portugal has nearly no drug laws. they even have state-destributed heroine to help combat their growing drug problems.

as for legalization in the us, the problem, as stated above, is big tobacco. weed is something anyone can easily grow in their backyard and this would effectively destroy the tobacco industry. they will never allow for legalization.

The only thing that I want to comment here is that people don't consider the full consequences of any legalization of marijuana in the United States... say, for example, that legalizing marijuana here would end up in the overthrow of about half a dozen south American countries by drug lords whose incomes suddenly triple? The American market would eventually take care of itself, but practically, until we started growing enough weed here to sustain ourselves, we'd just be putting more bullets into a gun in the hands of a South American crony.

 
^ actually it is more likely that those south american drug lords would be put out of business. legalization would mean lowered costs. importing it legally would be subject to tax, making profitablity low, while illegal importation would not be worth the effort given the lowered price.

as a side note, its not so much that marijuana is not a very harmful drug or that it 'should' be legal. the reason legalization is worthwhile is because the tax dollars spent fighting the so-called drug war could go to more important areas, such as education. furthermore, were the state to sell marijuana, whether directly or indirectly, the money raised could be used to combat more dangerous drugs like heroine.

Ok first, Mj isn't decriminalized in Vacouver, but nobody cares as long as you aren't driving high. In west van they have a couple of places with a sign on them that says ''Nature Bar'' and the windows covered in newspapers so you can't see in, and nobody bothers them. Also, they advertise hydroponics and stuff so blatantly on the radio it's actually funny...ie:

There are so many more arguments you can make against pot than for it. And even if you there are a lot of arguments for pot in the US the oppossing will always have something to argue that point with. The debate is really interesting and if anyone has a chance to see it dont pass it up!
