I think the problem here is one of terminology. See, you guys assume that particular terminology for a trick is correct because it's generally accepted. Not so.

Definitions are determined according to a prescribed standard. For example, in the English language, if you want to know what something means, there's a hierarchy - you can look it up on dictionary.com, but if dictionary.com says one thing and the Oxford English Dictionary says something different, the OED is generally considered authoritative and prevails over other texts.

Similarly, in skiing, you might think what people generally call a trick determines the correct name for that trick. Generally, fair enough. However, Mike Douglas fucking invented this sport and you can all go eat a dick if you want to criticize his calls because if he says it's called a change up it's called a goddamned change up. Mike Douglas is the OED of skiing. If he says X and you say Y on the subject of skiing, X is correct, because he is the Godfather and you are quite literally nobody.

Here endeth the lesson.

P.S. - if you ride primarily park and are under 25 years old, I can confidently generalize that without Mike Douglas you'd be a snowboarder.
 
I agree with the changeup thing but measures of degrees have been around since math and geometry was invented in fucking mesopotamia so if I see a 270 degree rotation and mike douglas calls it a 450 degree rotation it doesn't make him right.

maybe mike douglas should go eat pythoragas' dick. mike douglas may have invented some things, but he did not invent rotations.
 
well, created is a bit extreme. it discredits all the skiers today that have pushed as well.

either way, i can't believe how fed up people get over announcers.

it would be hilarious however, to have Steve Stepp as the announce.r

to me free skiing is an ever-chaning stream of progression. What free skiing meant a year ago has changed to what it means today. It encompasses the new progression earned every year, every month, every day, etc.

anyone, its pretty dumb to argue about.
 
Douglas is a legend and all that.. But freestyle skiing would still exist today with or without him. You guys are giving one person way too much credit for our sport, and you have absolutely no evidence to support it.
 
good to know but no one was saying that hes not a good skier, were saying hes a shitty announcer. yeah hes a great skier and all but he should stick to skiing and freeski tv or whatever he does cause hes not really killin it in the announcers booth. calling a k fed a front swap blind 2 or something like that is fine cause not everyone goes by the names but messing up spin names and skier names and more just means he doesnt know enough about the current state of park skiing to announce the biggest contest of the year
 
Shut up all of you who are hating on Mike Douglas.He is a legend. Sure, he gets a few calls wrong, but so would you or any other announcer. Seriously, why aren't you pissed at Uncle E? That's the real idiot in the booth. But LVV would not be bad taking Uncle E's place for sure, Uncle E would be good at hyping the crowd instead.
 
Well I can tell you, I'm not ashamed of myself, not at all. If you're getting paid to be at the highest echelon of action sports commentary and you can't even manage to understand the fundamental name differences between separate tricks, then that is either a reflection of abysmal work ethic, or a lack of care in what he does -maybe due to complacency brought on by being an icon in the same sport he calls.

I mark by comparison, I observe the accuracy and quality of Douglas' work relative to that of Dave Duncan, LVV and so on.

In the context I was speaking in, I stand by both those statements. He is an embarrassment to skiing with his cliché comments and his moments of utter confusion as to what is happening before him. This makes him and idiot because he should know better.
 
Perhaps he might be an embarrasment in the announcing world... but he is not, and i highly doubt ever will be, an embarassment to skiers. On that note, your and idiot....
