Right mp3 players are alright, but minidiscs can do everything an mp3 player can do and more. Generally the quality of a minidisc is better, if you are recording from CD or DVD. You can record mp3's onto minidisc too, but with both mp3 players and minidisc players you've got to make sure you download good quality songs or it'l sound crap. Plus if you wanted to you can record from the radio on minidisc, or from other analogue and digital sources (cassette, video, vinyl, dvd, radio, computer, tv, anything with a sound output). yYou cannot do this with mp3 players (to my knowledge) as you can only transfer files from your computer to the player in mp3 format. Imagine a mini disc as a cassette, with perfect digital quality, compact size, able to record from any source imaginable and relatively cheap, with tonnes of feature. Go for minidisc i'd say. Plus the arguement about mechanical parts breaking is stupid, they'l only break if you drop it, and an mp3 player would break if you dropped it to.
