Magnetic Edges!!

i was just lookin through the "are spks any good on rails" thread and it got me thinking. would magnetic edges make rails easier? if you could find some way to make em so you dont hella stick it would pretty sick cause youd have better balance i guess? i dont know im probly gonna get flamed for this but w/e just thought id share

good idea man. i have never even thought about that. it prolly would be hard to do swups and it might slow u down??? good idea tho u should try it

If you would please read the thread before posting it might save yourself from looking like a total ass. He was wondering if the magnets could reppell you and in response to that, no they will not. You need a magnetic field oppostie of the magnets side you're using. Unless you put magnets in the rail (I'm not even sure if it would still work) then the magnets in your skis will be attracted to the metal no matter what direction they are facing.

Rails should be magnetized and the rental should be oppositely polarized. Keep the gapers away from the rails by magnetic field

Lol then embed electromagnets spordically on the freen trails so that they stick and double eject forward when they run over them

opposite polarities attract dude. Also, magnets are not brittle by nature, think about the flexible refrigerator magnet adveritisements.

Ye i was thinking more like that, like the maglev trains they have that just float over the rails, now that wuld be fun, kinda hard and way more work cause you'd have to synch both magnets so that you dont go flying off

make rental skis one polarity, bxes and rails another so they would die when they tried them, but we (freestylers) wouldn't stick cause we're cool like that

and you know when you push 2 magnets together with the same polarity, how it's hard to get them to touch, and they just go to the side? If you went off the kicker, when you got close to the rail, instead of floating, you'd go sliding off to the side instantly into a yardsale

well lib technologies did something close to that called magne-traction

check it out on their site

but if you really think about it, most of the times the magnets would probably just make things worse, especially when you clip a rail when you pop on too early and shit

magne-traction doesn't have shit to do with magnets. It's the wavy edge underfoot for more grip on the snow

Yeah I know there's no magnets in it, but doesnt it have something to do with like magnetic friction/pulses/enegry or some sort of technology if that makes any sense?

Don't beat yourself up over it haha.

Not to mention that the edges and rails/boxes would have to be ferromagnetic material (Fe,Co,Ni etc..) and I don't think they would be nearly as durable. But since we disproved the idea anyway, I guess material is besides the fact.

if you put magnets by your toe and by your heel but not right under your foot it would probly work... if the magnet was powerful enough

Wouldnt it be harder to balance with magnets under your feet than just normal rail riding?

wow thats crazy. i was considering making a thread about this but then thought i'd get owned.

i think we could eventually figure out a way to make it work.

if you could make it so that both the rail and the ski edge were positivly charged... you wouldnt stick, you would float over the rail.

woooooo!

there isn't enough surface area between the edges and the rails for them to even have sufficent attraction. It wouldn't work

yea and we could also coat the rails in honey to make them stickier!! good call!!!!!!

seriously though, I dont think it would work at all cuz the smoother you slide on a rail the better generally.

well actually it's science experiment time, you could charge your edges using a a magnet and then slide a rail and see if it makes any difference at all

First of all, lemme just say this is a hilarious thread with ppl arguing about magnets. We all sound like huge geeks. Think about the funniness of the situation for a second: were a bunch of freeskiers who are arguing over magnetic polarities.

Ok time for my geekiness:

You would have to have electro magnets in the rails and magnets in your skis. the electro magnets would switch polarity via electricy so that the section of electromagnets infront of you would attract your skis and the ones in back would repel, making you potentially supersonic. this is how maglev trains work.

magnets are weak and brittle they would fall apart just by sking on them not even gunna talk about against metal with (insert average skiers wieght here) of force on it and why? just why would you want to stick yourself (or repel) from the rail? wouldnt that defeat the porpose

excuse my spelling

just duct tape some magnets to the bottom of your skis then try it.

Or you could just duct tape the magents to the top of your skis cuz itll be magnetic through your bases anyway.

PS Wouldnt magnets ruin your graphite bases? If theyre graphite, wouldnt the atoms like all align and like break?

orrrrrr you could make an entire slope of negative magnets and skis out of positive magnets and hover down the slope.

go to hell global warming!!!!
