Mammoth sold for $365 million

Not exactly. The key here are the words "controlling interest."

Now that a major development/luxury hotel company has a controlling interest in the ski resort expect things to change, and quickly.

There will be more development, particularly high-end real estate. The mountain will become more crowded and there will be a much larger bed-base of ski in/ski out short-term rental properties.

That doesn't mean Mammoth will start to suck. But over the next ten years the charactor of the resort will become markedly different. Sadly, lift ticket prices as well as season pass prices will probably increase, too. And there will a cookie-cutter village al la Interwest, the developers/owners of places like Whistler and Copper Mountain.

If you don't like that kind of stuff, go to Mammoth this year, because next year will be the beginning of the end. . .

good points. on the news this morning, i heard that they want to "attract more starts like aspen or vail". i could never afford to live in either of those places.

that's pretty shocking. Are the owners selling it for the money, or because they're older? I mean they were crying obviously the article said. I hope Mammoth remains at the top, and not overrun.

that sucks...i loved that place so much when i went out there and was planning on moving there in 2 years..aghhh

you obviously dont live near mammoth...price per square foot for homes there is as HIGH as any ski resort in the nation

600++++ a square foot

shitty little 900-square foot aframes are going for 750K or more

It is stupid and out of control...this purchase wont change that at all

Mammoth was already going gucci a few years ago...this is NO surprise to anyone who lives there!

Real moral of the story -

\

Buy a home in Lee Vining or Bishop NOW!!

the entire mountain,,.,? is it just me or does this sound like amazingly cheap...as in wtf this cannot be possible....maybe it's because I didn't read the article

I think you'll see big changes with the park. The #1 reason why the park at Mammoth was sick is because Intrawest was controlling mountain operations and all of the intrawest resorts have sick parks. Now that Intrawest will be mostly out of the picture I doubt that the new company will be as interested in parks and will start to decrease park budgets and increase lodging budgets. It will take a year or 2, but Mammoth won't be the top dog for parks in the next few years.

you kids (except maybe cluassen) don't understand that a huge corparation already owned half the damn mtn. so all these" warning" are fucking useless mammoth is as expensive as fucking malibu, not gonna change, now its the mountain itself that is potentially fucked

thank you. shit is already expensive up the ass. whoever said that 900 foot a-frames go for $750K wasn't exagerating that much.

your a idiot too. Intrawest had 51% of shares, BUT NOT THE CONTROLLING SHARES. Intrawest is pretty much an all REAL ESTATE company. They may run Whistler and a few other resorts, but most of the rest of what they own they only run the real estate / Villages / Hotels. Mammoth has been running themselves for 50+ years. ONCE AGAIN INTRAWEST DOES NOT RUN MAMMOTH OR THE MAMMOTH PARK AND THEY NEVER HAVE

Haha your first post got worked! It doesn't matter anyway bro because the man behind that parks fame is not there anymore anyway he's at Alpine Meadows and Boreal pn the North shore of Tahoe. We love haveing Eric build our Alpine Park might I mention, he's the man.

your wrong douche fvk....Intrawest OWNED 59% of the shares before selling. WHICH IS CALLED A MAJORITY SHARE. For someone who's daddy works with budgets (ooooh) you sure don't have your facts straight. Also, the parks at Mammoth werent really that great UNTIL Intrawest started pumping money into the place.

Also, Intrawest owns and RUNS more than a few resorts. Whistler, Copper, Winter Park, Snowshoe, Mountain Creek, Stratton, Tremblant. etc etc. Just because they own real estate doesnt mean thats ALL they do. Again..YOU ARE WRONG CHUMP.

LOOOSER.

"In February 2005 the shareholders of Mammoth Mountain, including Dave McCoy, Mammoth's founder and controlling shareholder, Rusty Gregory and Intrawest agreed to engage Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin to explore strategic alternatives to enhance the value of the company's shares, including the possible sale of shares. Prior to the transaction, Intrawest owned a 59.5 per cent interest in Mammoth Mountain."

Hahaha... I even knew that. Don't act like you know this if you don't. All of that is pretty common knowlege if you ar ea local here.

Fuck all you guys. I dont care who the hell Clappie is or his gay fucking dad. There's 20 press releases out there saying that intrawest owns a majority share of 59.5%. I think that they are a little more reliable that some pre-pubescent idiot on the internet. Get a clue, the kid is wrong.
