Maker kingpins for jumps?

I'm getting into touring so I've been considering the kingpins for the binding. most of the time ill be in the backcountry but once in a while I may go to a resort with a couple of buddies and stay there for the day. So the question is how safe are they for bigger jumps?

yes you can ski pretty hard on Kingpins (https://vimeo.com/191755442http://quiksilver.com/snow/events/oneofyourdays/ )

However, I'd say it depends on what kind of touring you're doing and realistically how much you'll be in the resort vs. BC. A frame binding might make better sense if you're planning on mostly doing shorter tours and spending a fair amount of time in the resort.

Luke's right.

Also, it's good to remember that safety is different from how well they ski.

The kingpins are more a crap-shoot release dependability wise than say a true alpine binder, or a frame binding, or even like a Vipec with lateral toe release.

If you're not messing up you can hit jumps on anything. I've hit the big park line at Targhee on Speed Turns, but that's way different than hucking my meet to a questionable tranny, even if the landing is better in the backcountry.

So if you're only doing short tours with a lot of hucking a frame binder makes a ton of sense, but I do trust my kingpins a lot.

thank you both for your input. the only reason why I want to go with tech bindings is because I'm going to be doing a ton of tours next year hopefully.

do it.

I've rocked a bit of air into deep pow and even slayed some inbounds moguls on my kingers. the stoke is high

heard of sammy carlson? watched his movie from last year? hes on kingpins in all of it.

How many pairs did he break in the process?

guy proably has a new pair of skis every month. probably doesnt make it to the breaking point.

Wanted to jump in here and let you guys know that we've moved on from the SI&I System in favor of creating a touring binding integrated into the Look Pivot. We will be releasing the binding this spring and starting a pre-order sale for the fall.

Although we don't have final weights for a production model, touring mode is coming out pretty close to the Kingpin. Alpine mode is essentially the same as the Look Pivot, meaning it's good for jumps, safe, and skis better than any other binding.

We'll release a 8-18 DIN and later a 4-14 DIN. We're not necessarily trying to create the burliest touring binding we can, we're making one that's safe, tours well, and can ski wherever you want. I personally love being able to ski every day on one setup. Sled skiing, big tours and in the resort /park. Boots are coming along also which is awesome.

We're finishing up some ease of use details were excited about, namely, a step-down auto-locking brake retainer, two climbing bail heights easy to use with a ski pole, and auto-locking interchange mechanisms between toe pieces. We'll also do both ISO 5355 and WTR AFDs.

We're doing what we can to keep costs down and are shooting for $650 retail. We'll be releasing a full press release soon with more details and pics! Stay tuned and let me know if you've got questions.

cheers,

si

Looks pretty dang sweet.

I know it's not even at full production yet, but are you guys planning to go beyond the pivot chassis to perhaps an MNC binding like the Jester/Griffon I.D. or Warden? Would be sweet to be able to use with the increasing number of burly touring boots with ISO 9523 soles.

No, but we will be offering a WTR AFD which is based on the shape of the ISO 9523. It is essentially the same as MNC but is Look/Langes and Solly/Atomic version instead of Marker/Dalbello/Tecnica. Seems most solid AT boots are going this direction but they aren't using the same certification branding.

Here's a helpful link from evo that clarifies some of what's going on. We can look into what it would take to get the MNC cert. Probably a sliding AFD which adds one more moving part.

Stoked on these! Been thinking of busting out a pre-order here soon. I hear great things but I've never seen one of your bindings up close, so I have a quick question. Can you offer any insight on changing from tech to alpine? In this video it looks like it just slides off with pressure, is there an actual release mechanism? If not, is there any chance of the toepeice coming dislodged while you're clipped in?

A lot of the shots he was using jesters(?). If you look closely, you can see a lot of the shots he skiing wayharder and sending bigger cliffs on the jesters than on the kingpins but needless to say, he was sending stuff in pow with kingpins that most people on NS wouldn't try with any binding.

The lawsuit has not reached an outcome yet. That's likely only temporary as marker will probably have to pay G3 royalties on the brake system.

The lawsuit has not reach an outcome so my statement stands. Marker has been ordered to stop selling Kingpins in the US market. I'm not going to speculate as to what the outcome will be, just stating facts.

Ok, I misinterpreted what you said.

Marker will likely settle with G3 before November. They aren't gonna sit out a season not selling arguably the best freeride touring binding on the market.

If you’re into touring the only three options you need to look at (IMO) are kingpins, cast and daymakers. It just depends on you and how you ski and what you’re doing on em. If you ask me daymakers are the fucking shit. Bees knees

So hyped for my cast bindings to come in, I gotta wait till December but it's worth it.

From what I can tell online, the cast system looks like it's incompatible with ISO 9523? I have a pair of MTN Labs that I am loving, I wanna try Cast, but I don't think the look toe piece is compatible.

I tried to fit these in an old griffin toe, and it did not appear to be safe.

this year's (2017/2018) Cast Freetour is only compatible with 18 Din Look Pivots. If you have some of those lying around or can track down a used pair your in good shape, I personally chose to get some new Pivots as an investment in the most bomber touring setup of all time and am incredibly stoked for them.

kingpin pretty much has a squire heel piece, i personally prefer the g3 ion but they are very comparable in alot of aspects
