McCain just suspended his campaign

And wants to postpone the debate because of the financial crisis.

What do you guys think of this political move today? Good move, bad move? Tough to say. I think it's going to bounce back on him because I think a LOT of people have been looking forward to the debate friday. Should be interesting to watch how this unfolds towards the end of this week, as well as how the polls react.

"

I am calling on the President to convene a meeting with the leadership

from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is

time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.

We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must

meet until this crisis is resolved.I am directing my campaign to work

with the Obama campaign and the commission on presidential debates to

delay Friday night's debate until we have taken action to address this

crisis."

I sorta agree with him... he has his priorities straight.

haha wow. I thought it was going to be Bush and Cheney resigning.. but still smart. Does it seem like he's just making it so HE himself is avoided?

Oh wow... I think that's a huge mistake. Everyone's going to paint it (perhaps rightly so) that he's afraid of debating a junior senator on foreign policy which is supposed to be his specialty.

The question everyone should be asking themselves is, why is he doing this? Because the answer is going to depend on how he thinks this can benefit his campaign for president, as that is the ONLY reason a candidate for president does ANYTHING major. How does this benefit his chances?

I think it's because he wants the focus off of him. Other than his age what has been the topic lately? Palin.

He's doing it because it shows that he wants to cross partisan lines for the sake of the country. He's trying to show that he cares more about the country than the presidential race...remember "country first".

it's obviously political strategy, but it's good political strategy. People will respect the fact that he doesn't want to spend 3 million a week on his campaign ads when the economy is in the narrow part of the shitter.

But everyone with a brain knows that that's not true, that the race comes first. If you honestly think that getting elected isn't far and away his number one priority right now, you're incredibly naive. Everything McCain does until election day is calculated to get him votes. So why do this? How will this gain him any votes?

obviously that's what i just said.

that he's TRYING to come off a certain way, to GET HIM votes, and that its POLITICAL STRATEGY, and it will gain him votes because people who don't think it's political strategy will think he's honorable and has his head in the right place....sheesh

isn't that what every politician banks on? Even the media banks on that.

Obama rose in the polls the past week or so, and the reasoning behind it (according to the news/several sources), was the economy. That people saw John Mccain flip-flip on his opinion when it came to the bailouts. At one point he said he was against it, which was a statement that didn't fare well. Polls have shown that Obama has the lead amongst voters who say their number one concern is the economy. Well, he's got to win those people who were on the fence back. Show them that he's got the upper hand when it comes to economic policy, and that he's the one who is ready to do something about it.

People aren't necessarily smart, but give them enough credit to see through cheap political theatre... see for reference, "gas tax holiday". Also, it doesn't really help you to give your opponent ammunition, for instance, being able to say "John McCain thinks you're stupid and naive". Do people really want to vote for someone who thinks the electorate is stupid and naive?

If you want to change the numbers on the economy, give people an economic plan that they think makes sense. Of course, that won't overrule decades of de-regulation platforms, but trying to scam people with these kinds of tactics won't either, so...

i agree with everyone who says he wants the spot light off him. the election is 40 days away... its crunch time and he just wans to buy as much time as hbe can to get more votes.

the bail out plain and all that jazz is never gona work thats why the fed have been cutting interests rate for the past year trying to revitalize the economy and all that did was lower the dollar's value and accomplist nothing all they wana do is be a knight in shinning armor on a white hours they need to look at the future, cut out the federal reserve, get out of a war, necular power and what not, have the fed stop fucking saving investment branches like fanny may and freddy mack, 4 things we could do to fix the economy, suspending ur campaign mccain will do nothing

here's what I say, in light of the current financial situation this week, McCain has sunk and Obama has risen in nearly every poll, the McCain campaign recognizes this and knows that an economics debate is going to be sort of a make or break deal for them, I don't care if you agree with McCain's economic plans or Obama's the point is that it's been evident that people are moving over to the Obama camp when the economy is in the spotlight so McCain is going to run back to the senate and attempt to take credit for whatever happens in congress. Whether it is successful or not we will not really know before election day so it doesn't really even matter, what matters is how this "country first" stunt appeals to the American people now, and during the debates. We'll see!

im sure that was nor his train of thought. even though it could very well be a political strategy, it could help the economy. it doesn't have to be either a political strategy OR a well thought out move to help the economy, it can be both. i dont think he is trying to fake that he puts his country first by doing this, he is proving it to skeptical voters.

