Gravitational Force = 5.90 x 10^-39

The fact that the gravitational force is fantastically weaker than the strong nuclear force (15) by an unimaginable thirty-eight orders of magnitute is critical to the whole cosmic scheme and particularly to the existence of stable stars and planetary systems. if, for example, the gravitational force was a trillion times stronger, then the universe would be far smaller and its life history far shorter. An average star would have a mass a trillion times less than the sun and a life span of about one year - far too short a time for complex life to develop and flourish. On the other hand, if gravity had been less powerful, no stars or galaxies would ever have been formed. As Hawkings points out, the growth of the universe - so close to the border of collapse and external expansion that man has not yet been able to measure it - has been at just the proper rate to allow galaxies and stars to form.'

'in short, the laws of physics are supremely fit for life and the cosmos gives absolutely every appearance of having been specifically and optimally tailored to that end : to ensure the generation of stable stars and planetary systems, to ensure that these will be far enough apart to avoid gravitational interactions which would destabilize planetary orbits; to ensure that a nuclear furnace is generated in the interior of stars in which hydrogen will be converted into heavier elements essential for life (supernovae); to ensure that a proportion of stars undergo supernovae explosions to release the key elements into interstellar space; to ensure that galaxies last several times longer that the lifetime of an average star, for only then will there be time for the the atoms scattered by an earlier generation of supernovae within any one galaxy to be gathered into second-generation solar systems; to ensure that the distribution and frequency of supernovae will not be so frequent that planetary surfaces would be repeatedly bathed in lethal radiation but not so infrequent that there would be no heavier atoms manufactured and gathered onto the surface of newly formed planets; to ensure in the cosmo's vastness and in the trillions of its suns and their accompanying planetary systems a stage immense enough and a time long enough to make certain that the great evolutionary drama of life's becoming will inevitabely be manifest sometime, somewhere on an earthlike planet.'

i think i got the first part, if there was a trillion times as much gravity the whole solar system would be smaller and the sun would have a life span of a year making it impossibe for life to exist and if there was less gravity nothing would exist.?

Isn't the Gravitational force equation the same for all objects? Because if you drop two objects say a bowling ball and penny, they will fall at the same rate because the force is the same?

no, the gravitaltional consent applies to anything that has mass. Even your body has its own gravity, but as you can see by the number, its really really small.

..equations don't need variables to be manipulated. Anything with an equal sign is an equation.

b-wald , you're really missing the point.

there are units, and there is a relative force....but i'd have to copy another 2 pages of book.

Maybe i will in a day or 2, write some more fucked up shit

BASICALLY, this book is a huge scary compilation of science that strongly indicates that the entire universe was made for us (complex intelligent life) as a final goal of the entire cosmos. It is the closest thing to proof for god, and evolution, and the greater master plan.

The world was pre made for us. It is perfect.

We did not evolve to fit this planet, this planet was made for us to evolve on.

chew on that

B wald an order of magnitude is used to describe numbers that use powers ( i think) so say 10^3 (when you say it out loud its 10 to the power of 3) it means its 10 times 10 time 10 which is 1000. now 10^4 is 10 times 10 times 10 times 10 which is 10000. Do you understand how the use of the ^ is just a way of writing down a really big number. And to get to my point 10^3 is bigger than 10^4 by ONE order of magnitude. so 38 orders of magnitude is a number so vast it is inconprehensible.

I liked the paragragh alot and it really leaves you in awe at the shear improbability of it all. But i do believe that allthough what WE call life in our universe would be unsuitable in another universe with different values of the key forces that determin its physical properties. Whats to say life wouldnt exist in another universe, just in a different form with what WE are familiar with??

This argument is more philisophical rather than drawing on fact that can be proven.

By the way forces such as the strong nuclear force/ the weak nuclear force/ the gravitational constant and other are CONSTANT and absolute. if they varied even a little then out universe would be very different.

Just to add a further point what a find REALLY facinating is that the gravitational constant propergates to infinity i.e. everything that has a mass has an effect on everything else in the universe. BUT the strong force only acts for a VERY short distance. Whats the difference and why do they act so differently and why do they act differently is quite interesting.

Good thread ski_pimp keep it coiming.

This is exactly why its said that Theoretical Physicists and Mathematicians are more likely to be religious people than people that are Biologists and study the other natural sciences.

One thing I have to point our is that truly no one truly understands how hysics truly owkrd. Light is both a particle and a wave, thats a mind fuck. I highly doubt any of us truly coprhend whats being said in the above paragraphs. The gest we can get, but I ain't even going to be arrogant enoguh to sya I fully understand what steven hawkins is talking about.

well hey now, nice to see we have some minds opening up.....

no so much resistance...thats nice.

This book is proving that carbon based life forms ARE THE ONLY POSSIBLE LIFE FORMS.

In order to have life...everything that has happened to our solar system, planet, and universe, has to be duplicated EXACTLY as it has happened here, or life cannot evolve past basic single celled forms.

It is absolutely the biggest mindfuck there is to be had in the universe..and im caught up in it....

I haven't read the book about life, but we don't even know how big the universe is, and how other biolgical sytems could eveolve. I don't believe that story, yet, If you could post the title of the book thoug, I think it would be interesting to read

The smart man does not know everything, rather the smart man admits when he knows nothing.

actually, thats not true. if you read more, you will discover that we have an idea of the size of the universe, and we know exactly how life has to evolve

Gravitational force is different in every solar system, because it is caused by the largest orbital in the first place. But i have heard, that in some events, like a neutron star, that the gravitational force is negative.

If the life of the universe was put down on a calendar to specifically show how far earth has come along..the existence of humans is very short. It would start from the Big Bang, on the first second, of the first day of January on our 'Cosmos Calendar'. So during each second and month the Universe is changing and evolving. The Earth would be fully finished with its creation in the month of december. Life on planet Earth, till this year, 2004, would be measured as the last 20-30 seconds of the last minute of the last day in December, right before the new year. Humans have existed for a VERY VERY short time as you can see. At that ratio of seconds to time..each second would have to represent thousands of years I believe. I don't quite remember all of this, I saw it in a video on the cosmos.

Anyway, just thought I would help in all this mindfucking.

this doesnt have to do with gravity but if the earth was one mile further from the sun, certain parts of earth would freeze to death during their furthest position from the sun (winter) and if it was one mile closer parts of the earth closer to the sun would burn. also if the ozone was 1% overall stronger, wildfires would explode out all over the earth, if it was 1% less overall, most organisms would die of cancer

I've never been one much for book learnin', but why the thesis?

Why didn't you just state that some facts about the universe seem too necessary for life to be random? Either way, if u actually wrote your post, then good job!

I feel that everything could be random. I am not saying it is the likely scenario, i'm just saying that it could be. But, I have not done any kind of intense studying of this area of physics. I'll get back to you after after I've been able to test my particle accelerator I'm building in my basement.

life was able to evolve on earth cause of so many conicedences. If we didnt have a moon we wouldnt be here. Our moon was formed because another planet hit us at the right angle. We also have magnetic poles. An ozone layer. And were just the right distance from the sun.
