Minnesota High School Hockey Player Paralyzed

Did not know the kid personally, but a popular phrase coming up from this has been "you don't have to know somebody to pray for them." But I did know the kid that delivered the blow that changed Jack's life forever. Read if you want. But just pray for the kid.

Sixteen-year-old Jack Jablonski underwent surgery Wednesday to repair spinal damage he suffered Friday in a hockey collision that left him unable to move his legs.

A post on the family's Facebook support page said the procedure went "very well" and that he was recovering in intensive care at Hennepin County Medical Center, but it remains unclear if he'll gain more bodily function. A statement from the hospital regarding the procedure, which fused together two fractured vertebrae in Jablonski's neck, is expected Thursday morning.

The sophomore at Benilde-St. Margaret's was injured in a junior varsity tournament game against Wayzata when he was checked from behind and crashed head-first into the boards. Lying on the ice, Jablonski told his father he couldn't feel anything, but he gained some movement in his shoulders and right arm after being placed in traction and a halo neck brace at HCMC.

In addition to fracturing the two vertebrae, his spinal cord was severed at the C5 level, Dr. Tina Slusher said Monday during a briefing at the hospital. In general, the nerves that control the neck, shoulder muscles and biceps are at or above that level, while nerves controlling forearm, hand and leg muscles are below that level.

On Monday, Slusher described the absence of further movement as "very worrisome," though she allowed for some hope based on Jablonski's youth, strength and other factors.

Jablonski and his family have received prayers and good wishes in the form of thousands of Twitter posts and messages on their Caringbridge and Facebook websites. The tragedy has evoked heart-felt responses from celebrities as varied as actor Steve Carell, Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder and Twins pitcher Carl Pavano.

Now a series of tangible honors are being planned. Benilde classmates are planning to wear white Thursday in honor of Jablonski. A pond hockey tournament on Lake Minnetonka also is being planned Jan. 14.

Benilde and Wayzata hockey players had planned to bear his jersey number, 13, on their uniforms at a varsity game in Plymouth Thursday night, but the game was called off late Wednesday. A decision to cancel the junior varsity rematch had already been made days earlier because "neither team was ready to play again," according to Benilde's website.

About 100 Benilde-St. Margaret's boys' hockey players and parents met at the school's chapel Wednesday afternoon. Coach Ken Pauly read a statement from Leslie Jablonski, Jack's mother.

Pauly said the "emotional meeting" made "everyone aware of the challenges ahead. Guys are not giving up hope for their friend but we're under no illusion about the long fight ahead."

really sucks hearing about stuff like this especially with stuff you grew up playing....seen many concussions from hit from behind but nothing this serious. its real sad that hes gonna be unable to play for the remainder of his life. hopefully he recovers well

That is the saddest thing in the world. Hate to hear about spinal injuries. =[ I would rather die than be paralyzed...

They just released a statement on his care site that says surgery to repair his vertebra was a success but that he'll never walk again. So sad.

He is getting an AMAZING amount of support, everyone in my school is wearing white today to honor him, and in schools across MN. Its truely amazing

put a hit on the fucker who thought he was being all tough and jacked up when he sent a dude flying into the boards after hitting him from behind. shit just shouldn't happen. hate hearing about kids getting severe, life-changing injuries that are completely preventable.

That's true but I heard that it was an accident and the guys that hit him feel absolutely terrible. It was two guys that hit him by the way

No shit they'd feel terrible. That is a horrible thing to happen to anybody. Will effect not only the kids life but also the lives of the kids that hit him. + vibes.

It's crazy how something so simple can change a lot of peoples lives forever.

they should feel fucking terrible, that kid will probably never be the same again. people that throw hits from behind are fucking wack.

The hit was actually clean, and I go to the school of the kids who hit him and they're taking it SO hard. He is personal friends with the kid and actually might be hitting hockey because of it. It's great to see all the support in MN for Jack, but I just wanted to put it out there that it's actually really hard on the other kid too, and could have happened to anyone really.

This article makes it sound like the hit was really bad. I go to Wayzata and know kids on the team as well as having a brother in hockey, and everyone says the hit was perfectly clean. Kids who were watching the game said it didn't even look bad until he fell.

And of course they feel terrible, like EricaMN said I know one of them is quitting. But it's not like you do something like this on purpose. I'm praying for both Jablonski and the Wayzata boys.

they usually are an accident and as said above it apparently was an accident. hits from behind and to the head will never be absent from the game because of how fast paced hockey is. ive even been hit from behind this season, and im in a non contact league. there arent many people in hockey that play to injure other players, alot of people are friends with almost everyone in the leagues they play in.

not the answer. my cousin was there when it happened and said the kid was bawling, and hes taking it really hard. it was an accident and now he has to live with that guilt of knowing he paralyzed someone.

A horribly unfortunate accident, but I hope the two players who hit him keep playing.

Their team could sew a white ribbon to their jerseys to honor Jack.
