hey, just curious how easy they are to get, and what would help me get one and shit... looking to ride out at tahoe but i dont have that much money, do have a sony vx2000 tho so maybe just that and a media production card would allow me this privedlege??

Soooo, your basically hoping that a huge coporation will give you free services because you are a 17 year old with a 10 year old camera??

congrats, Im 20 and a filmer too, now why the hell would anyone give you a free lift ticket because of that fact?

because mountains give media passes out quite often, if you take some shots for them or get their logo in the shot... im not looking for your condolences... wow were the same age and we both like skiing and film tho, maybe were like long lost bros

I mean thats probably it, except only one of us got a brain. Ive never heard of a mountain saying yeah stranger, you can have a free lift ticket as long as you put out a sick gnar youtube video with a 2 second shot of our logo at the end of it.

If anyone ever gets a free pass to film, they likely have close ties with the mountain. Not some rando.

just because you havent heard of it doesnt mean that it isnt true... ive gotten media passes before (not to ski mountains, and it was for photography) - once to a concert (working for my school) and once to a baseball game (working fora newspaper). if you have a legitimate reason to be there or are working for somebody, its worth a shot. I would contact the owner of the mountain. It is likley that if you dont have a real reason to be there, you wont get one, but try to play yourself up and be professional

thank you nick, for being respectful and not claiming that i dont have a brain and for actually knowing what your talking about... I will get in contact with them before hand, thanks for the advice

And his reason is..? that he will put their logo in his youtube video? right.

Its not hard to get a media pass, hell I got one for the dew tour. He wants free lift tickets. BIG difference.

To assume you are not filming someone would mean I had a huge over judgement in your intelligence.

tho you already implied i didnt have a brain, very contradictor... i thought the media and arts forum was supposed to be a more respectful environment, guess its still ns though some im expecting a bit too much

Yep that proves my original statement in which you dont have a brain.

Respectful? That only comes to those who deserve it, those who come here asking if mountains will give you free lift tickets because you bought a VHS camcorder with a handle, do not deserve my utmost respect.

Im sorry but do you understand what you are asking? Your looking for a hand out with very little benfits to the mountains in which you are asking.

**I am aware of the difference between VHS and Mini-DV. No need for you to attempt to explain the difference.

it isnt unheard of at all. the kid hating is coming off as pretty dweebish. id say find the correct person to email and write a very formal type deal with some past edits etc, focusing on what you will personally do for the mountain, as opposed to the actual free ticket part. just look at it through the eyes of the person of receiving the email really.

Find the person in there marketing department. Hopefully you have a website or a place where they can find past work. Tell them why you are going and who you are going with. Offer your raw footage or a short edit they can use for there website for trade in x amount of passes. It works sometimes and it is in both parties interest. The issue is making sure the people at the mountain trust that you do good work so a website or past work is key.

"im hoping to get free services because of the camera and production company"
from this statement (that the OP made) it seems as if him getting a media pass would benefit both him and the mountain (by having their mountain be in a clip put out by his production company, as he put it).

See you guys are giving this guy too much credit.. You are also arguing points that he has not said, only wish for him to of said.

He did not say that he will give them clips, he said he would put their logo in his youtube video. This is not looked as promotion for the mountain, since more than likely, there are already filmers out there doing this sort of "promotion" that have bought passes. What he is implying is that he feels he is intitled to hand outs since he has a camera with a handle and has a "filming company" (lol dont we all..)

Also further proof he is getting too much credit, he has no videos on his page, no vimeo (might just not upload to NS, similar to me) probably just got the camera, and this is what he lists as his website http://www.skitoga.com

Now Im all for going about this the right way, as many others have stated, but you a lacking credentials and a reason for deserving this hand out. But go ahead, email the guy in charge, or are you waiting for us to find his email for you?

you are basing this off of ASSUMPTIONS. you have no idea what his work is like man, and to be honest, it really doesnt matter. The avenue that he will need to go through to get a media pass is the same regardless, so what is the point of assuming that he is a nobody-filmer? He never implied that he feels as if he is entitled to handouts or anything. For all you know, this guy is the next big thing in the ski industry. I mean, odds are that he is probably not, but do you know that? he may be good at what he does and initiating a dialogue with the company is the way that he would be able to make things work (if it ends up working out) with them.
Basically what I am trying to say is that you have no idea about this persons skills. You can either bash him, help him, or not post. If you are going to bash him, just don't post. Bashing him wont help him but will make you look like an ass. Furthermore, if he does end up getting a media pass and you are wrong, you will have have dug yourself into a hole. If you want to help, then do it in a supportive way.

You are also assuming that he is legitimate in his endeavors..

BUT moral of this thread.

media pass ≠ free lift tickets

he is not looking for a media pass, he is looking for free lift

tickets, he hopes to achieve this under the guise of a media pass. Good luck, but just don't ask any real mountains for the handout, they wont give them. And even if they do this time, they sure as hell wont after your go through..

despite is a tool, all he does it hate on people an thinks he knows everything in the video/photo world.
wake up and smell the coffee your photography is horrible.
thats all

haha I always like your comments, they always make me giggle.. but you missed the OP, he said drop it, he has seen the enlightenment.

Ha, you thought you taught me something hilarious kid... i realized i didn't want to bother because you are a close minded individual and any words or thoughts of mine would not really get through to you so i shouldnt waste my time... and yea us hoodrats from the 518 are funny... and if you keep up your negative nancy outlook on life, im sure you'll not have much luck with the ladies later in life, they dont really like that, just as its prolly going for you know while your inj your youth... ha im drunk this is where i talk shit... Bassnectar show in a bit and i dont giv ea fuck

Well, this thread got pretty messy pretty quickly. That's a bummer.

Not trying to be disrespectful to Despite here, but most of what he said isn't going to help you, as I'm sure you've figured out. Craig (CS FIlms), pretty much nailed it on the head however. Like he already stated; yes this is very possible. You just need to handle yourself professionally and find the correct person to contact. Finding the correct person to contact is usually as simple as going on the mountain's website and going to their media room (or equivalent, and finding their marketing director or someone in a similar position) and shoot them an email. Be professional, show them an example of your past work and explain why you want to go to the mountain, and what you can do for them in return for letting you come up and shoot. This is often either an edit that they have rights to put on their website, or simply to just give them your footage (if they have someone in house who does editing, not all that common actually).

Contrary to what Despite said, this is a very common thing and it's the big resorts, with larger marketing budgets, that are more likely to have you. For the Gold Project, I can usually get 4 tickets where ever I want to go, just make sure you give them about a week's notice because setting up the vouchers sometimes takes a while.

However, don't try to pull this card if you're not actually there to shoot and produce something that the resort will benefit from. If you've actually got people to shoot where you're going, and you're actually going to put time into shooting, then definitely go for it. If not, be respectful to the mountain and get a ticket by other means.

Hopefully that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.
