Don't know if any of you have a Benz. But I was thinking about getting one. I know its more expensive to fix because its a Mercedes but I heard its rediculous to fix one. Is this false?

no for real, theyre expensive as shit, you can only have them worked on at MB dealers, they have computers in them that is reset by MB mechanics when you get an oil change, when your lease is up they do like a 60 pt inspection, and if the computer hasnt been documented by an MB mechanic, your fucked
 
What if i check with the person that owned it before if the computer or wharever has been turned off? Then would it be cheaper to fix?
 
computer cant be turned off by anyone, you need a physical key and a code, they wont even touch it if it has been turned off though without there authorization
 
you are forgetting to say that that includes a full tune up, tires rotated, plugs, oil filter checked/changed, oil changed (likely with synthetic which is expensive) and so on.
 
yea no prob, but on a positive note, if you have one and take care of it, it will be your favorite car ever, my dad had 3 over 9 years, i loved them, theyre fast, comfy, reliable, and handle awesome. if you have the $ to spend go for it, but if you want a easy to maintain car you can work on anywhere, its not for you.

if you buy new they have oil packages which covers your oil changes for your lease for $1800 i think, but i'd skip on a used one cause no one works on them and if they do you can never take it back to MB
 
what these kids are neglecting to mention is it's affordable if you get a brand new one and get the 2-3 year service warranty with it
but if you get one that already has 100,000 miles on it i hope you have a lot of patience and a fat wallet. i had a 97 audi a4 and that motherfucker was in the shop two or three times a year and it almost always cost a grand to get it back out again...that's just how german cars are, unless you take it to a dealership it usually takes people longer to fix them and it's harder for them to get parts
honestly you'd be saving money in the long run if you just shelled out up front for a new one. ive got a BMW right now and it's kicking ass...hopefully i wont pass 60k miles til i get out of law school, then im trading that fucker back in and getting an S4.
 
im sure there are certified mechanics at stand alone garages which would be cheaper.

the only mercedes that i have ever liked is the CLS.
 
If you have to ask, you can't afford it.

If you look at most all luxury vehicles you will hear the same thing. BMW, Infiniti, Mercedes, Lexus. None of them are cheap to own.

On top of that, if you just redirected say $8k of that money you would have spent on the luxury car in to a value growth mutual fund. It would be worth a lot more in 20 years than you car will.

if you think your broke now, getting a benz will multiply your problems by 4. but it will also multiply your baller status by 4, so pretty much even tradeout.
 
benz arent that nice, they are wwaaayyy too dependant on the cars computer/electronics,

we used to have one, and one day while we were driving it the whole computer system in the car shut down, the steering locked up, the engine shut off, and we coasted into a ditch.

the thing was in the shop seriously once a month with some bullshit problem, and it was always like 2-3 grand to fix (it was still brand new, so the warranty covered all the problems) at one point we did something in the general area of lemon lawing the car, and bought a volvo s60R instead....

dont buy a benz, really
 
my friends parents just bought them one for 5grand. 1997 i forget the model its fucking dope. in suchhh good condition. it was at an auction and it was so cheap because it was seized from a drug dealer, who happened to leave his 50cent and young jeezy albums in the car! haha
 
In the area of this one, none. All the way on the other side on town, maybe two more. Bottom line is one dealership will not charge $1000 to change oil. Thats more like a Lambo or something.
 
there are 5 in the LP, thats why they rip you off, but included on that $1000, they rotate the tires, change plugs, and run diagnostics
 
My uncle has a SL55 and a GLK 350. He likes them, but he can afford them. When he was getting a spring tune-up on the SL55 one of the mechanics drove into one of the jacks (don't know how it happened) and cracked the front bumper. The dealership had to order a new bumper from Germany because it's got all kinds of sensors and radar and crap in it, paint it and put it on. Cost them a ridiculous amount of money and he had to wait like a month and a half to get his car back.
 
thats the only way they can get people to buy there cars, just like lexus

i have a 93 E190 and i love it. its pretty quick and i hardly ever need it fixed, its not too expensive cause i havent needed anything major done.

 
dude its a toyota with a different badge, USA is the only country in the world where Lexus exists, everywhere else its a toyota, they suck
 
They have them in Canada and Puerto Rico also. How does a Toyota suck? I bet if your father sold Toyota's instead of benz you would be saying that benz sucks. Toyota is the number one selling car in the country and has three cars in the top ten. And that includes trucks. So thats pretty dang good in my book.
 
I drive my dad's sometimes. It's such a nice car to drive, it feels heavy but not slow or sluggish, rather stuck to the road. His has never been in the shop yet as far as I know, but It's gotta be a year old at most.
 
...About that...no, my father could have gone to lexus/toyota if he wanted to but he chose Benz because of there quality and name, toyota can build a transmission, i will give them that, but the metals on those cars are so thin and weak that not only do the get covered in rust after 5 years, but they are extremely weak. if you look at the switches and handles in a toyota/lexus,you will notice that they are verbatim to the ones Benz was using 12 years ago.

Im not saying a Lexus/Toyota is not a good car, because it is, it just does not have the technology and quality a Benz has, therefore should not be compared to a Benz. Its like comparing an Armada AR6 to an Fischer RC4, theyre totally different, they are for different types of people
 
I worked briefly in an independent garage that only worked on Mercedes, BMW and Volvo (Yeah I know, Volvo doesn't really fit in the same price range as the other two...). I didn't work on the cars but I handled the bills for all the work and the numbers were ugly. After working there, there isn't a chance I'd buy one no matter how much money I had. It's not worth the repair bill. It never ceased to amaze me how dumb-founded the customers were at how much it cost to fix their babies. They shoulda thought about the repairs BEFORE they bought the car. I also got to drive some of the cars and they were amazing but I'm still not buying one in my lifetime.
 
My parents have had a 98 Benz wagon for maybe 9 years now and just handed it down to me when I got my license. Car is so pimp, has 160,000 miles on it but still drives amazingly. Its not too expensive to own, usually we have to spend maybe 200-300 a year which isn't too bad. I don't know what these people are talking about that you can only get shit done at the dealership, we never go to them, there are plenty of other shops that are Benz certified that will do work for much cheaper. Unless you're talking about just for the lease then that makes sense.

If you have a little extra cash, definitely go for it. All my spoiled friends have driven it and just can't compare how smooth driving it is as a whole, compared to their new hondas/jeeps/toyotas, its just a very pleasant car to drive.

thread creator... are you looking at brand new, newish used, or old used? I have an 86 300SD which is my daily driver, has 200k miles on it, runs like a fucking champ, and all i do is change the glowplugs and oil, and tranny fluid and it goes. I also own a 91 190E 2.6 16 Valve. put maybe 200 miles on it since I bought it, but the thing is amazing, but extremely difficult to work on. my dad owns a 2001 S600, had it since new, and loves it, rarely has problems, over 120k on it. look around where you live, if there are a bunch of independent mechanics, talk to some of htem, and ask their opinions of what you should look into, and whats better on maintenance and such. any benz from the 90s after they stopped the w126 body style is gonna be shit. so either go pre-90s or 2000s.
 
Trading your BMW for an S4?

Why would you ever? Get an M3, or if you want something a little more affordable get a 335(x)i. They are faster than the S4 (0-60 in 4.8 (yes that's right) seconds) which run 0-60 in the low 5's

 
s4s are fucking money traps. if you are going for an audi either ball hard and get an rs4 since youre dumping the money anyway, or just stick with another company
