Mircosoft maybe retiring Windows

That sounds like its at least 10-15 years down the line maybe more. The whole new thing sounds crazzy

A long way off..there would be a very long transition period too..it simply wouldn't be possible to enforce the immediate purchase of Midori and retire Windows simultaneously, would surely have to be some legal/antitrust/anti-competitiveness implications

so basically you would own a machine that would be able to access the internet and all the software would be online?

kinda like an online version of http://portableapps.com/suite

its a good idea, basically your 'pc' will be online and you go to a terminal to access it. in a way all your stuff will be located on a server, when you login to the computer you are using, all your preferences and data is already there. it would be like making every computer 'your' computer.

it would only work for countries that have decent broadband though, I think operating systems as we know them currently will be around for a while yet, although there may be a shift toward some software running online (photoshop springs to mind as already having a version of its software online I think)

but say my power goes out and im on my laptop. due to the fact that everything is on my server online, my computer is now rendered useless.

yeah good point, it may be stored on an online server, but when you sign on the apps you are using are downloaded so you have a local version? if it was all online though I guess you would be a bit screwed.

it may not be a replacement for your laptop, not straight away anyway. it would probably start with specific applications, like business presentations, working while you're on the move etc. the idea will probably become more relevant when the use of iphones and blackberry type phones is more common and they become more powerful and probably also capable of faster data transfer speeds.

and I guess if you're using a laptop during a powercut you're on borrowed time until the power comes back on anyway haha my battery is shot, it only lasts 10 min without being pluged in now
