Medical mystery, help me out!

So I know everyone's going to say go see a real doctor. But I'm in between health insurance right now (that means no coverage at this time) so I'm trying to put it off as long as possible.

I woke up this morning with quite possibly the worst pain I've ever experienced in my life. Worse than breaking my shoulder, and worse than getting my finger cut off. This whole pain shenanigans is located in my left arm.

Symptoms:

Sharp/pulling pain in my forearm especially, sometimes shoots up to my shoulder

I can't stretch out my fingers at all, they have zero strength in them. And if I do manage to stretch them/make a fist, it sends the worst pain ever into my forearm

I can't pick up anything or hold anything with my left hand

My hand/wrist is swollen

I was really hoping I just slept on it wrong, but it hasn't gotten any better as the day progressed even with ice, advil, and rest.

So now I'm just hoping it's a pulled muscle, but I've never experienced that before so I'm not sure if that is what I have.

Can anyone help me out?! I just want to know what happened to my arm!

You just woke up and it hurt? what were you doing the night before? did you do anything stenous(sp) or drink/eat/take anything that could of like messed up your arm?

its probably something to do with your muscle? im not sure but i would say go see a friend thats a doctor or that knows something about that

rest it, maybe you slept on it awkward, if pain still persists, set up an appointment with the ns doctor,

hmmmm...

did you get real drunk recently and perhaps broke something then?

or... do you get nightmares/night-terrors often?

when i was about 12 years old, i woke up with a broken right thumb and it was missing its thumb-nail. I guess i was having realllllly bad night terrors and was trying to beat the shit out of something (i don't know) but i was just hitting my bedframe as hard as i could, while asleep. super weird. i didn't wake up in between either, i must have stopped whatever it was i was battling in the dream and laid back down, still sleeping. my thumb and bed were both quite blood-stained and it scared the shit out of me. nothing like this has happened since, (knock on wood)

i would say that it sounds like a partially torn muscle. check for indentations/bumps at the site on your arm with the most pain.

if you absolutely cannot go to a doctor then stop attempting to move it at all and as soon as possible go to a doctor.

I did go rock climbing yesterday, but I do that like once a week and I was on super easy routes. I definitely know it wasn't from that, I would've felt it right away or last night.

And another symptom that I forgot to add was sometimes my hand/fingers go numb. Well they do that kinda a lot, so that sucks.

Is it spasming? It could just be something weird you did to your nerves and/or wrist. But that does sound kind of weird.

But that does sound kind of weird.

Your health care system is really weird. I could not imagine to pay for all those Hospital visits. I even get money if I break something - but if I am honest, that is a little bit weird, if I think about it.

Sorry, to digress from the original problem ... I wish you luck, that it gets better soon!

this may sound really dumb. but try hitting your arm or pushing/pulling the muscle in directions, could be some kind of pinched or fucked up nerve. i remember in 8th grade i was running, all of a sudden my back gave out and i dropped to the ground. couldn't move for 10 mins, slowly got up. 30 mins later i could hardly stand up straight or do anything really, my friend hit me really hard in the back, boom, i could function again, within an hour, i was back to 100% normality. pinched nerve

sounds kinda like something my dad had, he had a pinched nerve. he had sharp pain (sometimes kept him from gettin any sleep)lose of movement and strength.he had to have an operation because he had a bone spur on his back that pinched the nerves to his arm. they said that if it was untreated he could have lost all movement in his arm.

now im not saying to get all worried cause it might not be the same thing at all but you should go to a doctor and get that shit checked out, might not be something real good.

I actually "pinched" my ulnar nerve (basically what people call your 'funny bone') during field hockey earlier this year. In the other arm. Let me tell you, having that constant hit your funny bone feeling fucking sucks. Anyways.

It felt somewhat the same, I had the whole numbness in the hand thing. But it was more so a pinching feeling/really really sharp pain only when I would use it a certain way.

I went to the doctor and they told me that when I got hit with the ball, it made the muscles swell up and that was what was pinching the nerve. I had to be in a sling for a couple days to let the swelling go down and then I would be fine, which is what happened.

So you guys saying it being a pinched nerve could be so true, but I'm not quite sure since one, there was no trauma to make this happen, two, isn't your body supposed to be paralyzed while you're sleeping? Ahh!

to the creator i dont know a ton medically but it does sound like a pinched nerve to me and you can actually move during your sleep...your essentially paralyzed during REM sleep. that's why sometimes especially in bad dreams you try to run and get that awful lead feet feeling. but during the other phases you can move...which explains sleep walking etc.

sounds like you pinched a nerve somehow while you were sleeping. it hurts a lot and will hurt for at least a month

well for a heart attack the pain would be located more in the left shoulder and it wouldn't be numb and she would feel a lot of pain and tightness in her chest as well...

it's not like you're a corpse all night long, everyone tosses and turns a bit, maybe your arm fell off the bed/ got caught in an awkward angle

is it still hurting?

I had the same thing happen from tennis. Sharp pains, no movement, alot of pain, swelling. There are many things to do that can help. Its different for everyone, and recovering time is different, you say you climb once a week, well even with easy routes there is still muscle movement, but you know that. Many people get into weird sleep positions, sometimes leaving most of your own body weight on one spot, causing the muscle to freak out, for it is recovering and if you cut off the blood or slow down and cause pain and swelling for hours or sometimes days. ANYWAYS a few good ways to fix this to cut back from the use of that body part. Take a couple blood thinners, although not a lot, one every few hours. Ice and rest basically is all that you need. Also try and sleep on the other side, back, or stomach. The swelling should die down with in a day or two. If not it would be a good idea to get some blood work done just to be safe.

if u cut ur finger fairly recently it may have something to do with that. when i cut the tendons in my finger a year ago i still get pains n shit in my hand and wrist. but doesnt sound as hard core as urs.

sounds a lot like torticollis, which is a muscle spasm but I dont know if you can get that anywhere other than your neck. I tends to go away if you leave it for a few days though.
