Basically, guy had been caught illegally selling cigarettes before, cops say they saw him do it again. They moved in, he got pissed saying he wasn't selling. Cop chokeholds him and takes him to the ground. He's an asthmatic, goes into cardiac arrest and dies... Your thoughts?

I think it was kind of fucked up to put him in a chokehd because there's better ways to deal with it, but it's not like the cop meant to kill him, it was just a stupid choice and an unfortunate outcome.

When a criminal resists police and doesn't do what they say when they catch him doing something that he knows is wrong, what else are they gonna do? Just let him go?

If he would've just gave in when he was caught red handed he would still be alive

Yea because selling untaxed cigs is a good enough reason to choke out a fat man with asthma.

Cops need to have more compassion and common sense. I understand they interact mostly with scummy people, but they have to have the ability to look past that and not stereotype every person they come across. They are supposed to be professional

I believe most police officers are. We just hear about the bad ones in the news and rarely ever the good ones.

However, I don't think a choke hold was a good option to use. I didn't watch the video but they definitely could have approached the situation differently. Although if they were in a situation where they had to taze him I think he still would have died since he had heart trouble.

You're kidding me, right? He resisted arrest. They had every right to do what they did. You can see he didn't even choke him, too. Putting your arm around someone's neck to take control =/= choking.

You're missing the point.. The cop didn't choke him out because of what he was doing wrong. The only reason he got choked out is because he resisted arrest.

My assumption is the police have had encounters with him in the past that have gone beyond selling illegal cigarettes. He's a big dude, but you you don't call in x number of extra cops for a guy you've never dealt with before or who's only been caught selling illegal cigs.

wow that's a weird situation for both of them. the guy selling the cigs is at fault for selling them in the first place. the cop is at fault for being to rough. in the end though I think it was definitely the cops fault. there are other ways to take care of the situation then getting the guy in a choke hold. that's just lack of self control and patience on the cops part.

If the perp resists and the cop feels like the are in danger they can use whatever mean they want imo.

well that was unexpected.

here's a novel thought, maybe if the guy didn't weigh 400 fucking pounds, his heart wouldn't have given out at the slightest bit of physical exertion.

"Every time you see me you want to mess with me. I'm tired of it. It stops today!" he yelled.

also, probably not the best thing to say to the cops....
