May Day - Five Day Weekend of Partying

Walpurgis Night, as the English Wikipedia translates it to, is a day of celebration on the 1st of May in many European countries. In Germany, Walpurgisnacht - in Sweden, Valborgsmässoafton, in Finland - Vappu!

This year, Vappu falls on Tuesday, leading to many, many Finns taking the day off on both the preceding Thursday and Monday, making a hell of a five day weekend for absurd Spring celebration. Some people take it to the slopes for absolute blasts of skiing and partying, such as Pyhä May Day, while others focus on it's traditional and modern meaning - celebrating Finnish labour and students.

To kids, it's a day of joy, sort of like a carneval in many cities around Finland, with helium balloons, confetti, masks, songs and all sorts of treats waiting to be devoured! For adults... it's a day of joy, as well. Champagne flows on April 31st, on May Day's Eve. The streets are crowded with people enjoying life, dressed in all sorts of costumes, the shining sun (fingers crossed) and of course, the fricking day off for boozing it up!

Some of the traditional favorite treats are mead (with raisins) and funnel cake.

Everyone who has graduated from our equivalent of High School, a.k.a. passed the Finnish Matriculation Examination receives one of these hats. And old saying goes "A clean cap is a sign of boredom", meaning that the dirtier your hat, the more fun you've had on all May Day celebrations during your life - even wiping off vomit with it, everything goes!

On May Day, everyone, and I mean everyone who has one dons it with pride, gusto or or at least carries it around just for the fuck of it - it's Vappu after all. In Helsinki, we crown our beloved Statue of Manta with a large hat, 'Ylioppilaslakki' in Finnish.

That's when the real fun begins. It's also a day when most University students don their overalls, colored with whatever branch of science they are studying, protecting them from the unavoidable spills and possible throw-up from themselves or other participants.

The day after in many cities consists of enduring a probably hellish hangover in parks, but at least in good company.

A nice Vappu brunch seals the deal for everyone.

So, if you ever have the chance to visit Finland or any other country celebrating this during May Day, you will have a blast. I'm already so goddamn excited, even if it's a week in advance...

HYVÄÄ VAPPUA KAIKILLE!

Some happy memories from Vappu 2010 (I was sick last year), with my orange hat going around:

Since I was about 15, I've been almost always sick during Vappu, so the past few years, disregarding 2011, that I've been able to take part as a booze-guzzling adult... yeah, it's pretty awesome.

"I heard it would be awesome, but it was fuckin' ridiculous!"

-Kyle, Thompson Rivers, BC

"Do you ever actually sleep in Finland!?"

-Mimie, Orleans, France

"Mikko, you fucking crazy fuck you!"

-Xavi, Barcelona, Spain

But in any case, the latest stats are that roughly 7000 - 10 000 graduate every year. The rate is declining every year in the favor of applied science schools, though.

I really can't speak for other cities than Helsinki and Vantaa, but yeah, it seems to be a big deal all over the country! In Sweden, one of the greatest Vappu celecbrations is in Uppsala, too bad I opted to fly home that I time, I heard it was amazing as well, though not as concentrated as in Helsinki!

It feels cool too, still havnet decided on th outfit though but trying hard, maybe dye my hair green or some shit, either way, let us drink for health!

Today I rest, I'm getting too old for this shit.

But tomorrow...

ANGRY BIRDS BALLOONS

ANGRY BIRDS BALLOONS EVERYWHERE

They're pretty much sold out everywhere. I wanna pop one with a champagne cork.

Send me your hat, I'll take a nice steamy post-chipotle dump all over it and send it back. You'll be seen as a party god wearing your freshly defecated upon hat.

Sweden is like this too. A lot of people I know has been partying since friday night, and haven't really stopped yet. I'm not entirely sure of the origins behind the festivities, just another party-weekend I guess. Personally, I've been skiing and working these days, so no partying here.

This weekend definitely was not suited for skiing in Southern Finland, such great weather all around. Do you know if people in Sweden also use their high school graduation caps during Walborgs?

My friend got it from Thailand three years ago, along with an amazing Big Lebowski trucker. No brand I think, just some cool and cheap hat from a corner stand.
