Basically I'm super pissed off right now and I need to vent.

Don't EVER ever quit school to pursue a sport. Hopefully this means something coming from someone who did it themselves rather than a parent or something.

In grade 11 I quit school because I made national team. Seemed like a good idea at the time, I could do a few courses here and there by correspondence and so what if I was a year or two behind I was on the national team. Big fucking deal. So what happens when your national team bubble bursts and you find out it's the shittiest organization you've ever seen in your life??? Or that there's more corruption in it than you could ever imagine. And now there you are in a crap ass situation with no fucking education.

So even if you are smart enough to get out of that situation and back into school your a year or so behind and all your friends aren't nearly as cool as they used to be cuz they are a different group of people so you stop hanging out with your friends from school. Luckily I've got some really cool people that have been the best friends anyone could ask for, chris turpin is one of the biggest right now. I'm not adding that to sound all cool like I know the pros or whatever, I'm adding it so you guys know he's a super cool guy too. Anyway back to my point, Your then old and in highschool and it's time for you to be out of the house because you are a completely different person than your parents or parent in this case and you can't because you have to finish high school.

Then to top it off your parent will start to blame everything on you because you are a dick to them because your different now. And then they'll think your a nobody because you quit the national team to go be a 'skid freerider' and party and not go to the olympics and then somehow it gets turned around on you that the bills don't get paid because of you.

Moral of the story is, just finish highschool before pursuing anything else. I'm not a huge fan of education or anything but atleast do it cuz it's way more socially acceptable if you have your highschool education. And if you want to go to university, than by all means take a year off and then go.

Sorry for the emotional moment but I had to get it out sometime.

All will be fine and crap but it's just getting really old really quick.

Yeah I'm staying in HS even though I hate it. I get pretty good grades but nothing good enough to go to a good college like an Ivy league. My parents say my dream to become a heli-pilot and ski guide is crap. I want to drop out now but I know then its no good. I couldn't find work. Back to the point I want to enjoy my life on something I love. I've seen my parents, they don't really love thier jobs behind a desk. I just want to live my life to the fullest and get crap for it. Life is not about a college degree or a fancy title, its about enjoying it. Our society is screwed up.

ski bum, your a knowledgable man. But funny, I'm going to be a heli pilot too. You have to go to university for it. well you don't have to but it's way better if you do. And by the way, those guys make up to about a 100 grand a year. not a bad chunk o change at all

And yah, society does get this picture that a fancy title next to your name, but it means nothing without happiness. But you do need SOME money to live out yopur dreams, so stay in school.

yeah that is totally true man, or society is messed, now nearly everything relies on education and not experience, our genereation is trying to be made into the 'smarter' generation which leaves us very little room for error in our education. neways yeah theres no way im gonna sit through highschool and university and study my ass off only to find myself back in the same place, behind a damn desk.

A good friend will bail you out of jail, but your best friend will be the one sitting next to you saying 'That was fucking awesome!'

I almost said fuck college, but then relized that maybe 20 yrs down the line, i might wanna have a family, and might not wanna ski everyday. So now, im in college, studying my ass off so i can make a decent living. Im gonna be a elementary school teacher, and move outa PA to colorado or utah or something. Yea, sounds pussy, but what other job do you get 3 moths off in the summer and 2 weeks off in the winter. Not too many. I know a kid that has a engineering, he is living in utah now, skiis everyday and tests for avalanches. His parents are kinda pissed, but he doesn't care, he love it. Live your dreams, but think about the future

ya... i can't wait till I'm done higschool. 3 short months and I have no reason to stay at home with my mother, or in Ontario. In July I'm off to Whistler for bigger and better things.

I was concidering joining the air force eventually, but this 100 grand flying heli's you speak of.. sounds like a good idea, cept for the whole going to University thing - would that mean that I'd have to like, take oac's 'cause if so than fuck that noise.

no worries jon, just finish up school then move out. your parents are proud (I know I've listened to them brag about you and don't know how many vidéos they've shown me when you weren't around), probably just a bit over stressed right now, especially with your injury and all.

Cant you get your g.e.d. detective? It seems like your situation sucks, but eventually you will find a way to work things out. You are doing what I only dream of. I am moving away from my peeps next year to go to school and ski. They arent pleased but you gotta do what you gotta do right? Hopefully Ill get all the skiing out of me in those years at college, but Im thinking it will only feed the need, and I will spend much more time away from my parents, not only because of skiing but because of career choice. Why totally fuck up your quality of living to only increase someone elses (in this case your parents) by a little? Ski the fuck outta whistler for me, maybe Ill run into you this summer.

there are definatly courses that you can take to get your highschool degree. but highschool is gay i bet you learned alot more about people and life then you would ever learn in highschool. and just remember eveything happens for a reason, shit will work out.

I've thought about dropping out of school many times b4. I thought 'Hey, skip past all the meaningless bullshit and get a GED in 10 years.' Not that simple. One of my friends dropped out of high school to become a full time hiker and outdoorsman. Bad move. He blew his knee out BAD and will now have permanent limp. So what's left for him? 28, no diploma, physically impaired, and dirt poor. Even his last resort of joining the Army has gone to shit because of his knee. Anyway, when I think of it I think of my friend. I partially blame this on society, though. We glorify atheletes who drop out of school to become stars at this or that. We reward them by giving them huge amounts of money when we watch them on TV, buy their records, etc.. Someone has to break society out of the paradyme that rebelliousness is good and not finishing high school is not serious.

what sport did u do?

My life goals have significantly changed over the past year. Originally, when i was 4, i wanted to be a paleontologist. That changed into an accountant, then into a teacher, then back to an accoutant...then forensic accounting...and now, to a ski coach. I realized that i don't want to be indoors for the rest of my life and that you are what you do...and i ski.

Anyways, my parents aren't too fond of my decision but considering i made almost 12 grand during the winter months while still going to school and passing everything, i think it doesn't look too bad...that opinion may change once my money runs out and i am broke by summer...but we'll see.

Take It All

Hey don't blame society for your friend dropping out of high school and shit. I think he is at fault because the mountains and hiking will always be there no matter how long it takes to graduate.

Athletes aren't glorified just because they go from high school to the pros they are glorified based on how well they do at the pro level. You have to realize that pro sports aren't really sports anymore they are businesses. An agent that talks a kid into skipping college for a huge salary in the pros is making a business decision that means more money right away. If the kid isn't smart enough to go to college, pass classes without even going to them, having the best time of his life, and still going pro then screw him.

Where did you find it?

I don't know. I was too excited. We're in the Lesbian stronghold

school is important.... but then you have the other side of the coin. I am 23 years old. and I did the college thing before I started to ski full time. now I am old, and I gut hurt a lot more when I crash. 5 years ago I wanted to ski full time, and I could probably have done a lot beter with my skiing if I had... now I am 23, and I have college under my belt, and I am skiing full time. but by the time I will use my degree, it will be out of date, and yea, I will more than likely have to take some refresher courses and what not.... I wish I had not gone to college till I was done skiing. but I am very glad I got High school done. I think that if you are definitely going to go back when you are done skiing, then skiing after high school is the way to go.
