MLK Pilchuck Clusterfuck

Okay, so I was thinking. Resorts are going to be absolutely shitty this upcoming MLK weekend. I'm over trying to ski the same slope as 300 other people. I'm sure some of you may be as well.

In any case, I suggest a solution: A hike. Something short and easy, with a summit, and some cool terrain. Mt Pilchuck, from what I remember, has all of these features. I climbed it as a kid, and on that one, we didnt need skins so much due to the trail being heavily used. Not to sure it will be the same, so suggestions from someone who's hiked it recently? Also, this is all subject to change if avy danger gets bad, I'd just not prefer to fuck with slabby snow even though the trail is mostly woven around trees and all.

Oh yeah, and if this solidifies, open invitation, bring yourself, your snowboarder friends, ect. Post where you are if you'll be needing a ride, we'll probably have an open seat or two.

Directions:

From the Everett area,

take State Route 92 through Granite Falls. Continue straight ahead,

down Stanley St, and turn left at the stop sign (by the car wash). Go

straight through the next stop (now on the Mountain Loop Highway).

Continue down Mountain Loop several miles until you go over the

silver/blue bridge. Immediately after the bridge, turn right. It is

clearly labeled Mt Pilchuck. Follow the well used road until it ends in

a parking lot (former ski lodge). There is a pit toilet and sign

clearly marking the start. Sign in just up the trail from the parking

lot. For more info and trail conditions, stop at the Verlot Ranger

Station.

no fucking way am I going out in the back country right now. especialy affter the warming trend that is going to happen. so many people dead this year from avy related deaths.

MLK day is always a clusterfuck, but avy danger is too high for most sane people to ski open, un controlled faces. theres a reason the Alpy b.c hasnt opened yet. Fuckin loco how many people have died.

On a second thought, skiing the backside of Hyak down to the valley (dinosaur chair) is always hella fun. That would be a some what sane/safe ski trip.

not getting MLK or Prez Day Mondays off is gonna make my office more unstable than the warming trend will to the snowpack

I skied a bit of Pilchuck a couple years back in May. Had to park two miles out and hike in 70 degree weather. Was a bitch. But I have always wanted to ski Pilchuck in the winter, too bad I am in Ellensburg fr school right now. I would definitely be down if I was back in Everett.

Yeah, its off. Shitty shitty snowpack = shit I do not want to fuck with. I'm also going down to Oregon anyways, and to the MONSTERJAM TO SEE GRAAAAAAAVEDIGGER.

Glad to see the avie sense prevailing.

We just had two people killed in an avie just outside the boundary here. Shook a lot of people up.

I just read the nwac forceast it doesn't look like anything severe is happening. A little warm up on friday but FL should be back down for the weekend.

I don't know anything about mt. pilchuck but I'm always game to explore, I'm sure there are some safe lines somewhere there.

With the pack the way it is right now, if something slides, its going to be massive and heavy. = death. Be careful if you're out there, consider working on your park skills instead for the next week or so...

your talking about it sliding on the crust that is 10+ft down? I highly doubt a skier's weight will set that off. I agree if it slides that big, you're probably dead, but I doubt that it would be triggered by you.

Anyways nobody seems up for this pilchuck crap. I'll be dicking around stevens slackcountry this weekend looking for powder then.

I have some pics of skiing pilchuck in march. its so worth it! I had skins and all the backcountry necessitys
