Mini DV tapes

i came across this website that said Mini DV tapes Camcorders will be discontinued in 2009 cause the companies have realized what they think the consumer wants and that is hard drive and companies may even stop producing the tapes them selved if this is true then start hoarding up tapes

dude, you can still buy hi-8 tapes. do you know anybody who's bought a new hi8 camera recently?
Sony just released 2 prosumer hdv cameras, and canon recently released the XLH1s and XLH1a. They're not going to stop selling cameras or tapes because there's still a huge market for them.

yeah def not that soon. too add to that^ list, new Pana HPX..full solid state.

im not down with hard drives but if everyone switches to P2 cards thatll be alright...

yeah tapes arent going anywhere...especially cuz consumers and prosumers can not afford or have no reason to have p2 cards. An 8 gig is 500 new, and thats 8 minutes of footage.

Most cameras will shoot to SD cards very soon. HMC-150 is already making a huge dent in the solid state camera market. You will never see P2 go consumer, wont happen. SD is where it's at until something newer, better, and cheaper comes along.

DV tapes obviously aren't the absolute best video format, but that doesn't mean that companies are going to stop producing them...

Definatly not the best way to store media but by far the cheapest. My XH A1 writes 30GB of data per tape. which each cost me around 3-4 bucks. The only issues is u cant let the camera run for over an hour doing a time lapse without switching tapes. and o yeah the super fun time i get to sit infront of my computer for hours uploading it all real time. But P2 cards are so expensive and you need to buy a bunch to get by. There are some good alternatives comming out for Mini DV cams with aftermarket steaty state recorders.

Not true at all, one 16gb does the job. Sure, i get 35mins of 720p30p, but i can also go back and delete shots. I did 3 full days of filming at hood and each day i never filled up a card AND were were shooting 60p which is like 17 mins on 16gb card.

I don't mind tapes, I kinda like having a hard copy.

But I'd drop tapes in a heartbeat if I could afford P2.

For event shooting, or filmmaking 35 minutes of space isn't going to cut it. This summer i shot a fight scene that ended up only being a few minutes long, and the raw footage filled 3 tapes.

I don't really film skiing a whole lot, but when I do I always shoot at least 17 minutes in a day. P2 is great, but it's ridiculously priced

One of my issues is that i will be filming in the ADK park this year and hiking in and staying in for days at a time i will leave with 3 or 4 tapes full of cllips i am also a pain about keeping all of my footage i cant tell you how many times i had a shot that was horrable but that out of focus shot or rediclously over exposed shot worked perfect in a section. and if i was only able to keep 16 min a day it would never work. I have a feeling in two years the price will be 10% of what is now
