Matchstick Speaks about TBC & MSP

Here is my response to an email I recieved at work about the teaser and also the TBC alleged situation...

Chase-

Thank you for writing directly to the source so we can respond to you and the truth doesn't get distorted by an internet chat community. Our graphics to the teaser intro were outsourced to a friend in Canada. If this person went to this tutorial or happens to be the guy who created the tutorial we are not sure, it is the graphics to a teaser we threw together in a day. We like the way the graphics looked so we used them. The real issue here is the flat out lies and rumors started on newschoolers. We would like to be involved with the newschool community because we respect the kids and the community that is there, however we cant visit this site and respond to every question or comment posted by a user because when we do it will either be deleted or we don't have the time to respond to continous lies on this site. We are in this industry because we love the sport and the people within. If you look at the original thread it was stated that the ski industry is full of rumors and this very well could be one of them. Its obviosly a complete rumor and it will be cleared up now. There was never such a meeting, as far as we now Gary at HH was planning to sponsor the new TBC movie and Henrik and Kris decided to do a Jon Olson movie instead. The only comments we have had on TBC was that everyone in this office loved the film and thought it was the most creative ski film out last year. And to clarify other said rumors Kris Ostness did not work for MSP this year, although we respect his work and feel he is one of the best ski cinematograhers in the business. Scott Gaffney posted a response on newschoolers and it was immediatley deleted by someone at newschoolers. We have had lots of positive emails and support from the industry about these threads that keep getting deleted by Newschoolers. I wish you post this on newschoolers.com as will I, but I can guarentee you these will be deleted as were all previous MSP responses. Again we respect you for coming directly to us with your questions, we would rather spend our time skiing and filming than responding to all the lies on NS. Skiing is all about fun, lets keep it that way.

Cheers

Kevin

its amazing that one internet site full of shit talking kids can change the way companies do their business. weve influenced ninthward and matchstick to change this is sick.

ummm... to mods/admins... who the fuck deletes responses from MSP... I have not heard of anything like that, so who is doing it?

next you're going to tell us that steve winter never really left that message on bermans voicemail. bs.

NS is a force to be reckoned with. I think our community has far more influence than any other form of media in the ski industry. Just look at the amount of members and the amount of people that log on to NS even in the off season. Its sick that we `the people`are able to have an influence. power by numbers in its truest form. i think we have enough smart people here to be able to influence the ski industry in a positive way. as far as i know not many other sports have a medium such as NS that has such an easily accesable place to talk to pros and people that are high up in the industry.

I guess this somewhat proves that Newschool Skiing is highly influenced by what the ´smaller people´have to say.

Props to skiing and NS

why doesn't msp organize a question answer thread like levinthal?

Ok, fine. Im glad the thing with TBC is incorrect. But many reliable sources said something different, so now I wont consider this issue when talking, thinking about msp. I'm very sorry msp, but even if msp did nothing of the sort to tbc, yall have still done enough to other film companies that makes me sick. I will continue to support the film companies who don't have shady business practices, and movies that I enjoy more. If only msp could renounce previous shady business practices, make better, more creative movies, and support smaller companies instead of trying to stop them before they take away msp's business. I might start to support them again then. msp, yall made really good films before-ski movie 3 is still one of my favorites. i would like to see another msp movie of that caliber or better.

Helly Hansen decided not to sponsor TBC because they wanted to make a Jon movie instead?

Glad that's (somewhat) cleared up.

MSP should be able to post if they want. As long as they are just answering a question and not selling their product, its fine. Its also really helpful to clear up all these rumors. So mods, stop deleting everything.

im stoked you guys did make an effort to post and actually check our site out!

keep it comming and any issues involving respect will go away. pay an intern a few free DVDs or something to take some time to come on here and address all this stuff!

thats really uncool about the deletion, but hey props to you for comming on. Thats how you guys show your dedication to our sport, and how the rest of the newschool community should be acting!

i'm glad that's been explained. Seems a little odd that MSP's posts would be immediately deleted without anyone noticing though. If they were in fact deleted, that's pretty weak.

Well that's good. I thought that they did actually make it so HH didn't sponser them. I should've known that it was a rumor.

GET IT KIDS?!?!?!

NEW SCHOOLERS DELETES POSTS THAT THEY THINK ARE BAD FOR YOU.

CENSORING CRAP HEADS.

YOU ALL OWN THIS PLACE.

TELL THEM TO LET IT RIDE OR YOU WILL.

the thing thats wierd about that is msp mentions it so much in their response, seems like they are trying to blame it on the mods when they never posted probably. covering their asses from being lame

Yep. I'm fat bastard. I'm also Scott Gaffney, one of MSP's directors (out-of-office ie. I don't deal with business at all, so go easy). Two weeks ago, I posted a number of things trying to simmer all of this hatred . Some were in responses to people at MSP being perceived as rich (SO far from the truth), some were about business practices, some were about how sponsorship money works, some were about creative things. Each successive post was deleted, so the hate could keep on fuming.

