To cut to the chase, there is a volcanic island off the northern tip of Africa that is very unstable. Now I bet most of you are thinking 'Big fucking deal'. Well if it all collapses at once, causing trillions of tonnes of rock to fall into the ocean, then a mega-tsunami would be formed. Mega-tsunamis caused by landslides such as this one would have waves that would reach heights of around half a kilometre high. This is much higher than any building in the world just so you get a mental image. This mega-tsunami would be powerful enough to race across the Atlantic Ocean and destroy everything on the Atlantic seaboard up to 16 kms inland. This includes South America.

Now scientists cannot predict when this will happen, it could be 2 years or 200 years. It may not even happen at all depending on how this island collapses. Anyways, just a little heads up for everyone on the East. I hope it doesn't happen during any of your lifetimes.

I was watching that on discovery channel too, quite interesting. Also, it has happened before so you people can't simply doubt the existance of the possibility. In Alaska, there was a gigantic landslide and a wave up to 500 feet tall rocked a bay. It wasnt a populated area, but there were a couple of observeres who managed to live. Now what in the hell would you do if you saw a 500 foot wave coming towards you?

They have ways of detecting when tsunamis are coming on the west coast, they should probably get one on the east coast too or most major cities are gonna have significant death tolls.

This theory was actually recently proven to be highly unlikely. Anyways the odds of another catastrophic tsunami in our lifetimes is miniscule to none. If you want to watch a cool program about asteroids and tsunamis and the risks there, download the program called 'Space' there are like 6 episodes hosted by that guy from Jurrassic Park. Basically they could completely not see an asteroid till it hit the earth...It could also cause a nuclear winter, tsunamis, global fires, mass extinctions. Anyways doomsday theories are a dime a dozen.

These islands are the Canary Islands (i wonder if none of u know they exist). They are actually Spain. It's a paradise over there. You can even ski on the top of the volcanoe. It's like 4000 meters high.

i heard about that on the discovery channel they had a thing about mega tsunamis and how they are formed. they listed likely places that they could orginate from and a couple of cases of mini ones with walls of water 450 feet high. while its possible its very unlikely to aver happen because you would need a catastrophiic event for one to happen.

Hey I saw this on the discovery channel too. Best not worry yourselves; if it happens and you live within 50 miles of the east coast, you will die. It cant be stopped. If you hear about a mega tsunami coming to town, though, you better run your asses off. It happened in Alaska.

the skiing out eat sucks anyways...also there is a GINORMOUS volcano underneath yellowstone and if it erupted everything on earth would die. it would shoot out enough ask to form another continent. the worst part is, if you did survive the snow conditions everywhere would be bad :(

when a tsunami occurs in the ocean, one plate rises against another and the water on the higher plate rushes off it to the lower plate and forms the tsunami that travels for 1000km's around the world becasue it was based on the ocean floor...makes perfect sense to me

this mega tsunmai seems to be formed in sallow water...not 4 km deep, and somehow gets to be 100x the size...i dont get the logic behind that. i can see it wearing down much faster then a regular tsunami

Well dirtydrummer next time they're are warnings of a tsunami coming get out to the location. Go to the beach, most likely it'll be pretty empty so you won't have a problem finding a spot to set up shop. Then get your little beach towel out, put the sun tan lotion on, set up the umbrella and check it out dude.
