Mixing bindings?

ok, so ive been poking around on ebay and clist and looking at old looks and rossi's, theres no diff i can see with the old FKS type heal pieces and you can get them cheap but the toe pieces look dumb and old, so heres my question... say i got some px 12 TYPE toe pieces cause thats the toe piece for the new FKS wouuld that work? i talked to my dad about it and he said in theory it wont work when they need to... so heres my question...

SPARK NOTES: will the vintage FKS type heal piece work with a new PX12 TYPE toe piece?

+k for legit answers

Normally, mixing toes and heels seats your boot badly and you pre-release. Is all down to the angle of the boot when its seated in the binding. I know you can exchange some parts within brands, but for this, refer you to another expert.

Good luck getting a shop to mount these for you without a special favor.

Ya a shop will never mount these for you unless you are good friends with them or you buy them about 100 beers. Even then they probably still wont.

It might work actually, normally mixing bindings is a terrible idea, but in this case it might work. The only problem I see is with the lift of the PX12 toe piece, normally the FKS toe piece is lower (although if you run the stock risers it might bring it up to the same height as the PX12 toe piece..not really sure and I don't have any PX12s around to check). Its worth bringing it to a shop to see if they will...if they do it then you'll be fine, if they say the can't/don't recommend it then don't and see if you can find some FKS toes in the BST or something.

hmm, but they all look the same? so the hight is whats going to do it? what if i take off the stock riser off of the px 12 toe piece then would it be the same hight? who is someone i should ask? and as to if the shop would mount them... why wouldnt they? liability? because they are the same as the new ones that they sell there?

Then you'd have to find a riser from some FKS bindings...the riser usually has the AFD on it. As far as them not mounting, it has a bit to do with liability, also (not so much in this case, but in others) it requires a different jig to mount (again, not a problem here). They also like to stay pretty normal, they don't usually mix and match stuff at shops...

whats the AFD? how difficult would it be to find a pair of the risers, basically what wouuld i be looking at to get the mounted properly? with px12 toe pieces?

The AFD is the white pad on the toe piece. You're also going to more than likely run into indemnification issues with the old FKS heels.

Yeah, AFD stands for Anti-Friction Device, it' basically helps your toe slide out on a release.

Most shops see all FKS as being indemnified (even though technically FKS 120, 140, and 180 is on the list), especially since it's the heel piece, the only reason some of the older FKS bindings got off the list is cause of the toes, the heel piece pretty much hasn't changed since the binding was created.

Seriously, you're really much better off just looking for an actual FKS toe piece, I'm not sure why you want to run the PX12 toe so much, if you look around you can probably find someone who only has a pair of toes lying around that would be willing to sell.

If you have the px12 toes already then that will work as long as they have the same AFD that the FKS toes have, which for the most part are identical. I have FKS 120s that didn't have AFDs when I bought them and my shop had some AFDs from a pair of px12 jibs that were identical to the ones for the FKS. The FKS 120/140 toes are identical to px12/14 toes, just different graphics/name. Just for a visual, the toes in the link are the exact same ones as mine besides name and color.

Hm, I wasn't aware of that. Granted I haven't looked at the list in a year or two, but anyway, thanks for that information.

thats what i thought, and because i can get px12 toes alot cheaper and easier than FKS toes... im just looking at mouting these on my old invaders for a play around ski or do something funky on my GF's skis and i dont want to mount something that isnt safe cause shes just starting... so theoretically... i could get px12 toe piece with the same AFD as the fks and then this would work... and quite frankly... because they dont make bindings with this color scheme!