"The regional spokesman for John McCain in Colorado accidentally sent

the campaign’s internal talking points on the candidate’s plans to

suspend his campaign to its entire Colorado media list, instead of a

list of key volunteers, Wednesday afternoon."

"Told by a reporter that the e-mail had been sent to him

and others in the media, Kise said, “F*ck, tell me I didn’t send it to

the wrong list.” Kise said the talking points were meant for McCain volunteers."

Apparently, now that McCain has learned that the friday presidential debate is still going to go ahead, he's trying to get them to postpone the VICE PRESIDENTIAL debate:

First of all i HIGHLY doubt this has anything to do with the financial crisis, it has to do with the fact that McCain has seen hes losing points, and wants time to regroup.

However obama had a damn good response when he said that as president you need to be able to do more than one thing at once.

As for Mccain trying to be bipartisan its a load of bull. right before he announced he was suspending the campaign, obama asked if they wanted to release some sort of joint statement on the bailout. Mccains people said sure, then 15 mins later turned around and announced they were suspending the campaign. If he was TRULY trying to cross party lines, he would have told obama in the first place.

I agree with JD.

Mccain is trying to avoid this shit, all he is doing is avoiding issues and trying to hide from the long black dick of Obama's campaign, before he gets fucked (hard) by it in November.

EVERYBODY! Obama initiated this MUTUAL hold on the campaign:

The Obama campaign said Obama had called McCain around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday to propose that they issue a joint statement in support of a package to help fix the economy as soon as possible. McCain called back six hours later and agreed to the idea of the statement, the Obama campaign said. McCain's statement was issued to the media a few minutes later.

Its just the liberal media wanted to make it look like McCain is chickening out. And if you all don't agree that this is a more important issue..

i think it looks good but he's clearly using this to help his campaign and i think most americans will be more pissed off about the short term and not being able to see the debate than about the financial crisis, i think it will hinder his campaign

fuck the banks in their greed they bought debt. They did this thinking they could screw these people out of thier money. they got fucked and now we are trying to save them with a blank check?! Mcain and obama should be screaming against this. they are both gutless.

Mccain wouldn't do this if it wasn't absolutely needed and im sure it has been looked at from all angels and viewed as the best choice

what? they wanted to issue a mutual statement. Mccain said yeah, then bailed. hes just scared that his ratings are dropping. and hell yeah this is an important issue but as obama said as president you need to be able to do more than one thing at once

hahah. did you guys see that daily show episode where they showed cause he's a war hero it creates a force field around him and all the political attacks are bouncing off

regardless of the financial meltdown or whatever else is going on, we still have to elect a new president very soon- frighteningly soon. tthe debate is super important. this is no time for a serious candidate to suspend their campaign. weak sauce on mr. mccain's part

that damned liberal media! they are so wiley they even tricked you into jumping the gun on calling them out!

"It's my belief that this is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who in approximately 40 days will be responsible for dealing with this mess," Obama said.

another interesting question. mccain may be suspending his campaign. now, where is palin. is she not gonna be his right hand woman, should he get elected? so shouldnt she be running the campaign right now in his absence? but oh... shes not... innnnnteresting

i was under the impression the citizens of illinois and arizona, elected obama and mccain, to be in washington DC as "senators" and not traveling around the globe while trying to reach the next rung on the political ladder?

but don't worry all the members of congress are just like you and me. story.

40 days would be election day. obama knows he still has to wait until for inauguration day, right?

interestingly, senator joe lieberman has praised mccain's move and criticized obama for remaining on campaign trail. hopefully party lines continue to get thrown the fuck out in order to solve this mess.

anyone who says that mccain is afraid of the debate is an idiot. obama cant speak for shit without a teleprompter. im pretty sure mccain will kill obama in any debate.

^Would that be the same Senator Joe Lieberman who was thrown out of the Democratic party in a primary after insisting the US invade Iran, endorsed McCain months ago and spoke at the Republican convention? Yeah that's incredibly surprising that he'd criticize Obama and back McCain, I really didn't see that one coming.

If anyone watched Letterman tonight, he spent literally 3/4 of the show talking about this and the words "You don't just suspend your campaign!" were said about 20 times. The whole show was pretty funny.

The best part about this is that McCain will only be "working on the legislation" to the extent that it serves as a news item on which to continue his not-really-suspended campaign, the rest of his time will be spent continuing to plan the last month before the election. Even today after his "I need to get to JFK, get out of New York and get back to Washington" spiel, he makes a stop at CBS to get his nose powdered and chat with Katie Couric. Way to get down to business there J rock.
