Before the mcdicks sponsored event, down home events like the triple challenge had a purse for 5,000$ for first place? and the X games is a 10,000 grand prize, and i think that the US open as well as the VT open have pretty hefty purses.... it doesnt seem to me that there is a shortage of prize money, and pros are still heading to these events in flocks, and this season we saw more rookies then any year, from schiller and rainville, balsen and soldberg, bibby, reed and countless others are coming out WITHOUT the aid of mcdonalds.

What bothers me about it is that McDonalds are aligning themselves with a sport full of healthy people in order to make that link in your mind between health and mcdonalds when in fact if you eat load of mcdonalds you aint going to stay healthy for long.

And companys like Armada wil never be able to out do Mcdonalds cash... so in order to have a skiing world with Armada and and other progressive companies, they need all the support they can get. Or once we grow to a larger scale, companies like mcdonalds will move in and ruin what we and comapnies like armada helped get us there, just cause they see an advertiement threw our sport.

The money was used to align Mcds with as someone pointed out.. an extremely strong symbol of healthy living.

Most of the people watching the contest could have cared less about Iannick's sex changes.. or 270 disasters.. they cared that JT was going to be there handing out some oversized cheques.. it was a crowd of teenage girls.

with too much makeup.. and not enough clothes.

As an event it was well organized, yes. it went very smoothly, but it REEKED of smarmy commercialization... Yes, Rex could use the money, so he get dressed as a clown and slides a rail..

but think of that statement alone..

The dude with the armada icon, just spelled out simply, how mcdonalds sponsoring events will NOT benefit our sport, but rather bully the other roots companies like armada and PONIVEROUS out of the game, because they cant compete. it is next to impossible now to keep skiing 'core' and not trying to make it a big thing. to all you 'corporation haters' out there...all hypocrites. like (i think it was kami) said that look at what you are wearing and where you eat most of the time, where you buy your clothes...this large corporations you hate so much own most of these places now. Hell, Tim Hortins isnt even Canadian owned! its owned by wendy's now. These large corporations are the people who run the world. they can pressure governments into bending the rules for them n e wayz. these are the people who influence the rest of the world...also, i am pretty sure that the 5 largest corporations in the worlds (in terms of revenues) are all U.S based...

First let me clarify, I am NOT anti corporate.

I am NOT anti big business,

I am however PRO skiing.

Being pro skiing for me means that when someone asks my opinion on what I think is good for this sport I will offer it honestly.

And I honestly feel that though it was great for Iannick and some of my peeps to make some dough the other night, it was not good for skiing in general.

I don't expect to stop corporate involvement in my life or my sport, I do however have and hold opinions on whether the effects are positive or not.

In this case I think the short term benefit (cash to a select group of INVITED atheletes) was far outweighed by the long term negative effects.

I might have felt differently had McDs sponsored an OPEN rail jam.

This being a pro invite only event solidified the rational that the only benefit this really generated was providing leverage to MCds target market campaign to young america.

They brand associated themselves with icons of the youth such as ski/board pros.. and young pop singers like JT.

You can all come here and say whatever you like about the benefit of money in the sport.. that is undeniable, but if there is to be an actual benefit, the money has to head back to the sport.

in this case it heads away.

i do think its cool that people are starting to recognize our sport.. on the other hand i dont like the idea of having companys that have nothing to do with skiing try to promote it.. thats when posers come in.... our sport should only be sponsored by skiing companys

i cant believe you all think that skateboarder and snowboarders are rich because of corporations.only the best of the best and most popular people will benefit in getting more money.all the people i see who are pro in skating are pretty much broke, they get there money from sales on the products with there name on it. So you have to be extremely popular to get any good amount of money in.IT will be the same in skiing, people like tanner will get more money while the people who also deserve it might not get anything because they are not as well known. Big corporations also backstab you more.
