Mind Critiquing My 2012 Season Edit - "Get Fly"

I procrastinated all summer with my last seasons footage just sitting on my External Hard drive and finally found some time to put together a 2012 Season Edit. I wasn't too stoked going into the editing process as I barely had any footage due to 3 of my 5 riders having season ending injuries early in the year. After finishing with what footage I had (I literally used every last clip), I am actually pretty happy with how it came out. I was wondering if I could get a good critique on all facets of the edit

*Editing (most important to me)

*Filming (I know it could be better, something I plan on working on this winter)

*Color Correcting (Another thing I need to work on)

*Overall Vibe (Something I hoped to really nail with this edit)

Thanks! and of course, +K

I liked that quite a lot actually!

As for a critique, the editing itself was pretty good! I liked the intro a lot, although I feel like the film grain could have been left out, if you're going for a theme with the film grain/ older effect I think it would be better to have it consistent with the rest of the video. Also I did not like the titles at all. Keep the same titles for each rider, the mish mash of titles kind of took away from the video! The slow option at times was choppy but I think that had to do more with your filming (30fps for the most part?), and not the editing. Other than that though the cuts for the most part were timed well, there was not an excess of film burns or unneeded transitions, so that was good!

The filming was decent. Not great but still pretty good! It did get shaky sometimes, especially on the follow cams and even on some of the static shots, so thats something to work on. Invest in a glide cam if you haven't already? Also work a little more variety into your shots, different static angles, stuff like that! Filming can always be improved and its a fun thing to get better at and you have a really good foundation to base yourself on!

The colour correction was a little dull for me, I personally like more vibrant colours, but thats just me. If you are going for a desaturated look thats great, but crushing the blacks (just a little mind you) and bringing up the saturation a little can make a HUGE difference in the look of a video, and make the footage look much better!

Finally I thought the vibe of the video was great. I absolutely love that song and thought it went with the video quite well, all working together for a fun vibe!

Have a mad fun season filming and editing this year and hope to see some more stuff from you!

Thanks man! That's all super helpful.

I completely agree with a lot of what you said. I was scared to over saturate in color correcting but looking back, I definitely could have gone a little further (I usually go for an unsaturated look, but with the vibe in this video, I should have gone even more saturated).

I wanted to try the different title thing and kind of hoped it turned out a little better but I guess editing is all trial and error as I progress.

Thanks again man, awesome critique. 10/10

Editing was good. Out of everything, definitely the best partfilming was mediocre, a bit shaky as a whole but still not bad

color correction was week. Im not sure what you were going for, but as i see it, there are two different styles. One is the lower saturation, crushing blacks etc. The other is a gopro type video, high saturation bright colors and shiny overall..pick somewhere on one end of the spectrum, dont go in between (which you did here)

overall, vibe was good, great video

1:21-1:31 was awesome first of all.

Editing was done quite well from my POV, lined up with the song often. sound was used well(especially at 1:21)

Special effects(not editing) were done pretty well, but there was a lot in there that I didn't like, the film look isn't something I'm a fan of, but if you like it you may as well use it.

Filming is your biggest problem:

First off a lot of it is kinda shaky, what stabilization are you using?

Secondly you underexposed quite a lot, but nothing was too extreme in either over or under. Which is good.

Finally you need to work on framing a lot, I understand that you didn't have many clips, but some were from such a distance it was just ridiculous.

Color correcting wasn't the best, mainly because it altered so much throughout, you might want to try using a program/plugin where you can scrub through the timeline with a histogram, it'd be pretty benificial, or just use mbl on each clip. I wouldn't say the colours were undersaturated, but I'd have to see a comparison.

I'm not going to comment on the vibe, because I really just don't know, it's a bit of a bland song, but there was lots of nice things about the edit.

*EDITING (most important to me): I thought the editing was pretty exceptional, especially the intro (the shot changing to the piano roll). I liked the grainy texture at the beginning, but I thought you could have used that more often, like when you're showing the skier's name, just to have that as a recurring style. I especially liked when it showed one name and the name was swiped away when another skier came in front of it. You also changed the style of each name when they showed up; they were all great individually but I think you should have kept a consistent style. I thought you synchronized it pretty well with the music. _______________________________________________

*FILMING: The filming was kind of off to me. For example sometimes with the follow-cam, you would get up a bit too close after they landed and would show a picture of their torso only rather than having them in the full shot. I also wasn't a big fan of when you would pan out during a shot or toward the end of it, there were a few during the night shots. And it could've been a bit smoother. Also some shots were really far away.___________________________________________________

*Color Correcting: I thought your color correction was good for the day shots, but the night shots were really unsaturated which I felt didn't go well with the overall vibe of the edit. Maybe shots could be a bit brighter at some points like when someone was sliding an s-rail the color was dull. __[______________________________________________________

*Overall Vibe: I really liked the overall vibe to the edit, it was a really warm vibe, but some of the shots didn't really coincide with that. ,

Overall, it was a great edit. Underscores are to separate the segments. I hate mobile.

Again, Thank you. This has been a super helpful critique.

I do agree that I need to work a lot on my filming. Whats the best way to film night shots in which I can color correct to give a saturated look? When I tried to saturate, it started to get very noisy.

I film with a glidecam, but I obviously need some work with it, that's this years goal.

+K for everyone

This was sweet, because you kept that vibe throughout with the sound. Really liked the use of sound and a couple shots (like when he stomps the front 4, classy) As you know, some of the shots were a little shaky...it happens. Not sure about the reverse shot of you skiing away from the people at the rail, didn't fit entirely. There are things to work on, as most people have stated pretty clearly. Sounds like you know what works and what can be improved so good on you for getting after it. Sparknotes for what worked and didnt:

-keep a consistent title (while some were really cool, gotta keep it consistent)

-make sure every shot has a specific purpose

-love every minute of what you do and keep making edits like this

with love,

G.K.