Let's just put it this way. We love skiing, and we love making movies, just like Berman, just like Jonny, just like everyone else. I don't want to get into business practices, only that people make different movies. I think MSP puts out quality movies, year in, year out. Perhaps we've gotten into a formula, and we recognize the need to keep changing things up. That's always been a personal drive of mine. Mix it up.

I still think our cinematography is first-rate. Rip on the sunset booter shots from the heli all you want, but they're still the cleanest, most picturesque images isolating skier style/grabs, etc, and every snowboard company out there wanted to get in on those shoots, because they realized they were the sickest shots in years. Do we stop doing them because we've already done them? Maybe we shouldn't shoot from the ground anymore either. Maybe just from chairs and moving cars and snowmobiles. Maybe Berman shouldn't do a rail shot with a chain link fence in the foreground ever again. God, we did that years ago. Wait until Absinthe tries to put another cable cam shot by a line next year, again? Are you going to be tired of it already?

Enough of that. Anyway, we all make different movies for different people. Just because you might like Britney Spears doesn't mean that I do. People have different tastes. I like Berman's movies. I think War was the best movie out last year. They're are all good for different reasons. As long as they are creating stoke, movies are doing their job. That's all we're really after at MSP. If you dig our flicks, great. If not, I only encourage you to check out Push. You don't have to buy it, just give it a chance. Set aside all that hatred, and you just may enjoy it. And you'll be supporting a bunch of really passionate, talented skiers who put their lives on the line just about every day they go out. They'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

mods, delete this crap. haha just kidding. I agree with just about everything you said, except for your backup for the heli shots. I agree they are great, but they honestly make up 1/3 of all your park segments. It gets redundant. Level 1 doesnt use shots from behind chain link fences in super slow mo over and over and over to the point where you feel you have seen the same shot before. But it would be great if someone like say...steve winter, who does deal with the business aspect of things, would come on and clear things up.

I thouroughly enjoy cable cam shots. I am getting a bit sick of the heli cam shots. They are great for teasers but in an actual video slow mo all the time... not that great. Watch Elektrap and tell me you do not love those cable cam shots. Saying every snowboard company out there wants a piece of your shots is an overstatement. Name them all. You can't. Also saying you were doing the chain link shot years ago like you invented it? Comments like that make me never want to buy one of your movies. I will always support Berman because he doesn't get cocky about his movies.

I really love this response...and I really love how teh small people can be heard in a community of thousands of people big and small, good at skiing and bad....It is really good to hear that the little we say can mean a lot in the long run...

Props NS for doing whats right...I think if we feel its wrong we should say that...we are the people that are these companies buyers...they should do what we want...we are there life...we basically run these ski companies by putting all the money we get from bagging groceries into their product...they should do what we want...and our input should be positive...and i think it is. And they should take it completely seriously and if they dont, i think they will loose much buisness becuase they dont respond to their cliental

thank you for reading my rant...

and props one last time to NS

I'm not trying to claim those chain link shots. That's like trying to claim we were the first to shoot a skier in baggy clothes. Everyone has done it. Everyone has done nearly everything in ski and snowboard filmmaking. Like cable cams. Every ski company who can afford it has done those as well. I'm just saying everyone was super stoked when our booter heli shots first cam out, now they're played, probably because we HAVE overdone them. I agree. There's no cockiness here--perhaps five snowboard companies contacted us and wanted to get in on those shots, and we went with Standard Films because we already had a good relationship there.

I'm just saying, we're not unique. No one really is. If you see it, it's probably been done. We all just try to do it a little better, or tweak it a bit.

Regardless of everyones'/my opinions of MSPs business practices and general style, I'd like to give some props to Gaffney. This guy has generally killed it on the hill, filmed and edited some best footage around for years. Thanks for coming on newschoolers, I wouldn't mind seeing more of you here.

year after year after year, after using that as the money shot in 3 movies (including push) it does get really lame and over done

Thanks fatbastard, instead off everybody hating why not simply tell them what you would like to see in a ski movie to make it better for everybody.

Enough of the crying and rumors. MSP does make good movies(yes I said it, and i'm sure a lot more kids are thinking it too but are just too scared to come on because some kid is going to bite his head off) so lets help them in making an even better movie by telling them what we would like to see.

^yes, or a shot like TBC when mike Wilson is skiing some mellow pow with a follow cam but something a little more technical.

like that sick shot of rinfret in redtape? I think that was the first bc follow cam. maybee I'm wrong. We have a cool shot of jake, a bc follow cam in GSR.

uhhh, yeah...did you only read the first sentence of my post and miss the "just kidding" part, or something?
