Might not ski park again

Had an incident hit close to home, and it's making me wonder if it's worth it to ski the way we do.

My on-hill friend's brother died just a few days ago, on the 23rd. His name was Aaron Shoemaker, and if I recall correctly, he was a team manager for Nitro Snowboards or something.

He was in Italy for school as well as snowboarding, and he fell doing a backside Rodeo 7 on a 45' jump. The impact of the fall on his chest, at the wrong moment caused him to go into cardiac arrest.

Now, I didn't know Aaron well personally. only met him and his other brother, Jesse on a few occassions, and their skills never ceased to amaze me. I do hoever know his youngest brother, Colin well. I ski with Colin often during the winter, and he is such a good kid, awesome boarder as well.

With this happening to someone that I have met, and being somewhat close to home, I am questioning whether or not it's worth it. Aaron was incredibly experienced and had talent to boot. And the fact that he died doing a trick he has done countless times before, on a jump that isn't enormous by any standards, really makes me wonder.

Freak accident. But saying you aren't going into the park again because of that is like me saying I'm not going outside anymore bacause some kid got struck by lightning.

Thing is though, he was well within his limits. He wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary for himself whatsoever.

I'll prolly continue skiing, but it really makes you realize how fragile life is though.

think about how many people do snowboarding and skiing and then think of how many die from it every year. the chances are very slim.

ski ski ski ski ski ski ski ski ski ski.......

Sorry about your friend, I lost 7 friends. Every one of their death is a lesson to me, so I learn from it and try not to make the same mistake.

Have you people ever considered on wearing protective helmet and clothes, especially spine protector when skiing? Wearing them will increase your chance on surviving the impact without serious injuries. I bet you dont, except for helmet.

That's ashame. You should just do what you enjoy doing. If you like park, and still would enjoy riding it, then do it. If the incident has caused you to not have fun in the park anymore, they stay out of it. But, you can't go through life worried about something like that happening. You probably have a better chance of getting killed in a car accident than you do skiing, but you still drive dont you? If you enjoy skiing park, then stick with it.

the kid died doing what he loved and you should to if you ever die. Just becuz he passed on to a better place doesnt mean it has to stop you in your tracks. We all morne for your friend but shit becuz this happened ski harder for him do what he did just do it bigger and better. keep it real homie hope what we all say helps

yea if you think about how many people go off a jump doing a trick and die,

and then then think about how many people die from it?

there have probably been only 2 people i have EVER heard of jumping within their abilities and there have been millions and millions of jumps done. very slim chance of dying. definately slimmer than riding in a car or something

sorry to hear that. if i were you i would just keep sking the park, be ski with caution.

that sucks i'm sorry to hear it. the way i see it is, i would rather go out skiing, doing somthing i love than going out crossing the road. Life is sooooo short we should all live it to the fullest.

Keep skiing

yeah man everyone is right keep doing what you love and do it for him cuz you know he or his brothers would want anyone to stop because of this. Also dedicate your first run of next season to him

as much as stuff like this really hurts, i don't think that it should stop you. ski to have fun and just enjoy it while you can. I know that there is a risk involved everytime you hit a jump and you friend was just really unlucky i guess it what it comes down too, so my advice is keep on skiing

i've been steezed out since cub scouts

Yeah, I know that's gotta be rough, but definitely don't stop doing what you love to do, I have a feeling your friend wouldn't want that.

i think thats such a stupid phrase 'At least he died doing what he loved' well im sure he would much rather not die doign something he hated than dying doing something he enjoyed to do it doesnt change the fact that a person died.

God is an American.

i think most of us know someone that has died skiing. You know, most people die outside of the park than inside. Trees are more dangerous than tables, if you ask me.

Its winter, the birds have all flown south, all but one. One little bird that waited too long. As it flew to catch it's buddies it got icicles on its wings and fell to the ground. The bird then saw a nice looking branch at the top of a nearby tree and it said to a nearby cow, 'I want to reach that top branch but I don’t have then energy to fly up, can you help?' The cow said, 'Here, eat some of my poop it'll fuel you to climb up the tree.' The little bird said, 'Thanks!' and had some of the cow poop. The bird flew up to the first branch of the tree and rested, then the next day flew to the next branch, until finally the bird reached the top branch. Then the farmer came out with a shotgun...

The moral of the story is, bullshit may get you to the top, but it wont keep you there.

wanna die skiing

when I am 80 and the docter tells me I am going to die I am goning to go helli skiing and Jump off a record size cliff. and die in an adrenilen(SP) rush

your it

you were born free and free you shall remain

Keep doing what you love. Derek Finn almost died doing some urban rail last year when he fell and hurt his intestines. If he ate anything, he would die. If he hadn't gone to the hospital, he might have died.

You can die doing anything. Most deaths seem preventable, but arent. You can believe what you want, but I believe everything happens for a reason. You don't go and do things that hurts you. ie walking infront of a car, taking drugs, or doing crazy things. But skiing isn't one of those things. Its a lifestyle, its something worth doing. Don't give it up man. take another direction if it feels right. But skiing is something life long.

------------

it's sad to hear that, but it shouldnt stop you from skiing. i understand where you are coming from, but those things happen every day. tons of people get killed in car accidents but that doesnt stop others from driving. if everyone stopped doing dangerous things in this world, everyone would just be sitting at home on their couch all day, hoping that a tree wont fall through the roof. crazy things can happen, but you have to take risks. so keep on skiing, just dont do really crazy stuff. you can still ski with common sense without having to quit park :)

i love riding park, i know its dangerous but i cant think of any other way i would rather die than die doing what i love. you only live once

just ski man. i know what you are feeling i had the closest friend of mine die in an avalanche and i just stopped skiing and went travelling now i regret taking that year off of the snow despite how much fun i did have when travelling. now it is on once again

AMA-RIP

just talk it easy, and be prepared for the worst, if you dont, wear a helmet, then you can still rip kinda. i would not recomend stopping one of ur favorite things becuase of a freak accident, but its good to be aware of it

or every time u hit a jump, u could say a prayer

...RUN FOR COVER PRODUCTIONS...

wow dude, your a little bitch. There are risks in everything we do, but you can't just let a little fear stop you from doing what you love.

look at the chances you have at getting in a car accident, but look how many people drive, look at the chance of terroism attacks on planes, people still fly, sure it can happen but it's such a slim risk that it's worth taking.

Yo man thats sick bad luck, but don't let that stop you, rip a line through the park or bust out some crazy shit in the backcountry for him and keep on keepin on

That's horrible, but like someone else said, it had to have been triggered by some pre-existing condition, even if it was undiagnosed because it was barely noticeable. But Jeff Anderson, an awesome, awesome, guy, died by falling when he was riding down a stairway handrail on his ass. You can't stop what you're doing just because of crazy accidents like that. Besides, if you're really worried that something will happen to you, it usually won't.

think about it dude....you leave the park, your gonna end up skiing something even more dangerous...at least the park is a controlled atmosphere....if your that freaked out, wear a helmet, but beyond that...its outta your control

Yeah man park is definetly dangerious. I've never gotten too badly hurt skiing until this year skiing park a lot. Yeah park is controlled but there is still plenty of room for human error. I'd much rather take my chances doing ballzy stuff in powder landings.
