looking for the best way to digitize mini dv tapes, any of you guys have any tips? Capture cam? Mini DV deck + capture card? Lemme know whats worked for you!

been forever since i used miniDV but couldnt you just use the camera and find a converter from the camera's cord to USB?

OP hasnt responded yet, but if you're in a situation where you already have a ton of a footage you need digitized, just buy some shitty mini dv camera with a firewire output. Then you're going to have to find a solution to get firewire to usb or something, older computers had firewire 400/800 some even had the smaller version that is on dv cameras. You might be able to do this over usb from the camera, but not sure. FCP 7 would be perfect for this, no idea about other capturing software, old versions of premiere probably could do it as well.
That being said, if you're just looking to start filming, buy a different camera that records to SD cards in HD, you will thank yourself in the future.

Yeah I already have a lot of footage on MiniDV tapes and really love how the footy usually looks, my old transfer cam crapped out, and was really just seeing if anyone had a better way to do it, I guess firewire into premiere or fc7 is still the way to go. Was also interested in seeing if anyone had used a camcorders av outs with an external capture card as a way of digitizing footage because firewire has been moded out almost entirely and camcorder>firewire>firewire-thunderbolt>new computer can sometimes be a little iffy
