MIP at 11,000 feet

So I'll rant,

Last weekend me and a group of 5 other buddies drove out to Rocky Mtn National Park, and were planning an overnight hiking trip to thunder lake in the wildbasin area.

We were bright eyed and bushy tailed. We had a handle of 18 dollar of bourbon, and two phat joints. What a trip this was gonna be. A 7 mile hike, then another 1.5 miles to the continental divide at 12,000 feet! FUCK YEAH.

Upon reaching thunder lake we setup camp then booked it down to the lake. Me and my buddy flyfished for awhile, explored, checked out the boarded up rangers cabin, and once the rest of the group came down we burned one down. After the joint turned brown, the bourbon started flowing, god was it terrrrrible. Once we had had our fill and were ready to eat, we started walking back to the campsite. On the walk, granted I was really crossed, I say a middle aged guy at the door of the ranger cabin. As another man at roughly 10,000 feet, in hiking attire I thought nothing of it and give him a warm hello. He didn't respond.

I was at the front of the pack, and by the time the last guy of group walked by, handle in hand, he stopped him. Asked how old he was, and told him that he didn't appreciate the ruckus we had just made. Upon finding out we weren't of age he said he'd be up at our campsite shortly. We were freaked out, who is this guy.

Long story short, he comes to the campsite, makes us walk alll the way back down to his cabin where he detains us for about an hour. He wanted to give us all MIP's. Now, he finally reveals that he is a park ranger. Until then he was just another guy in the woods. He ran all our names and info, and suggested our punishment should be hiking out right now (roughly 9:30 at night, 7 miles mind you). We quickly denied. He told us he'd be back tomorrow with our tickets. So we went back to our site, moral extremely low.

Morning comes, and he ends up letting us go.

WHAT A FUCKING POWER TRIP. THIS GUY ABSOLUTELY KILLED THE VIBE. The reason we hiked for 4.5 hours that day is so we could enjoy a night without the bullshittery of society, and there at almost 11,000 feet, we were right in the thick of it.

Just from reading that it sounds like you and your friends are probably idiots. Not as much by what you described as the way you're talking.

"Yeah bro we got like hella crossed getting those phat joints brown and letting that bourbon flow"

I wasn't there but I wouldn't doubt you guys were being obnoxious. The ranger probably was tired of dealing with asshole kids who make a scene, and leave trash everywhere.

Next time, if you're underage, don't cause a scene, be extremely blatant about it. I mean you could have thrown it in plastic bottles(assuming it was glass) then it doesn't look like booze, and you're not going to smash it and break glass all over the trail. I guess then you wouldn't look as cool though walking around swigging your booze.

You weren't being that chill, the guy hassled you, he let you go for the night, said he'd see you in the morning(so that you wouldn't make a scene that night) and then let you go.

I don't see what the problem is here.

Lesson = don't be a goober

If you don't want to deal with park rangers then don't go to a park. The job of a ranger is to uphold the rules of the park as well as state and federal law I don't see what there is really to rant about. You got caught by someone who was simply doing their job. Be grateful he let you go and pick a better spot next time.

In order to enjoy Rocky Mtn National Park you required alcohol and drugs? Next time just stay home.

Also, alcohol is allowed only in campgrounds and picnic areas, regardless of your age. "Violation of laws in Rocky Mountain National Park are Federal offences and will land you in Federal Court NOT Colorado state or local court!" The ranger could have been much harder on you. I hope you sincerely thanked him for not sending you to federal court.http://www.rmnp.com/RMNP-Planning-FederalOffenses.HTML

For the three primary federal offenses, you are your douche friends broke two of them.

Sounds like the ranger did you a favor. Dude probably knew you would think he was an asshole either way but decided to be nice about it. He is almost certainly been instructed to give people like you a ticket but instead he decided to save you a lot of money and hassle and a mark from your criminal record. Glad you lucked out this time OP.

aright everyone who has responded to you sounds mad salty, but yea, he wasn't exactly wrong. be stoked you didn't get ticketed!

how hard is it not to disturb others at 11000 ft? seriously you couldn't bother to be more discreet?

Yeah, we're all nad salty bro. That's why we posted a thread complaining about how we could have gotten tickets for being dicks, but didn't.

So he let you off with a warning and thats considered power tripping? Lol. Quit being a fucking shithead and be respectful and you would have never even run into the guy

this is the worst thing I have read today. I wish you would have been taken to jail forever.

As pointed out ITT

>You can't just drink willy nilly in a NP

>It's really hard to be an asshat in nature, but it sounds like you guys were

>Hiking with a handle in hand, casually

>Underage AF

>You're mad you got LET OFF with JUST a warning

Can't see you winning this one, OP.

Thats the thing, you shouldn't have to worry about people way the fuck out there. And we weren't leaving trash all over

Park rangers have the responsibility to look after huge sections of park. It's their job to pay attention to whats going on in there and make sure people are safe. If you guys did something stupid and something happened, he'd have to deal with it.

Your bitter because you feel he should have left you alone, and maybe he could have, but there's no reason to take some steps to NOT be that guy in the future.

If you had the booze water bottles, and weren't anything else dumb you were doing, you probably would have been fine.

Maybe YOU weren't leaving trash all over but lots of kids/people in general don't respect other peoples property. Hell I just hiked to a nice fire tower in the ADK's last week and this cabin near the top had broken glass around it, shitty graffiti, and other signs of human abuse.

The people that are being obnoxious are the people that are going to attract attention, regardless of your intentions. Especially if there are few other people in the park.

And I still don't get why you're bitching. You didn't get a ticket. Some people die on mountains, and you got yelled at for blatantly drinking underage, didn't get a ticket, yet it's the end of the world.

fuck you op for complaining about getting out scott free. I have court tomorrow and impretty sure theyre gonna give me the electric chair

Sounds like that boarded up rangers cabin wasn't as abandoned as you thought.

So in the ADK's this weekend a man was ticketed simply for posting a photo of him and friends drinking on a summit. A group where people were all well above 21, not leaving trash all over, and all or almost all legitimate hikers.

Not saying I support that at all, just pointing out once again how ridiculous it is that you're crying about being underage, blatantly drinking from a liquor bottle that might have been glass, and probably being a bit rowdy, while walking by a ranger at his post.

Learn something for next time.

If you want to escape all the BS of society, stay far away from national parks. They have their scenery, but it comes with tons of rules and bullshit.

Next time, go camping in national forest. Try Muddy Pass out by Vail. The free campsites are so far apart from eachother, you could probably be shooting off guns and fireworks and nobody would hear anything. There are rules, just not really people to enforce them (can shoot guns in 98% of national forest, so the rules are pretty chill)

Park rangers are fucking losers- they tear down the smoke shacks at ski resorts under the facade of "policy" but the real reason they tear them down is because they are angry they dont have the iq necessary to design and build something like a smoke shack themselves...

damn, you must be fucking up hard if you get in trouble out in the wilderness. having a few beers and a doob or two isn't bad in a setting like that but wow, how did you guys manage to fuck up that?

It depends. The rest of your answer I'd agree, but if you really just want to escape you can do it in the national parks. The main part of nationals parks are the interstate, but you can still find those back roads in the middle of nowhere to get lost in if you want.

Many of them are pretty vast, and a lot of people don't really venture from the roads, and maybe a few of the major, short, accessible hikes.

If you're trying to shoot off fireworks I guess maybe not, but that's not really what I'm looking for when I want to go out in the wilderness. I would just do that at a house party.

it always bothers me when people complain about getting in trouble for doing something illegal. You knew the rules, you knew the consequences and you did it anyway. why wouldnt you get in trouble?
