Mike Douglas is a Fine Announcer

I don't know exactly what percentage of people on here tell Mike Douglas to shut up, and claim that he's a terrible announcer, but seriously, give him a break.

He's really good at it. It's not bloody easy to call all of those tricks (especially in the pipe) in succession, especially when you have to get both the spin amount, axis, and grab correct. On top of that, he;s able to give extra tidbits of information and commentary on good and sketchy style. Not only does he do all this, but he also translates it to the rest of the world that our sport is being showcased to. Just because he says "switch, that's backwards," doesn't mean he's an idiot.

What really sparked this thread is, when I was watching the TV rip of slopestyle, Colby did a pretzel, and to the untrained eye it looks like a devilishly simple and unimpressive trick, but Douglas went back and emphasized truly how difficult they are (to some... don't come in here claiming OMGZORZ pretzels i do thems in mai sleep) for the rest of the population.

I don't think there's anyone out there who can do what he's doing better, and I'm thoroughly convinced that none of the little claimers in here could even come close.

If you're still not convinced, you should definitely give this a read:

No he's actually pretty bad. He sounds so dumb "this jump is only 65ft but they are easily going 110!" not. I could do a better job blindfolded.

I think Luke Van Valin would be a fine addition to Mike Douglas and Uncle E, but Mike D did a pretty good job this year.

you also have to think that they hire announcers to exaggerate things and make it seem really exciting. so he has to say shit like that or else he wouldnt have the job and there would just another retard in place of him

Your opinion is welcome, and valid... but don't you think you could back it up a little more? Personally I think he's great, if I were sitting up in that booth I'd be all, "wow that was a sick.. uhh.. switch rodeo 720... or was it bio?" and by that time the skier would have already gone off the next two features...

i guess he does a good thing for the general public, but to those of us who know whats going on he sounds like a fool.

i completely agree with you. it would be really hard to be an announcer because a) you have to keep talking and keep it interesting so the people watching don't get bored and b) have to know A LOT of information about the skiers, the tricks, etc etc. i think mike d does a great job with what espn gives him

Its annoyin for us talented skiers who know whats goin on... but to those common folk who dont ski or know the world we live in (skiing world) they have no fucking clue on what a sw 12 octograb is... and he's preachin to them... not us... gettin this sport more mainstream

d any one else notice how they said they lost a shoe when they lost a ski? idk if they were trying to be funny but it was stupid

he deff did awesome, and he even clarifies some of his comments so that the people who dont know this sport can understand, well done

I've got noting but respect for Mike D, and he does a fine job of announcing. Fuck when I try to explain our skiing people who don't know anything about it I come off as an idiot, he has to do it to dorito eating rockstar drinking fatties who watch the 'espen' who just want a dose of "extreme" every now an then. Plus the guy layed down so much in the foundation of modern skiing that that should keep people from hating on him all together.

I agree he does a pretty good job for how hard it is. So many differnt tricks now and he has to make it so normal people understand what he is saying.

that was last year. not this year.

The other announcers wouldn't say if the trick was corked, bio, etc. Douglas could recognize that, along with the difference between the rodeo and the flat which most announcers can't do. I thought he did a fine job this year, much better than last year for sure. He has to do this for the general population, too which I couldn't do for the life of me.

mike douglas rocks my sox

when i was wathcing the slopstyle and pipe i didnt really hear anything wrong with his commentating. He might have not got a few tricks right but it would be very difficult to nail all those tricks back to back. And some people are right that he isnt catering to the people who actually know the sport because hes tyring to get more people to know skiing and know what things are

everything considered, and yes, considering i hate his commentating...my biggest gripe is how he never calls out unnatty tricks

He did a great job, the only thing that really pissed me off was when he referred to bio spins and even some corked spins as "misty".

i think there are numerous people who could have done a better job. like any one of the people there were there for qualifying that didnt make it. sammy carlson would have been amazing and hilarious. douglas didnt know the difference between misty and corked. he didnt know what an underflip over overflip were off the cannon box. he sometimes actually got the spin amounts wrong. even i could tell the difference between these things.

You're an idiot.

plus, the X-games aren't made for people like us. The marketing and announcing is for total nubs, and average viewers. I think Douglas kills it with announcing. He's pretty on point and knows what tricks are what, doesn't mess up his words, and is just generally good. Van Valin is good too...

i would love to see everyone on here announce a live skiing event with knowledge and trying to keep the average public interested at the same time.
he does a good job at it, hes lively and he knows wut hes talking about.
he does a fine job.
That shits pretty hard. Takes some guts to, to know a million people are listening to your voice

yea so much better then the past 3 years.

Maybe he read the commentaires on his annoucing on here and decided to step it up.

God job douglas, you've stepped up big time.

if he wasn't skiing in the competition...

i think he did a good job considering it is a large event viewed by people not understanding the skiing terminology, like he kept saying "coming in switch, or backwards"

plus hes a nasty skier

nah, he definitely did talk about spinning both ways and diffrent grabs too, and style, overall he did a good job, espn fucked it up by not airing enough skiing, once again

i think he did a great job with announcing and explaining what all the tricks were to those who werent firmiliar with skiing....great job keep it up....i think he has that perfect recognizable voice for it.....i guess he skis too, i would love to see some footage of him and what he can do...anyone got any?

all announcers say something stupid once in awhile, probably more so in less developed "extreme" spots...that sal malsomethingerother described a snowmobile jump as a "couch flying through the air" i could not help but laugh

anyone watch the big air?

he was the only one who knew anything and he did a kickass job.

The other dudes were like "..... uhh.... that was awesome... I cant do that..."

Please keep in mind that it's not his primary occupation and as such he doesn't have much practice, this combined with the fact that he has to talk almost constantly and that you're all being extremely critical gives a pretty good reason, in my mind, for his mistakes.

yeah go download the hit list off of itunes, and war for $1.99. he's in both. and in most early freeski movies.

his best segment is in propaganda, tr to check that one out

but i have to admit he is just alright at announcing. there are tons of people who could recognize tricks faster and better than him
