def happy to be reunited with my ridiculous rig, just so I can shoot again. Life happens and all that , and sometimes you fall off. But, I forgot how therapeutic it can be, as well as highly profitable...

But anyways, I have fucked around with Magic Lantern before when I was back living in the east coast and I had only gotten my redrockmicro studio-5Dmk3-zeiss ALL manual everything cinematic beauty. Now the 5dmk3 has been out for a little while.... and damn, I'm surprised how shockingly cheap as fuck the body is compared to when I bought it even just 2 years ago barely (?)

Now, don't get me wrong, its one of the most amazing feats in technology regarding capturing video that with careful skill and experience, and spent the investment on actual nice glass instead of being dumb and getting the shitty zoooooomer canon lens that will come with those kits - if you don't buy the body alone (which u should probably always do..)

Right almost forget why i made this post. Gotta go to work and I haven't posted on this site in sooo long, oh my godd. trying not to rant aimlessly. thats my word.

ANYWAYS to my question/point:

Just curious to see WHO shoots RAW 4K w/ the same setup, or another full frame 35mm DSLR body rig?? If anyone??

I'm just really excited to switch to shooting entirely in RAW 4K now that I have all my shit together again, out here in CO. Always love checking out samples, since you still don't see much released from anyone - from this.

Understandable considering that if I could predict the future, I would of just waited and spent the difference to get a RED, 2 primes, the most basic.. Sadly, would not of been really THAT much cheaper , respectively.

I've done some tests before, just when the rumors first came out about M.L having that kind of magical-insane level of ability to override the Mk3's original firmware with everyones favorite Lantern.... but it was still beta, and it was just fucked up and super frustrating and not worth it at the time...

WHY have I never gotten around to shooting and working in 4K RAW ( which looks fucking mind-blowing incredible, absolutely comparable to RED shoots, and other 4K pro video camcorders from the few people who knew what they were doing when I got to check out test footy) IS because of storage.

And I know plenty of people will bitch and say its not worth it, just shoot 1080p , that it still looks incredible or can... and clients if you do any work, or w/e even just for yourself - everyone will still eat it up. Especially after proper manual color correction. eh its true.

But fuck that, if my camera rig can shoot at arguably essentially the same overall resolution and aesthetic quality , and in some rare cases actually better... than a pro studio 4K cam that is $20,000+ , I don't see why you would not....

I was gona say above the ONLY thing that I could see stopping most people from going 5Dmk3 practically dedicated 4K RAW is the fact that I'm guessing if you are like me, you are still going to be shooting on Compact Flash cards. Since that is the most feasible option...

However, 4K RAW on the 5DMk3 , shot at 23.967 frames a second (or 24fps exactly.. if u choose to use Lantern's override option thingy..) roughly comes out to taking up about 10GB PER SECOND..... with up to 12-14 per SECOND which I am confused about , but I will see shortly exactly how godamn fast it is indeed going to tear up my CF cards....

I am sure there is a dedicated SSD type of mountable drive setup u can rig to a full studio size rig like mine, so that I can not deal with this kind of disgustingly expensive price tag , just to be able to shoot still not enough to film even half way through your school play..

But for now, I had to take the hit, cashed some things in, and the only option was (TWO) 512GB Lexar professional 1066x UDMA 7 compact flash cards... which came out to $1800.00 ...

I know, fucking absurd.

To conclude, I'll post some test footage, not just a dumb 5 second shaky, skipping frames clip... but something that has a few shots at least.. either way, it's time now that 4K computer monitors and definitely 4K TVs are about to start replacing all the "old 1080p" LEDs faster than u think.

But yes, I really am curious to hear anyone else who knows (most likely) way more about RAW 4K video from their own hands on experience.

And as always, Magic Lantern is like having 2 Christmases in a row

no, think about it... the 5dmk3 has the capability to shoot still photos at RAW at higher resolutions than the standard for 4K... Magic lantern, among other things is basically overriding the camera to shoot RAW photos at 4K resolution, at 23.967fps of these

And fair enough... technically, it's true that video editing software cannot process RAW files as a means to create motion video...

But the process is simple enough and quick enough, especially when you have a super high end dedication post production mac pro.

The RAW files that make up the 4K RAW files which make up of course, the video.. are then converted in an automated manner with a simple Adobe tool to .DNG files, which are very close to being RAW format, but just a way to work with this as video...

But worthwhile challenge..

I did not say as ideal, convenient as it is to just shoot 4K with an actual camera that is built to just that... and yeah, no shit, the C400 , REDs, etc... are going to offer a significant number of high end , ill AF features that i obviously wish i had... such as shooting 60p, 120p flawlessly , all while still shooting 4K etc.

But u should just probably stop talkin about shit u odnt know about hah , usually the keen idea

I did a big project using raw video on the 5d3 last year and have done some programming for ML modules and written scripts to deal with converting the raw footage. I'll put a link to my film at the bottom of this post.

That being said, everyone else is right. Magic lantern cannot do 4k raw. At best, it can do 1080p (maybe a little higher now) and you can upscale it to 2k or 4k in post (which still gets good results). You can also do higher frame rates than 24fps with smaller resolutions. The camera may be able to take stills with resolutions higher than 4k, but the camera cannot write to a cf card fast enough to do that 24 times a second. It's a hardware limitation that's built into the camera. The fastest CF cards have the seemingly arbitrary write speed of 1066x because that is as fast as cameras can write- so it doesn't make sense to make faster cards. Also, if you look at the read/write speeds of those CF cards, you could at most hope for something in the neighborhood of 150 Mb/s, so anything being written at 12 gb/sec is impossible. Those 512 gb cards will help you be able to shoot for longer periods without having to dump your footage, but won't bypass the hardware limits of write speed.
