Meningitis and college...

so i go to school in NY, and im assuming that most colleges are like mine: they require a meningitis shot before you come.

for those who dont know, i believe meningitis is the swelling of one of the protective layers around your brain and spinal cord, correct me if im wrong

so anyway, we're all required, but last week, the school sends out an email that a girl is in the hospital with possible meningitis...then some other people saw them fumagating her room, and rumor has come around that her bf and possibly her roomate have it as well

well as of last night...she died. it only took a week. i find this kind of disturbing cause all kinds of people are gettin freaked out cause its spread pretty easily and we are still in session

anyone's thoughts on this would be appreciated. i dont think the school is doin the right thing by keeping us here, but i've never heard of any other cases like this, since its usually realllllly rare apparently
 
is meningitis the 2 part shot or is the hepititis shot... the one where you need to go back like 6 months later?
 
I know of a kid who had it, and a teamate of mine and a bunch of other friends were all with this kid and swimming with him while he had it, and none of them got it. But ya, I'd pay extra attention to your body, and don't be afraid to go see the doctors if you feel weird.
 
yeah meningitis is the swelling of the meninges, which is a thin layer of tissue surrounding your brain and spinal cord. meningitis is a very serious ailment that, obviously, can be deadly. make sure you guys keep an eye on yourselves and your friends. don't share drinks or anything like that. and most importantly, make sure you are up to date with your vaccinations.
 
wow, crazy man, they should just let you out for thanksgiving break early until they get everything sorted out.... i was just up at Marist on saturday too. that really sucks, though if you've had your shot, does that mean you're fine?
 
Hepititis you go back 6 months later. i'm not sure if you also go back for meningitis tho.

i someone in my family had meningitis, she didn't die.. but she lost all her hearing
 
yeah my best friends girl just all up and died one day a few years back, she wasnt even sick for more than 2 days, it happened so fast it was just crazy
 
I HAD MENINGITIS!! i was in the hospital for a week then couldnt go back to school for 3 weeks more...it was crazy. i actually had viral meningitis which is worse because theres no stuff to fight the bacteria cuz its viral. my brain was swelled and shit. worse headache you could imagine! i coulda died. they said that like 60% of the people with it that survive end up retarded from the brain swelling
