Ok, so it seems like people are starting to freak out about the new Raw Video feature in Magic lantern for many canon cameras. Can someone please explain to me what exactly Raw Video means and what advantages it provides? I'm debating installing the new firmware but I'd like to know what it means before I start using it on my T3i. Thanks.

i don't know if ill mess with it a whole lot on my 60D to be honest.

but RAW video is fuckin awesome. like true RAW RED video is the shit. I did a project where we shot 4k raw video on the RED epic and its so nice because you can change things like white balance and some exposure levels all in post as well as a bunch of other stuff. it's just like working with a raw pictures in PS or Lightroom where you have crazy amounts of information captured in one frame so that you can really push the image around in post. so sweet but files get real big and you can eat up a bunch of space real fast. im hoping to try out the black magic camera's RAW in a couple months to see if that workflow is similar to the RED's workflow which im assuming is probably pretty close

it might be cool to mess with a little on a DSLR but i can't really see it being that practical on a camera like that. might give it a go tho just for shits and gigs
 
Oh ok I see, thanks a ton. Can you edit raw footage (color grading, etc...) in programs like Premier or do you have to go through a program like Davinci Resolve first?
 
You can edit raw footage in premiere. you can send it to resolve after im pretty sure for color grading and what not but i haven't used Davinci that much yet to really get a solid workflow for color grading out of premeire
 
When I tried it out the only way to adjust exposure/colour correct the raw files themselves was in lightroom IIRC, as images. But I believe they've fixed it so you can do it elsewhere now
 
I've been fooling around with it a bunch today and the best way to color grade that I've found is to use Adobe Camera Raw in After Effects. Footage looks awesome by the way. Anyone know if its possible to play the videos back on camera? I can't right now and I also can't see the live view monitor when it is recording.
 
open up ML, then go to raw video and you can watch your last recorded, I can't remember what it shows it like, might be the grayscale one, but you can definitely see it a bit.
 
The last I heard you could only use ML raw on the 5D Miii. Anyone know if this has changed to include other cameras now?

The biggest thing you get with Raw is DYNAMIC range meaning your highlights hold detail alongside your shadows. It gives it a much more traditional cinema look. From what I have read from people who know their shit, the full frame design of the 5D with the ML Raw now makes the camera a huge competitor again, holding up to Black Magic and RED in alot of places it never could before.

 
they had the 50d doing at least 1080p24, have a feeling it was 1080p30 though, not sure if they released that though. I've used it on the 600d but you only get like ~1280x~500 at 24p, if that.

 
Lots of cameras can be used. It depends on the cards you're using. As far as full HD for a sustained period of time I think it's gotta be a camera with CF cards. Even the 6D has it running I think at somewhat limited resolutions. But there is no "official" release.

I find the major advantage to this release being time-lapses where you don't have to use your shutter.

It still struggles to hold up to RED and BM in some regards. Rolling shutter/moire issues still exist in the raw recordings i've seen. Not all, but most. As well as resolution.

I have it running on my 6D. The SD card can't handle the write speeds, so the resolution is very limited. It's not worth the hassle, IMO. Good point on the shutter-life friendly time lapses.
 
Yeah honestly to me, while its amazing, a huge downside is having to have it loaded on each card you use. Not that its a big deal, but on a shoot with lots of data going and limited time it could be annoying?

Hopefully this makes canon open to just giving us the option to have raw in the standard firmware.
