture quality, description quality all contribute to a persons legitness. You have the right to ask questions cause it is your money.

Sparknotes: B/S/T doesn't have to be changed, just used more efficiently.

I like the idea of having a certain format for the thread title. As previously stated, FS, FT, and WTB sections would be cool, but WTB's would die, and big sales would have trouble going into sections if it were switched into a category mode.

The problem with having a specific format is lots of people just wouldn't do it.

Admins - it's a long shot but what if you had to read / take like a 5 question quiz on FAQ's for the activation process? Not enough people read stickies.

The topic is being discussed already as of about a week ago. We are definitely looking to make some changes.

We feel that forum format classifieds work the best, but that there needs to be better consistency with the arrangement.

This idea has been tossed around a few times in the past couple years that I've been here, and I think it's a great one. No need to get TOO over the top with sub categories (such as jackets, pants, bindings, boots), A Simple FS and WTB section would suffice.

This way, when someone is looking to buy something they dont have to read all the feelers and wtb threads. For example, I have a thread right now saying that I want to buy some FKS 155. If someone else is looking to buy the same bindings, they will immediately see FKS 155 and get excited (oo finally!) only to be disappointed that it is a WTB thread from some asshole like me.

In lieu of subsections, I think a tag system would work. When you make a sale, whether it be one item or 20 you can tag your sale with certain things that are searchbar-able. If I had a sale selling A jacket, skis and bindings, It could be tagged with those three 3 things, that way if someone wants to buy just skis, they could search the "skis" tag and see only threads with skis for sale. This would also solve the problem of breaking up big FS threads into multiple threads. I think Tags such as: Skis, Bindings, Boots, Jackets, Pants (technical jackets and pants that is, waterproof ones, not your jiberish jeans or hoodies), Non tech clothing, and a miscellaneous section (Hats, gloves, DVD's whatever) would suffice.. (feel free to add suggestions, this isn't perfect obviously)

I realize this would take more moderation and people would inevitably tag things wrong, but it would be a step in the right direction for sure. This is why I am offering my services as a BST mod, for a low fee of 10 billion dollhairs per year.

I just wrote an essay.... looks like the adderall has kicked in lol

Oh, and it also doesn't help that it seems like a ton of feeler threads are in actuality just wild claim threads with little odds of the person actually selling.

It's either for sale for $xx or it's not for sale. None of this, "welllllllll I mayyyyyyyy sell it but I don't know, but check out my jibberish!!11221111l1" shit.

Yes, this is a huge pain in the ass. I'd say 1/10 feeler threads are worthwhile, even those ones should probably just FS threads. Cmon, everone has their price.

Also, I think in EVERY FS needs to have prices listed, no best offer shit. It's a pain in the ass to buyers. And to be totally honest, anytime I've ever sold anything on NS I've had WAY more luck when I listed a price. It seems to me like when people just put "Best offer" that they trying to make profit or scam idiots who don't know what the item is worth. Just my 2 Cents.

^yeah, best offer is annoying if there isnt anything price wise at all. Like if you say like 150 or best offer i think thats fine.

Please make people list there price or O.B.O, If someone tell's me to offer on there stuff I don't even want to deal with it so I never respond. Just put a price everyone has an idea of what they want to get for their stuff.

I feel like this could work for Gear Talk also. Like, separate it into skis, bindings, etc. Don't make ones for boots though because people shouldn't come to Newschoolers asking for boot help.

I would love this, and the tag system would be great too. Then you could just searchbar the thing you want and all of the stuff for sale would pop up. I think if we didn't do subcategories that would be fine but what I think would be helpful would be an internal search bar for only bst. That way, if you wanted to search "jibberish" you could go to ppl selling them and not have to sift through everybody asking advice in gt and chatting in ski gabber.

Well its finally time to take action here and make the B/S/T forums more usable.

The first order of business is to divide Buy from Sell and Trade. Think of them now as "Want, Don't Have" and "Have, Don't want". This should simplify things depending on what side of the transaction you are on. Over time we will move threads to their appropriate forum, so bear with us if things are in the wrong place for a bit.

We've also eliminated Feelers, which simply clutter the forum with claims and people looking to price gouge.

As a final attempt to keep order, we will be on the look out for excessive bumping. We understand you want your thread visible on the front page, but if you are bumping your thread hourly, with no other responses in between 40 times in a row, theres a chance noone wants your stuff. Excessive bumping may result in your thread being sent back to the depths, or deleted all together.

As far as having templates, categories and searchable, that would be a classified ads section, which we have proposed time and again and people seem to not want. We'll make use of the forums the way they are, with some attempts and keeping it organized as much as possible

i agree with you in the fact that some kids bump their threads every 20 minutes, but deleting a thread completely defeats the purpose of having a thread if you cant bump it when its off the first page. usually theres someone on here who will want your stuff no matter how long it has been up for without selling.

Excessive bumping is the keyword. Once a day or so is reasonable. Once an hour is excessive.
