Making falling less painful?

I see all these videos of people getting absolutely dummied on rails and just get up and keep skiing.. Am i just a little bitch? (rhetorical question of course i am) when i bang off a rail i can never manage to get back into it that day. Any advice on how to bail softer? or is it just about nutting up and taking my lumps.

I feel it's a bit of a mental game/being ballsy and a little bit of your body.

It definitely helps you withstand most falls better if you are somewhat strong and/or flexible. Not that that's a cure-all, but it certainly helps. I'm sure people that are better skiers than me could go into better detail.

For me the mental game is a big part of it, if I can laugh off a crash that definitely helps me get right back to it. If I feel shitty about not landing stuff that can definitely ruin my mindset and I'll have to go ride something else other than park to get my stoke level back.

Just don't crash fam..

But I fell you dude. Ive watched a few edits where Ive seen crashes that would end my day, and yet they get up and do it again. However, Ive taken some pretty hard falls on my mountain bike and still rode the rest of the day and surprised myself. You kind of have to get over it mentally, skiing is a big mental game. There is also an art to crashing. I cant really explain it because im still learning and because every situation is different, but theres definitely a better way to handle some "oh shit" moments.

As funny and untrue as this seems, it's seriously your best case.

Build up muscle mass/ work out a bit and you wont get as hurt or bruised when you inevitably crash.

your body gets used to falling, just like in lots of other sports. also it seems kind of shitty but after a while you sort of become 'experienced' to falling and you learn how to react when you're falling

Pretty hard to avoid unless you manage to prepare an escape, its falling so its not something you think about being ready for.

padded compression shorts/back protector/knee compression sleeves/helmet/padded mittens/powder/no poles/dont try to break your fall with your hands/roll with it

A good idea is to not try to stop yourself with your hands. Broke my wrist because I fell and tried to stop myself. Just let your body take it.

There are definitely better ways to fall but it all hurts regardless. Only so much you can do for the split seconds you get before hitting the ground.

if you know before you hit the ground that youve fucked up then sometimes you can help the landing. but if you fuck up the landing.... your fucked.

There is definitely techniques behind falling, I was going to write a babbling paragraph but then I figured: "hey, theres probably a good video out there". Sure enough there's a bunch.

Check it out.

pick up skating or blading, cause falling on concrete hurts a fuckton more than on snow. teaches you how to roll and fall properly after like 3 semi-bad falls. also you take it to snow and you barely even feel crashes unless you knee yourself in the face or something dumb

Yeah I have to agree with this, after picking up skating and sucking ass. Landing primo on everything and getting smashed on concrete. It really changes your perception on the whole falling on snow thing...

Start snowshoeing instead. Seriously though, taking up skateboarding might not be a bad idea. I would imagine after falling repeatedly on concrete, falling on snow would seem almost pleasurable.

When I fall I usually try to duck my head and almost always try to land on my side using my shoulder/arm to take off most of the blunt force but obviously this cant happen 100% time but its usually when I land on my tail bone or any part of the rib cage that I get the most hurt.

The first year or two that I started skiing I always fell on rails and got lots of bruises on my thighs, hips, and butt. So the next year I decided to buy football padded compression shorts that have pads down the sides of the thighs, and even a tailbone pad. It helps a lot and gave me more confidence as well.

Yup, hitting the gym will help prevent injury and it does actually help you shoulder falls if you have a little bit of upper mass.

I used to injure my shoulders every year until finally i started hitting the gym. Now when i fall i just lower my shoulder and take the hit. Most of the time i walk away unscathed.

Falling is an art form; the more you do it the better you get at it. Although you cant control the fact that you aren't going to land directly on your feet when you fall you definitely can control what position you will land in, what part of your body you will land on, and how you will maneuver your body after the initial impact. Typically you want to take as much of the impact with your legs as you possibly can (If you can at all) then tuck your shoulders, land on your back / shoulder area while lifting your head up and away from the ground, and role it out as much as you can. The aim of the game is to increase the time it takes for your body to come to a complete stop consequently reducing the average force needed to make your body come to that stop, and in the process taking the impact with the parts of your body that can take it the best. Although using your arms to help stop you might seem like a good idea, I would say avoid using your arms unless you absolutely need to keep from whacking your face on a rail or something; your arms aren't really made for taking impacts and can easily be sprained / broken.

Key Points-

-Take as much of the impact with your legs (If possible)

-Land on Back/ Shoulder area

-Tuck n Roll (If falling forward or to the side do a misty roll, if falling backwards do a rodeo roll)

-Keep your head up and away from the ground (Protect your noggin)

-Avoid using arms

Of course this doesn't work in every situation especially for when your falling directly on top of a rail, but this is the most general technique that can be used for most falls.

the trick is to not fall onto the rail. that being said I personally have been skiing with hip/butt pads now for like 6 years and would never go back. Also grabbed a pair of the black diamond knee pads, and they have saved my knees a couple of times from odd impacts.

It's definitely a combination of how amped you are to learn, meaning how much shit you're willing to cop before bailing and the actual art of bailing. Also, when you have a few friends to laugh at you when you fall it tends to soften the bruise a little bit. You can also beat them up and steal their lunch money if you need to take your anger out on someone.

yeah only pussy ass bitches break their backs. real men have spines made of steel...

fucking idiot

op im considering buying a pair of impact shorts for the days where i know im going to be trying new tricks on big features. I had a couple of falls last season learning cork 7s and although they weren't the most painful i ended up with dead legs/arse cheeks and even if i had wanted to carry on hitting jumps my legs didnt seem to want to play ball. i think impact shorts would help in that regard.

true, but most of the time the snow on the east coast is as hard as concrete except for in the spring.

stretch on the lift and wear hip pads. I don't wear any hip pads but by the end of the day I regret not using them. stretching really does help though
